and ThankYou forrequesting ourGardenTunnels brochureHaygrove are established soft fruit growers producingstrawberries, raspberries and cherries, mainly organically, attheir farm near Ledbury in Herefordshire. We are majorsuppliers to Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’sand have received a number of national awards for the qualityberries we produce.

In the early 1990’s, exasperated by the lack of quality Britishsoft fruit available due to our unpredictable weather, wedeveloped the Haygrove Tunnel. 20 years on, HaygroveTunnels are used worldwide by commercial growers requiringstrong, quality, innovative crop protection.

The development of Haygrove Garden Tunnels began in 2009.Harnessing our experience in large scale greenhouse structureswith our passion for growing, we aim to provide a qualityproduct, competitively priced and incorporating featurespreviously only available to commercial growers.

We hope you enjoy reading through our brochure and inparticular our customer testimonials of which we are veryproud.

If you would like to talk through any aspects of our GardenTunnels please call us on our local rate number 0845 269 6395.

Structure and VentingStrength

Spring steel hoop clips ensureeasy clipping of the plastic ontothe steel frame.

The Garden Tunnel is built on agalvanised steel base, strongenough to be moved later ifrequired. Thanks to 10 strongvolunteers, this 4m x 8m tunnelis on the move across acustomer’s garden!

The cover is UV treated toensure we can guarantee it forfive years against UVdegredation. The material has88% light transmission meaningit performs better than glass, with a light transmission of 65-85% depending on pane sizeand glasshouse structure. In addition the cover has theability to diffuse or scatter lightas it enters the tunnel. Thismeans the tunnel is cooler in hotweather and plant scorch riskdramatically reduced, as lightpenetrates deeper into theplant’s canopy. This is bestdemonstrated on bright sunnydays when there is littleshadowing in a Haygrove Tunnel.

No concrete base is required, the structure is built on agalvanised steel skid anchoredwith 800mm (2’ 6”) longanchoring posts. In each 2mtunnel section, four steelanchors are driven into theground, each anchor beingmade from 18mmm galvanisedreinforced steel bar.

Galvanised SteelStructureGalvanised steel is usedthroughout the Haygrove Tunnelframe, including doors, sidevents and the base anchoringsystem. The grade of steel isspecified as Z35, the structuralsteel grade used in theconstruction industry and notthe mild steel grades often usedto cheapen products. It isgalvanised to the BritishStandard of 275grams/m2 with aHaygrove Tunnel you are buying astrong, long lasting structure, giving excellent resistance to rustand strong wind conditions. Nowood, No nails, No Nonsense!

Tunnel CoverHaygrove Garden Tunnels arecovered with a unique, highquality, coated woven polythenecloth. With a breaking strengthof 18kg per 1cm2 it’s strongenough to sit on!

SMART Venting SystemRoll-up, roll-down ventilation designed across the complete lengthof each tunnel side. This means the structures can be completelysealed for earliness and frost protection but fully ventilated forsummer production. The net below each vent protects againstinsects such as thrips and whitefly so you can fully vent aHaygrove Tunnel whilst still retaining a pest free growingenvironment. Allows the air in, keeping insects out!

Very impressed with thework rate of theconstruction team.Polytunnel looks verygood, it will be a mostuseful addition to theallotment.”

A number of schools are working with Haygrove tocreate a fantastic outdoor classroom for pupils of allages. The strong construction provides a lowmaintenance structure with stray footballs bouncing offthe plastic cover without damage! The tall sided tunnelprofile maximises working space with 1m wide doors providinggood access for wheelbarrows, wheelchairs etc. During warmerweather a cooler environment is created by venting the tunnel andthe light diffusing covers take away the uncomfortable glare oftenproduced by other plastics. Frequently Asked QuestionsHow tall are the Tunnels? At the apex - all between 2.3m and2.5m depending on the width. At the sides - all 2m tall, which meansyou can work right to the edge of thetunnel without bending over.

What are the door options? You have a choice to select a door forone end or both ends. All doors aremade in steel and are 1m wide solarge wheelbarrows, gardenmachinery, wheelchairs etc are easilyaccessible.

How long will the plastic last? The plastic is guaranteed for 5 yearsagainst UV degradation, although ourexperience is that growers are using itfor longer.

Do I need hot spot tape toprotect the plastic from thehoops? We recommend placing anti-hot spottape over the section of the hoopwhere they are bolted together. Thiswill prevent any undue wear on theplastic covers. The required amountof anti-hot spot tape is provided withthe covers.

What happens if the polythenegets damaged? The only real way that the polythenewill tear is if someone cuts it with aknife or a very heavy objects falls onit. If you do get a tear we can supplya polythene repair kit.

Will the steel rust? No, all the steel is galvanisedincluding the anchors that are driveninto the ground. The steel frameshould last at least 15 to 20 yearsdepending on how close you are tothe sea.

