THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST | DECEMBER 24, 2018 SERVICE
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the
blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. ~ Titus 2:11-13
“The Son of God became a man to enable men to become sons of God.”
~ C.S. Lewis

We are a church that enjoys God so that we reflect His Way. Our desire is to grow in knowledge and love of God and infuse his Grace and Truth into everything we do. We have found a family here, and we want this church to feel like a family for you, too.
This desire to enjoy God has motivated us to gather for corporate worship that is both ancient and modern: grounded in the words of scripture, patterned after the worship of the early church, and relevant for our lives today.
This worship guide is intended to help you worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23) Our liturgy (order of worship) is complex and full of meaning. Whether you’ve worshipped at Grace your entire life or if this is your first time with us, we want our worship to be both authentic and informed. Because the Gospel permeates our entire liturgy, we’ve structured this bulletin to call attention to the work of the Spirit through our words. The sidebar on each page contains notes to define terms and give scriptural context for our songs and prayers.
Singing is an essential element of our gathering. You may notice any range of instruments and musical styles on display this morning, but the singing of God’s people remains the main instrument. As we sing the words of our hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs, we know that the messa ge of Christ is dwelling among us richly (Col. 3:16).
If you have children, you have a few options: Children aged 4-9 are welcome in Children’s Church located in our Office Building across the street. Here we take the weekly readings and translate them into fun activities that match your child’s ability to understand. You and your child will receive the same message, so that you can fully explore these ideas together during the rest of the week. We also provide a small healthy snack and a restroom opportunity just before we come into the Sanctuary at the Passing of the Peace – we want the children to be ready to enjoy family time together in Church! Every other week during the school year, our Connect Youth Church (grades 4 and up) is in Grace Hall, across from Children’s Church, also during the first half of the service. The kids will be back to church for Communion. Lastly, the Nursery is open during the whole service for children ages 0-3.
Before The Service BeginsPick a song in the bulletin and silently pray the words to yourself. We have found this practice to incline our hearts toward Jesus before we even begin our liturgy together.
Read and meditate on the scripture passages for the day.

The Collect for the Nativity of Our Lord
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
Collect of the DayThis prayer is centered around the readings of the day. As we prepare to receive the food of God’s Word, our Celebrant (lead pastor) prays this prayer to focus our hearts and minds on God’s Word.

The First Reading
Reader Isaiah 9:2-7
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it

The Psalm Psalm 96
Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing to the Lord, all the whole earth.
Sing to the Lord and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples.
For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods.
As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the Lord who made the heavens.
Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary!
Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the Lord honor and power. Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him.

T h e L i T u r g y o f T h e W o r dTell it out among the nations: “The Lord is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”
Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein.
Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth.
Reader Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
People As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Gradual Hymn Joy To The World Hymn 100
Joy to the world! the Lord is come: let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Joy to the world! the Savior reigns; let us our songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains, repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.
The Gospel Luke 2:1-20
DeaconThe Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke.
People Glory to You, Lord Christ.
Deacon In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all
Joy To The World Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11
Gospel ReadingAs God’s Word has come down the aisle to literally “dwell among us,” we stand for this Gospel reading to show the particular importance we place on the words and actions of Jesus.

L i t u r g i c a L g u i d ethe world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see-- I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

The Nicene Creed
Celebrant Let us stand together and affirm our faith with the words of the Nicene Creed:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen;
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from theVirgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer
Celebrant Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Celebrant
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling His death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer You these gifts.
Sanctify them by Your Holy Spirit to be for Your people the Body and Blood of Your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in Him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all Your saints into the joy of Your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through Your Son Jesus Christ. By Him, and with Him, and in Him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is Yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread

Corporate Songs During Communion
Away In A Manger Hymn 101
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay; the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,and stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay close by me forever and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care; and fit us for heaven to live with thee there.
Away In A MangerFor we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

L i t u r g i c a L g u i d e It Came Upon A Midnight Clear Hymn 89
It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth,to touch their harps of gold:“Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven’s all-gracious King.”The world in solemn stillness lay,to hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they comewith peaceful wings unfurled, and still their heavenly music floatso’er all the weary world;above its sad and lowly plainsbend on hovering wing, and ever o’er its Babel soundsthe blessed angels sing.
Yet with the woes of sin and strifethe world has suffered long;beneath the heavenly hymn have rolledtwo thousand years of wrong;and warring humankind hears not the tidings which they bring;O hush the noise and cease your strife and hear the angels sing!
For lo! the days are hastening on,by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling yearsshall come the time foretold, when peace shall over all the earthits ancient splendors fling, and the whole world give back the songwhich now the angels sing.
It Came Upon A Midnight Clear There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. Luke 2:8-9

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,in the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign:in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficedthe Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ.
Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;but his mother only, in her maiden bliss, worshiped the beloved with a kiss.
What can I give him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;if I were a wise man, I would do my part;yet what I can I give him--give my heart.
