Michael Phelps, greatest Olympian ever, Finds purpose and meaning in his life. He took “The

Narrow Gate…”

In the months and even years leading up to the 2016 Rio Olympics, much of the news about Michael Phelps was not good. In September of 2014, he was arrested for driving while under the influence in his hometown of Baltimore. As Phelps told ESPN, following his announced retirement in 2012, he struggled to “figure out who he was outside the pool.” In his words, “I was a train wreck. I was like a time bomb, waiting to go off. I had no self-esteem, no self-worth. There were times where I didn’t want to be here. It was not good. I felt lost.” Like a lot of people struggling with similar feelings, he self-medicated.

In the immediate aftermath of that DUI arrest, he cut himself off from family and other loved ones and “thought the world would just be better off without me . . . I figured that was the best thing to do — just end my life.” That’s when a friend came to his rescue: former All Pro linebacker Ray Lewis, whom Phelps considers a kind of “older brother.” Seeing the hopelessness and despair in his young friend, Lewis, an outspoken Christian, told him, “This is when we fight . . . This is when real character shows up. Don’t shut down. If you shut down, we all lose.” Lewis convinced Phelps to enter rehab and gave him a book to read while he was there: “The Purpose-Driven Life” by his friend Rick Warren. The book changed Phelps’ life. Within a few days, Phelps called Lewis and told him “‘Man this book is crazy . . . The thing that’s going on . . . oh my gosh . . . my brain, I can’t thank you . . . enough, man. You saved my life.’” As Phelps told ESPN, Rick Warren’s book “turned me into believing there is a power greater than myself and there is a purpose for me on this planet.” The book, which tells readers that “relationships are always worth restoring,” also convinced Phelps to reconcile with his father from whom he had been estranged for more than two decades. Upon seeing each other, they embraced. As the whole world knows by now, Phelps won 6 gold medals at the Rio Olympics, bringing his overall total to a staggering 25, but his story of hope and restoration doesn’t really need any further embellishments—it’s miraculous enough. Michael Phelps’ story is a reminder that no matter how big a mess your life may be, and no matter how dim the last embers of hope may glow – 70,0000 needlessly died of opioids and heroin overdose in 2017 - God is still there. It’s also a reminder of the role that mentors and God’s people are called to play as bringers of hope and agents of restoration. Can you be a Ray Lewis to someone? All it takes is God acting through a friend, or, someone who cares. The results may not be as dramatic as Phelps’ story but they will matter every bit as much. Maybe, you could give a copy of Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose-Driven-Life” to someone you know who is struggling with drugs or drink, or, both.?

Van Dyck’s “Suffer Little Children to Come unto Me” (1620-1) Van Dyck's early painting Suffer little Children to come unto Me, (c1620-1), now in the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, contains an important message. The subject of this painting is Christ exhorting children to receive his message. Van Dyck developed the painting further suggesting that it is his apostles, on the left of the painting, and the family, on the right side of the painting, who are responsible for bringing children entrusted to their care to Jesus. It is a collaborative effort. It is a partnership. The painting appears to be the occasion of the First Communion of the young boy being blessed by Jesus. The implication in the painting is that it is important for the children to come to know and experience Jesus as a person.

Here is the evangelist Luke’s account of the incident:

“People were bringing their children to him that he might touch them, and when his disciples saw this, they rebuked them. Jesus, however, called the children to himself and said, ‘Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Luke 18: 15-17).

National Collection for Catholic University, Washington D.C.

Since 1903, The Catholic University of America has been greatly blessed by the generosity of parishioners around the country through the National Collection. James Cardinal Gibbons, its first chancellor and the ninth Archbishop of Baltimore, once called the collection “the people’s endowment.” Taking his words to heart, contributions from faithful parishioners have benefited generations of students.

A mission in service to the Church The mission of Catholic University centers on the discovery of knowledge and truth through excellence in teaching and research, all in service to the Church — a service that is greatly needed today. University faculty and scholars promote Catholic social teaching and, through their research and discourse, help form the Church’s response to challenging social issues of our time. In addition, Catholic University educates hundreds of priests and religious each year and can proudly call more than 12,000 of them alumni.

Faith is tangible at Catholic University Faith is expressed passionately through prayer, acts of charity, and a concern for justice. And, as a result, our students are transformed.

Guided by the virtues, a spirit of generosity, and — above all — a love for God, they grow in understanding and wisdom. The people’s endowment is more than tuition assistance — it is a legacy, built upon 130 years of education in the Catholic intellectual tradition. A second collection will be taken up at all masses weekend of September 7/8, 2019, to support scholarships for eligible Catholic students who would like to attend Catholic University of America in Washington D. C. Please be generous.

Do you know the first four lines of recorded speech?

The phonograph was developed as a result of Thomas Edison's work on two other inventions, the telegraph and the telephone. On August 12, 1877, Edison tested the phonograph by speaking the nursery rhyme into the mouthpiece, "Mary had a little lamb." To his amazement, the machine played his words back to him. The rhyme itself was written by Sarah Josepha in 1830 based upon a real incident that happened at a schoolhouse.

Here is the children’s rhyme:

Mary had a little lamb, whose fleece was white as snow. And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.

It followed her to school one day which was against the rules. It made the children laugh and play, to see a lamb at school. And so the teacher turned it out, but still it lingered near, And waited patiently about, till Mary did appear. "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" the eager children cry. "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know." the teacher did reply.

AS your children set out on Life’s journey, have you provided them with a guide, a travelling companion and a map. Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus is “The Narrow Gate…”

Have you signed your children up for the School of Religion?

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus is “the Narrow Gate…” Michael Phelps en-countered Jesus and, followed the “Narrow gate.”