How do you secure theplastic onto the steel frame? At each end the plastic is securedonto the gable ends using sprungsteel hoop clips. At the base theplastic is zip locked into a steelchannel. These are both proventechnologies used in the commercialgreenhouse business.

How resistant is the Tunnel tosnow? The tunnels are built to withstandany normal snow storm that occursin the UK. We do recommend thatsnow is brushed off the tunnel as aprecaution to stop any further buildup later.

How resistant is the Tunnel towind?Haygrove Tunnels are built towithstand gale force winds of 60mph (90km). Following last winter anumber of our customers who haveour tunnels on exposed sites, havecontacted us to say that theirstructures remained intact at speedsgreater than this.

How is the structureanchored to the ground? No concrete or foundation work isrequired. The structures areanchored using 800mm (2’6’’ long)reinforced galvanised steel bars thatare driven into the ground. There are 4 anchors for every 2mtunnel section.

How much does areplacement cover cost? The covers are about 20% of thecost of the tunnel.

What can I grow in myTunnel?Flowers, vegetables, fruit – prettymuch anything. For many crops, such as strawberries it is possible toextend the growing season from 6-8to 22-24 weeks.

Can I use heat?Yes, the plastic will withstand heat. For the best results we wouldrecommend a plastic baffle or falsewall is dropped from one hoopinside the tunnel to create aconfined space for more efficientheating.

How do I clean my Tunnel? The plastic cover is best cleanedwith water and a soft brush.Heavier dirt can be removed using amild washing-up liquid solution witha cloth or soft brush.

Good positioning of your Garden Tunnel makes abig difference to how it functions. Consider thefollowing when deciding where to site yourstructure.

To maximise light availability, don’t site your tunnel directly undertrees and hedges. Apart from shading, leaves will get onto theplastic covers and allow mould and lichen to take hold. If possibleavoid north facing slopes where light levels are worse. Asheltered site is good to protect tunnels from heavy winds. Thediagram below illustrates the value of windbreaks to reduce thespeed of wind and provide natural shelter for the Tunnel.

For example if the wind break is 3m (10ft) high then the windspeed will be only 25 to 50% of it’s open field velocity up to 15m(50ft) from the wind break.

Wind behaves like water. This means that if thewind is forced through narrower areas it willdramatically pick up speed. Therefore it isimportant, where possible, to avoid building thestructure directly in front of a gateway or gap inthe hedge where the wind will be forced toaccelerate.

A Haygrove Tunnel is much more forgiving than a glasshouse andwill easily work on gently sloping land. However, ensure that anyslope it consistent and not undulating by filling in any dips with soil.

Tunnel Tips

SpringSpring temperatures can vary enormously with large day tonight variations. Haygrove’s unique venting system allows youto regulate the temperature within the tunnel reducing peaks and troughs.Combining this with insulation and heat during spring allows you to start early planting. As the woven plastictunnel cover diffuses light, tender seedlings have protection from bright spring sun, allowing a strong plant todevelop. Before you can be sure of frost free nights use the hanging basket points to start getting your summerbedding established.

AutumnAlongside improved crop quality andconsistency, the biggest advantage ofgrowing in a protected environment isthe ability to extend your growingseason. The blue line on the graphshows the temperature achieved within aHaygrove Garden Tunnel, compared withthat outside (green line) during a day inOctober. At 2pm the internal temperaturewas 6°C higher than that outside thetunnel and with insulation this heat canbe easily retained to extend the mid-daypeak. There are many improved varietiesdeveloped for autumn planting to allowcropping right through the winter months.

WinterAs daylight decreases don’t forget to clean off your tunnel tomaximise light availability to plants.A Haygrove tunnel doesn’t need specific cleaning products, amild detergent solution and soft brush will do just fine. When temperatures are at their coldest its important to seal yourtunnel, using the hoop clips to secure the side vents to the steelframe. In addition to insulation, for growers who need to maintaina constant heat for sensitive crops additional heating can beused. For those who don’t need to heat the whole tunnel a ‘room’can be made by attaching a plastic baffle curtain to the internalhoops on each 2m section. As well as winter growing your tunnelalso provides a great storage area to overwinter pots containingdelicate plants.

SummerManaging temperature and relative humidity is one of the biggest challenges facing the grower. This may seemremarkable in a British summer but we know that most crops turn off their metabolism when they get too hotand sweaty. In warm weather plants cool down by transpiring through their leaves but when relative humidity increases, theatmosphere’s ability to absorbwater is reduced and so plantsstart to ‘shut down.’ When theoutside temperature is 18°C(average UK Summer) the insideof your tunnel can quickly exceed25°C. This is why as experiencedgrowers we designed tunnels tohave full ventilation along bothsides with a protective thrip netto ensure the fully ventedstructure remains insect proof.Experience will show that evenwhen temperatures of 18°C areforecast growers should reactearly and open vents to ensurethe tunnel keeps cool and yourplants are fully productive.
