Music in Worship: Sunday, October 7, 2018 Thanksgiving SundayIntroit: Nun danket alle Gott Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706)

Now thank we all our God, who overall does wondrous things;Who prospers us from our mothers’ arms, and does every good for us.Give us a joyful heart, and forever grant peace in our times in Israel. May his grace ever abide with us, and redeem us as long as we live. Now thank we all our God, with hearts, mouths and hands, who does wondrous things for us and all others,Who from our mothers’ arms and since our childhood has done immeasurable good to us.

–Martin Rinckart (1586-1649)

Anthem: Te Deum in GRalph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father everlasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry:Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise Thee. The goodly fel-lowship of the prophets praise Thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee. The Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee, the Father, of an infinite majesty, Thine honourable, true, and only Son; also the Holy Ghost the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the Virgin’s womb. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints, in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage. Govern them and lift them up forever. Day by day we magnify Thee and we worship Thy name, ever world without end. Vouchsafe O Lord to keep us this day without sin, O Lord, have mercy upon us, O Lord let Thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded.

-Sts. Ambrose and Augustine, ca. AD 387; translation from the Book of Common Prayer.

About this morning’s choral and organ music…Today, we commonly sing the hymn “Now Thank we all our God” on joyful occasions. However, the Lutheran pastor Martin Rinckart wrote the text under dreadful conditions, during a plague epidemic in Eilenburg in 1637. During that time he was performing as many as 40 funerals per week, a situation we in the modern West cannot fathom. The great composer Johann Pachelbel was no stranger to tragedy either, having lost his entire family during a plague epidemic around the time he composed this morning’s introit. It is written in two sections, both typical of the central-German choral school pioneered by Heinrich Schütz and Michael Praetorius: the first is a double-choir, responsorial fanfare; the sec-ond is in motet style, in which the lower three voices sing free fugal imitations of each line of the hymn, while the sopranos carry the melody in long, sustained notes. Legend has it that the ancient church hymn “Te Deum” was first sung extempo-raneously by Sts. Ambrose and Augustine while the former baptised the latter in AD 387. It has been a seminal document in Christian worship ever since, and was adopted as one of the canticles of Mattins (see above) in the 16th-century Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Ralph Vaughan Williams’ mighty setting is for two SATB choirs who often sing antiphonally, in an acoustic depiction of the text’s references to hosts of angels, the heavens, the nobel army of martyrs, cherubim and seraphim, etc.: in summary, the entire created order’s worship of almighty God. Vaughan Williams wrote very little original organ music; this morning’s prelude includes three pieces arranged for the organ by his illustrious contemporary Herbert Sumsion. All three are fine examples of the composer’s love of English folk music; while none use actual folk melodies, the modal, earthy flavour of the people’s music shines through in the Carol and Romanza. Particularly in the Musette, we can almost see the shepherds playing their fifes, dancing with their flocks. Sir Edward Elgar’s (1857-1934) magisterial Sonata in G major, op. 28, is the composer’s only major organ work, and is conceived in the composer’s grand style. Star-crossed from the beginning, it was rejected for publication by Elgar’s regular English publisher Novello (due to its length and complexity), and was finally issued by Breitkopf & Härtel of Leipzig. Elgar was also late in finishing the manuscript, such that Hugh Blair, the organist who played the premiere per-formance at Worcester Cathedral (whose organ was at the time in the midst of a controversial rebuild), only received the score on a weeks’ notice. –JO

Music News at St. Andrew and St. Paul

“Meet the Choir Month” begins this morning right after the service in the narthex, with the Soprano section of the Choir of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul meeting and greeting the congregation. This is your chance to converse with a Soprano, to talk informally and exchange views and opinions on music and worship with the singers whose voices soar high above all others. Come and spend a few moments with the vocalists who usually sing the highest vocal line in the Choir, but can definitely come down from the stratosphere to communicate with all of us on common ground!

Welcoming Sandra SteadmanWe are very pleased to share the news that Mrs. Sandra Steadman will join our A&P staff on Tuesday, October 8 as our new Office Manager. Sandy is a life-long Presbyterian who brings to this role extensive accounting and volunteer experience, along with skills in taxation. Do take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself to Sandy the next time you are in the office.
