The 2013 IKEA Catalogue app featured an augmented reality viewer that visualized furniture in 3-D and

served related video and digital content to readers and was the most downloaded branded app of 2012,

even after launching in July. With that kind of success as a benchmark, expect other companies to start

managing entire product lifecycles with augmented reality solutions- not unlike Mitsubishi Electric with their

enterprise MeViewAR app that visualizes heating and cooling units in the real world. Mitsubishi Electric has

already moved to the next phase for 2013, intending to visualize 3-D maintenance instructions for service

    technicians. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz4ykMn3UR4)

In this age of algorithmic aggregation, we also salute titles that have a decidedly human touch.

    RFID

(ref: http://www.rfidjournal.com/articles/view?866)"..use DRSC to enhance the safety and the productivity

of the nation's transportation system... such as issuing alerts to drivers about impending intersection

collisions, rollovers, weather-related road hazards, or warning a driver that his vehicle is going too fast to

safely negotiate an upcoming curve... downloading driving maps...automatic toll collection systems like EZ-Pass.."

"Historically, the termsRFIDand DSRC have been used synonymously to describe a technology based on tags

and readers. But with the advent of the 5.9 GHz band, more attention is being given to differentiating these

terms. Although the 5.9 GHz DSRC system will essentially consist of tags and readers, it will be different fromtraditionalRFIDin many ways. The DSRC system will be more like a peer-to-peer system in which either end

of a link can initiate a transaction; traditionalRFIDsystems operate in a master-slave arrangement. This

peer-to-peer architecture will be necessary because many planned applications are vehicle-to-vehicle ones,

not involving the roadsideRFIDreaders at all."

    (ref: http://www.rfidjournal.com/articles/view?9060)

"One key trend:RFIDentered the beginning of Phase 2 adoption. Phase 1, in my mind, has always been

utilizing the technology in the most basic wayto identify objects and determine their locations. Phase 2

involves usingRFIDto know what an item is and where it is located, and to monitor its condition. Phase 3

will be to employRFIDto control objects or the environment automatically, such as having robots perform

tasks based on input from anRFIDsystem...Many companies have not yet begun to useRFIDto identifyproducts, assets, work-in-process and so forth...With RFID, Malaysian Logistics Company Gets Fewer Blowouts

Lee Ting San Group has begun attaching rubber-encasedEPCGen 2tags to tires on some of its trucks, to

help it track inspection and maintenance...After reading thetag, the inspector uses the tire probe to

measure the tire's tread and pressure, and that information is transmitted to the handheldreadervia a

Bluetooth connection. The operator can then view the results of each measurement on the handheld's

screen as the data is received... Prior to the system's installation, he explains, about one tire blew out every

two months...With the introduction of this system," Ahilan states, "we have not seen any tire-burst problem

occur." Ultimately, he adds, the solution has improved the road safety of the LTS fleet, and has enabled the

company to provide safer, more reliable service to its end customers. What's more, the firm finds that tireslast longer, since they are inflated to the correct pressure on a regular basis."
