In the Old Testament, the writer of 1 Chronicles gives us a bird’s-eye view of Israel’s history, then takes a closer look at the triumphs and growing pains of David’s fledgling kingdom. In the New Testament, Paul sails for Rome to present his case before Caesar and to bring the Good News to the heart of the world’s greatest empire. The voyage is fraught with storms, shipwrecks, and snakebites, but God is with Paul all the way.

WHERE I SAW JESUS IN THE OLD TESTAMENTMY VERSE OF THE WEEK

A W A Y T O S E E

This week, we make our fi rst foray into Paul’s letters! In Romans, the great apostle tells us just how Christ’s death and resurrection free us from the power of sin. In the Old Testament, we get another perspective on the end of David’s reign and the beginning of Solomon’s. In a scene not recorded anywhere else in Scripture, David personally entrusts Solomon with the details for his most important job as king: to build the Temple of the Lord.

Paul continues his letter to the Romans by emphasizing the love and mercy of God. God offers salvation to everyone, Paul reminds the Christians of Rome, regardless of what is in their past. In the Old Testament, 2 Chronicles records the sad division of the Israelite kingdom. The Chronicler continues his focus on the history of Judah, the southern kingdom, as its people contend with powerful enemy nations and with the constant temptations of idolatry.
