"He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up." Did you grow up in a small town?

Whenever you see stories of tight-knit communities, a common refrain is that

everybody knows everybody and that's very dif#icult to change. If you leave and

return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it's strange for them if

you do not. In today's Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving "in the power

of the Spirit and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He...was

praised by all." His ministry has begun! News of his growing popularity must have

proceeded him to Nazareth. Upon his arrival, he "went according to his custom

into the synagogue on the sabbath day." For the #irst few moments, he is what

they expect - their hometown boy returning to pay his respects. As was common

of men at the time, he takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a

bold passage, one he selects intentionally. "He unrolled the scroll and found the

passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me." After reading

about holy anointings, liberation for the poor and prisoners, and physical

healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. "'Today this Scripture passage is ful#illed in

your hearing.'" We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might

mean doing the unexpected! All too often we're content with the daily status quo,

and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Christian values,

change our lifestyle to re#lect the Gospel, and work for justice in society, we may

make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn't call us to the same life we lived

yesterday or the year before that. He is calling all of us - each and every one of us -

to deeper conversion of heart. No matter what other people expect, will you love

in the Spirit of the Lord today?

The Seed The Seed The Seed The Seed Grow where you are planted.

January 27, 2018

Listen, listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life?

Mary Oliver, from “Have You Ever Tried to Enter the Long Black Branches?” West Wind: Poems and Prose Poems

Two weeks ago Saint Henry Cluster welcomed Terry Nelson-Johnson for a retreat for our Con#irmation students and to speak to parents in the cluster. Terry taught for a number of years at a Catholic high school before moving into parish ministry full-time more than twenty years ago. Between parish missions, con#irmation retreats, and speaking engagements, we were one of roughly 120 engagements for him this year.

At his heart, Terry is a story-teller. During the Con#irmation retreat, he let our students into stories from his family with his wife, son, and daughter, as well as stories from students. His daughter going off the high dive at the age of seven or eight. Driving every single family day to visit his son in rehab. His daughter’s college application essay. There’s something fascinating and deeply insightful from every story I’ve ever heard Terry tell, even the ones I had not previously heard. There were two big things that stood out from Terry being with us a few weeks ago. First, Terry shared

during his parent talk one of the current things he does in his parish in helping with funerals, particularly with adults in their 40s and 50s who are burying their parents and haven’t been to church themselves for years. He talked about the awkwardness, the unfamiliarity, the imagination around sacraments that’s not quite fully there. The music, the gestures, the actions during the mass - they’re familiar but they’re not quite there in the passed-down kind of way. Terry pointedly asked parents, “What are we passing down to the next generation? At our funerals, will our children be #luent in the richness of our church?” It’s a big question we ask, what are we handing down to the next generation? For a parish with as large of a religious education program as we have, it’s a fundamental question.

Assuming it will be passed down because we’ve always done it that way doesn’t really ensure it. Second, Terry wrapped up the Con#irmation retreat undefeated in stand-off and concluding to our students that to be Con#irmed is to commit and to begin a life of loving service in the church and in the world. A life of love and service. Our typical thoughts around Con#irmation are that it’s a graduation from CCD, one last hoop to jump through for teenagers and church, and as most bishops around the world are beginning to call Con#irmation - the sacrament of goodbye. Seeing Con#irmation as a sealing

of the fact that we are unconditionally and irrevocably loved, that each and every one of us has gifts to offer, that each and every one of us has something to receive from others as well, that Con#irmation sends us forth to share those gifts and that love in the world - this turns the perceived graduation ceremony that Con#irmation is upside down. Thank you to those who helped the Con#irmation retreat go so smoothly despite the poor weather conditions. Thank you to our Con#irmation students who gave their energy and attention to Terry

throughout the retreat. Thank you to the parents, grandparents, and members of our faith communities who came out to hear Terry speak Monday evening.

Fr. Jim Smith

Remember that time when you arrived at school to take a test or quiz on material you failed to read? Maybe it was on a classic book or a chapter in a science textbook. Did your blood pressure go sky high and the sweat start to show on your forehead? Squirming in the seat, you wondered what you could have done to avoid feeling this way. Then it came to you: you should have read what you were supposed to read! Procrastination, indifference, poor scheduling of time, and stubbornness are all reasons why we fail to be prepared for a situation that arises in our lives. We lack commitment in doing what we are asked to do or what we know we should do. This is certainly true in our spiritual lives as well. We may choose to bear the label of disciple or good steward, but we don't really prepare ourselves for the daily journey of life. Sacred Scripture can prepare us more fully for the circumstances of life, but not if we fail to read it. The words contained there are Spirit and life for us. They help us to understand where we #it into the Body of Christ and how we are to respond to the daily call of Christ. Everyday Stewards should be committed to reading and re#lection of the Word of God. We know we should spend time with God's Word, but too often we fail to due to the same reasons already mentioned. When we failed to read in school, perhaps we failed the test and it hurt our grade. When we fail in life due to lack of preparedness, sometimes the consequences are more severe.
