GPU or Many Core – The Two Swim LanesNot that Simple

Headlines like “Intel Declares War on GPUs at Disputed HPC, AI Border” and “Intel Details AI Hardware Strategy for Post-GPU Age” ignore the benefit that this behemoth tussle has for users of High Performance compute and industry in general.

Performing complex algorithmic compute, AI and deep learning is no longer the preserve of those with big budgets. Access to small and midsize clusters utilising many core and GPU will enable small business & individuals to drive innovation.

At SC16 there were few ground-breaking announcements but what we have seen over the year is the general availability of some of the key new technologies and the GREEN500 has already seen 4 of the TOP 5 systems running NVIDIA® Tesla® P100 or Intel® Xeon Phi™.
