APhA2013 was so much FUN!
April/May 2013
If I had to tell people about one thing about the annual APhA
-ASP conference, I would say that it was refreshing. The
conference helped me to learn more about my profession
and what I can do to advocate for it. It also allowed me a
chance to network with students around the nation,
providing us the opportunity to share ideas and help each
other to improve our futures as pharmacists.
- Andrew Stessman (Drake University)
"It was my first time attending a national meeting.
It was very intriguing to meet student pharmacists
from all over the country and learn how they are
getting involved in the profession."
– Quang Phan (Drake University)
All the Buzz
Look for the quotations from your fellow Region 5 APhA-ASP members who
attended APhA2013 throughout the
Newsletter.
Thank you to all who sent in a quote. Special thank you to Drake who provided
the MOST quotes of all the Region 5 Schools!
I thought APhA 2013 was an awesome
experience! I loved talking to students from
different schools from around the country and
loved the policy discussion!
- Allyson Conn (Drake University)
It was great seeing a broader perspective of what APhA
-ASP does beyond the local levels. The best part was
having a chance to meet a ton of students from across
the country. Escaping the Iowa winter for a few days
wasn't bad either.
– Don Bladt (Drake University)
What are people saying about APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition
APhA was just as awesome as the airing of DJ Steve Porter’s Randy Moss Video…..
“Everybody One Clap”…. It was definitely a fun ride!
-Julie Corradi (University of Minnesota)
I think the great th
ing about APhA2013 is that it
always
keeps everyone in the loop about what is
truly facing the
profession of pharmacy and making sure that as students,
we are at the heart o
f all the issues and potential
solutions. Also, being able to meet and discuss regional
issues with both others inside the region, as well as those
who are from different parts of th
e country, is a great
experience and one of the reasons why I th
ink APhA
annual is always a great place to go.

APhA Annual Meeting Exposition in Los Angeles, CA was another successful meeting that brought student pharma-cists, pharmacists, and other key phar-maceutical players together.
There are several quotations located throughout the newsletter from your fellow student pharmacists.
Student pharmacists walked the red carpet to enter the Friday Night Social with an LA theme! There were also pictures taken wearing all the glitz and glam seen in Hollywood.
You National Executive Officers and Regional Officers danced everything from “Gagnon Style” to the “Harlem Shake.” Student pharmacists learned about the ‘Struggle Bus’ and will never view Ketchup the same after hearing from our keynote speaker Judson Laipply. Judson not only taught us that
life isn’t always easy and you must keep moving, but he also performed his most recent version of ‘Evolution of Dance.’
Policies were passed by APhA-ASP and students had a lively discussion
regarding a new business item.
All in all, the energy, excitement and inspiration student pharmacist came away with after this meeting will keep our profession and APhA moving for-ward.
I look forward to seeing you all in
Orlando for APhA2014 next year!

As always, the policy discussion at
annual meeting was lively and
interesting.
The following policies were adopted at
APhA2013, pending APhA Board of
Trustees Approval.
2013.1 Expanding Immunization
Privileges for Pharmacists and Stu-
dent Pharmacists. (ADOPTED)
1. APhA-ASP encourages all health
care professionals who administer
immunizations, to have real-time and
bi-directional access to the Immuniza-
tion Information System (IIS) (formerly
the vaccine/immunization registry)
and patient electronic health records
EHRs). Furthermore, immunization
providers should regularly and rou-
tinely update the IIS and EHRs to
meet both community public health
and patient-specific needs.
2. APhA-ASP encourages pharmacy
stakeholders to promote legislative
efforts that would enable
pharmacists and student pharma-
cists to administer all CDC-
recommended immunizations per pro-
tocol and
address community-specific needs
regarding patient age restrictions.
2013.2 – Development of an Effec-
tive and Financially Viable Care
Transitions Model (ADOPTED)
1. APhA-ASP encourages pharma-
cists, student pharmacists, and other
health care professionals to develop a
team-based care transitions model
that enhances the coordination of
care, strengthens the relationship
among all health care providers, re-
duces hospital readmission rates, and
improves patient outcomes.
2. APhA-ASP encourages pharma-
cists, student pharmacists, and care
transitions stake-
holders to work with health-systems,
employers, and third party payors to
develop and implement a sustainable
and financially viable payment model
for all members of the care transitions
team.
The Policy Standing Committee has
also been charged with review the
following: (Approved)

