Whilenopreciseformulaappliestodeterminetherequiredquantityofpressurereliefdevices(PRDs)forprotection,itistypicaltoapplythefollowinggeneralrule:Useonepressurereliefdeviceforeach10,000gallonsofcoolingliquidcapacityorfraction thereof. Some specifications require the useofpressurereliefdevicesontransformersratedat1,000KVAorhigherbutmanyQUALITROLLPRDsareinuseontransformersratedaslowas300KVA.Ultimately,thechoiceofthesizeandquantityofPRDstoinstallcomesdowntotherisklevelanoperatoriswillingtooperateat.
QUALITROLLPRDsaretypicallymountedintherecommendedhorizontalorientationwiththetopsideup,however,theymaybesidemounted(verticalorientation)aswell.Intheseinstallations,when the device is mounted below the fluid level, thenormalheadpressuremustbeconsideredwhendeterminingtheoperatingvalueoftheLPRD.Inaddition,provisionshouldbemadeforproperclearanceoftheoperationindicator,andoptimalorientationoftheelectricalconnection.
Components and accessories
Alarm switches • Each pressure relief device can be specified withuptotwoalarmswitches(with4contacts) thatwillactivateuponvalveoperation • Switch contacts can be specified as latching or momentaryoperation,SPDTorDPDT,highDC, orlowcurrentgoldcontacttype,andwith` connector, terminal box, or flying lead styleconnections
Directional shield • Directionalshieldmountsontopofpressurerelief device and is specifically designed for ease of retrofit applications • Redirects flow of hot oil and gas away from personnelorcriticalpartsonthetransformer • Shieldaccommodatesuptotwoalarmswitches andanindicator
Operation indication semaphore • Optional semaphore (flag) provides visual indicationofactuationandisavailableindifferent colorsandmaterials • Compatiblewithdirectionalshieldand alarmswitches
Gas bleed system • Foruseinapplicationswherepressurerelief deviceismountedbelowtheoillevel • Providesameansbywhichtrappedgases canbepurgedfromthewettedchamberof thepressurereliefdevice
