Netterville Manor
“The red rose whispers of passion, And the white rose breathes of love;
O, the red rose is a falcon,And the white rose is a dove”
John Boyle O’Reilly
Introduction
John Boyle O’Reilly
The densely fertile landscape of the magnificent Boyne Valley is Ireland’s most majestic and
historic landscape punctuated with the wealth of the past from the great High Kings of Ireland,
world renowned pre historic sites, to The Battle of the Boyne and monuments all within a walking
distance of Netterville Manor and Castle.
From the top floor of the castle the eye can enjoy spectacular views that sweep west along the
River Boyne, punctuated by Newgrange, Knowth, The Hills of Tara and Slane.
The estate nestles in wonderfully mature parkland throughout the Boyne Valley, tracks of peat
land and beautiful coastlines stretching 12 kilometres long.
One of Ireland’s most famous writers, poets and novelists,
John Boyle O’Reilly was born at Netterville on the circa18
June 1844.
As a youth in Ireland he was a member of the Irish Republican
Brotherhood, for which crime he was transported to Western
Australia. After escaping to the United States, he became
a prominent spokesperson for Irish sentiment and culture,
through his editorship of The Pilot, his prolific writing, and
his lecture tours.
He has been quoted many times by prominent dignitaries
and politicians including President J.F. Kennedy. There are
a number of areas throughout Netterville Manor grounds
dedicated to his memory and his works.

“You gave me the key of your heart, my love; then why did you make me knock?
Oh that was yesterday, saints above! And last night -- I changed the lock!”

But the world is small, when your enemyis loose on the other side.”

A Bend in the River
Nearby a battlefield lies; teeming with vivid memories of Irish and British history, the Battle of the Boyne site
has been transformed to a world-class visitor centre, where one can experience and once again capture the
strategies of times past, when William III gained victory over his father-in-law, James II on 1st July 1690. The
battlefield continues to play a significant role in Irish history.

“Though it lash the shallows that line the beach,Afar from the great sea-deeps,
There is never a storm whose might can reachWhere the vast leviathan sleeps.
Like a mighty thought in a mighty mindIn the clear cold depths he swims;
Whilst above him the pettiest form of his kindWith a dash o’er the surface skims.”