Policy Making: What policies did APhA-ASP Pass this year?
What are people saying about APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition
New Policies were passed and the policy standing committee was charged with reviewing important topics like compounding, provider status

My first APhA annual meeting was an amazing experience.
Being involved in implementing this year’s policies and seeing
the change that they have made in the past shows how much
APhA-ASP truly makes an impact on pharmacy. The
networking done at APhA2013 was also very valuable—both
with students and pharmacists. I’m looking forward to
APhA2014 in Orlando!

Running for President Elect
By: Tony Olson
APhA-ASP’s definition of a leader is any “student pharmacist committed to mak-ing a difference in the profession.” Amongst the many opportunities availa-ble to student pharmacists to make a difference through APhA-ASP is serving as an elected national officer.
After much reflection and deliberation with members of my chapter, I decided to run for the President-elect position at the APhA Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. Making the decision to run was nerve-racking, but I’m glad I took the leap. Even though I didn’t attain the
outcome I wanted, the process was transformative.
Running for national office provides a rare opportunity to share a message with thousands of your peers through a 4-minute speech and open candidate review. It also is an awesome way to meet other passionate student pharma-cists from all over the country, many of who I remain in contact with to this day.
None of this would have been possible without my fellow chapter members, who helped design campaign materials, provide feedback for my speech, and more. I can’t adequately express the enormity of my gratitude for their sup-
port and encouragement throughout the process.
Running for APhA-ASP national office was an experience that I’ll never forget and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year in Orlando. If you have a message you’d like to share and a desire to make a differ-ence, I’d highly encourage you to consider running as well!

What you should know before running for a National position in APhA-ASP
By: Ellie Huntington
1.Expect the unexpected This may seem cliché, but it is very true. Everything I had been planning since November did not go exactly as I thought it would. This requires the candidate to be on their toes and to think quickly. If everything is not going according to plan, take it as is and embrace the changes. By doing this you will ensure that you don’t become stressed out about the whole process.
2. Ask for help I had a member from my chapter and previous NEC members suggest that it is important to not be afraid to ask for help. Leading up to Annual I had many people help me edit my application and speech. Often a second or maybe even fifth opinion can be very valuable. You should be willing to assign tasks to your chapter members. At Annual my chapter pres-ident offered to make sure I always
had a full water bottle. This may seem silly, but during your campaign you get busy and having water becomes vital.
3. Practice and then practice again Although your speech may change once you get to Annual it is important to practice your speech and delivery style. Once you get up in front of all the students it is easy to trip up, so making sure the basics become habits is essential. Your practice should in-clude some plans you have for the future of the Academy. What helped me was to meet with many individuals to become familiar with both the policies and hot topics for pharmacy.
4. Be aware of the possible outcomes As a candidate there is always the possibility that you either win or lose. So be prepared for both. As my mom told me, “practice your winning and losing face.” And moms always know best. Even if the results are not what you were hoping for understand that you took a giant leap and have ac-complished a lot. Many people would never even think of doing this so be proud.
5. Enjoy every moment Everyone told me to enjoy every moment during Annual because it goes too fast. I know personally this was something I consciously had to make sure I was doing. But seriously take a moment to breathe and enjoy all that is to come during the entire process.
I want to thank everyone that either
encouraged me to run for a position or
helped me out with my campaign for
National President-elect of APhA-
ASP. I appreciate your support and
look forward to working with you in the
near future. Who knows maybe you
will see me in Orlando next year doing
this whole process all over again!

Summer Leadership Institute: Learning to Lead
In July of each year, student pharma-cists and chapter advisors gather in DC to learn leadership skills. There are approximately 180 attendees that partic-ipate in SLI. SLI invites one chapter officer from each APhA-ASP Chapters and satellite campuses to join the meet-ing each year.
In past years, SLI has offered the chance to do capitol visits and meet with Congress members and c Congressional staff to advocate for the profession. In 2011 a scavenger hunt
with a new twist occurred.
There are many things that chapter leaders can take from SLI each year. Some of the main themes include: en-thusiasm, professionalism, creativity, teamwork, patriotism, and attention to detail. If you have ideas or wish for your chap-ter leader to learn something in particu-lar from SLI, talk to them! When you return to school in the fall, ask them about their experience at SLI!

One of the best experiences I had at APhA2013 was representing the Acade-my of Student Pharmacists in the Big House.
It was a unique experience to be able to see how the policy making process happens when all academies and pharmacists throughout the nation come together.
One of the policies the students passed
last year (concerning drug disposal) was brought forth in the Big House this year. It was wonderful to see our policies making a difference in pharmaceutical practice.
Keep those great ideas flowing and be ready to bring up some amazing policy proposals at our MRM this year in November.
I encourage all student pharmacists to
spend some time understanding our policy process and to take an active role in advocating for our profession.
Please contact Sara Farell with any questions related to policy or the policy making process.

It was my first time at APhA-ASP Annual Meeting
and I absolutely loved it. I got to meet other
chapters, but also got to know the members of
my chapter even better. APhA-ASP Annual
Meeting has made me very excited about
advocating for the profession and I am excited to
teach residents of our community about the
benefits of a pharmacist.

The University of Iowa chapter of APhA-ASP hosted elections for executive board officers and ap-pointed patient care project coordi-nators during the month of Febru-ary. On February 28th, several mem-bers of our chapter traveled to Des Moines to participate in “Legislative Day” and advocate for
the profession of pharmacy at the state capitol. Many of our members attended APhA2013 and enjoyed networking with members from other chapters in our region. In April, we are planning to co-host an Etiquette Dinner with the University of Iowa chapter of ASHP.
We are also hosting a chapter meeting with a guest speaker who will be discussing "Email and online etiquette". Finally, our chapter has been planning and preparing to host MRM 2013 in November!

"I really enjoyed hearing opinions from students
from around the country about the different
legislative efforts that APhA is involved in. It was
invigorating and really re-lit my fire for advocacy
in our profession. I also used my time at annual

Region 5 Chapter Updates
What have our chapters in Region 5 been up to? Check out the stories below! If you have any questions or would like to get in contact with any of these chapters, please contact Sarah Derr ([email protected]).
Hello from South Dakota State University!! Our chapter has been working on a lot of exciting projects! I will take this opportunity to highlight just a few. To kick off the
semester, we traveled out to the state capitol for Legislative Days. We had the opportunity to provide health screenings and discuss up-coming pharmacy legislation.
In the month of February, we partici-pated in the Script Your Future med-ication adherence challenge. We enjoyed representing the SDSU College of Pharmacy through this event last year and hope to continue working with this project in the future! Similarly, our chapter will be working with another national campaign this spring. Our Operation Heart committee was selected for a grant from the Million Hearts Campaign. We are planning activities for the month of March to effectively utilize this additional funding!
The service committee has also been very active this year and has many more activities for the spring. They started off the semester by making fleece baby blankets to donate to the local hospital to give to low-income families. They also volunteer at the Harvest Table soup kitchen and set up times at the Backpack Project to package food bags that are given out to low-income families. The committee has also set up a team for the Chil-dren’s Miracle Network State-A-Thon event and is developing fund-raisers specifically for this event.
If you are interested in holding any similar events at your chapter, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]!
I am very proud of Drake APhA-ASP’s accomplishments and hard work throughout the past year! We were able to bring 23 students to LA for APhA2013, where we were presented with the Region 5 Generation Rx Award. Our chapter has focused on collaboration as a central theme this year, whether it be with other patient care initiatives, other organizations, or other univer-sities. We had the opportunity to work with our state association, IPA and University of Iowa, to hold Capi-tal Hill Screenings. We have worked with other organizations on campus to bring in speakers, work on a campaign, hold events, and increase awareness of initiatives such as Script Your Future. Patient care chairs have increased visibility at larger screenings or health fairs, through working with one another to
attend these events together and share new opportunities with one another.
One of our upcoming plans involves work with our umbrella organization to bring our patient care initiatives and educational programs to a health fair held at a local mall. We will also be teaming up with Univer-sity of Iowa to hold the 2nd Annual I-80 Screenings. Other events
include dietician tours, mentor mentee events, initiation of a new diabetes education program targeting elementary students.
Some future goals for our chapter include increasing student involve-ment, working more closely with other health care associated stu-dents, and motivating student phar-macists to be more active in advo-cating for our profession.

Drake APhA2013 provided me with the opportunity to not only give me tools to improve
our chapter and motivate me to become a better leader, but also provided me
with skills and ideas to help shape me into an even better future pharmacist. I
loved the opportunity to interact with so many inspirational, passionate student
pharmacists who will no doubt make a significant impact on our profession. This
meeting is a great way to not only meet new people, but also to better get to
know those I have met at past meetings. I was impressed by our chapter’s ability
to truly get to know one another and form even closer relationships throughout
the weekend!
– Nicole McCombs (Drake University)
I had a really great time at the annual meeting and learned a lot. It was inspiring to see all the energy and hard work that student pharmacists put into
improving patient care and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to attend the 2013 meeting! It was an awesome first meeting! -Colleen O’Connell (South Dakota State University)
Creighton University is currently promoting and accepting committee chair applications. The executive board is planning and preparing a group and individual transitions for the new and outgoing committee chair members. Some of our current projects are:
Medication Take Back, Black Family Health Fair, Blood Pres-sure Squad (Script Your Future in partnership with Operation Heart), and fundraise for Uganda Community Service Project. The chapter will be voting on our sen-ior award for our spring banquet during our next general meeting
as well as being educated on pharmaceutical research and phase I & II trial by an expert in the field. Our main goal during this upcoming month is to encourage members to apply to be active leaders in our APhA chapter as committee chair officers.

Spring semester for APhA-ASP at the University of Minnesota = advocacy, advocacy, advocacy! On February 19th, our state association (MPhA) organized the annual Minnesota Legislative Day. After a briefing on the major topics related to current and upcoming legislation, pharmacists and student pharmacists met with state senators and representatives to dis-cuss issues and upcoming legislation that will affect pharmacy, pharmacists, student pharmacists and our patients. Secondly, student pharmacists have formed a committee to provide feedback to the steering committee on the complete rewriting of the Minnesota Pharmacy Practice Act.
This act has only gone through minor revisions since 1937 and currently limits the scope of practice of Minnesota pharmacists. Student pharmacists are working to ensure that our voice is heard regarding the changes that will affect the future of our profession in the state of Minneso-ta. Finally, we had 73 students attend the annual meeting in Los Angeles and after debriefing as a chapter, we are inspired to make some big changes for the upcoming year.
Although advocacy has been a major theme this semester, we have also been busy with community outreach. Through the month of February, the University of Minnesota has
participated in Script Your Future's inter-professional 2013 Medication Adherence Team Challenge. Through this campaign, our chapter partnered with other professional students and local outreach organizations to pro-mote health-related goal setting and medication adherence. We have also been working to expand our outreach through GenerationRx. We are excit-ed to begin presenting to high school students in addition to the middle school students we have presented to in the past!
