T he Warner knapsack is one of the most historically signi cant and inspirational items in our collection. It serves to illustrate what a

fundamental role our collections play in our mission to ensure that present and future generations learn from the struggles, sacri ces and victories that shaped the nations of North America and changed world history.

We are dedicated to making the museum and research facilities at Fort Ticonderoga the undisputed world leader in eighteenth-century militaria, manuscripts and material culture. We intend to restore Ticonderoga to its rightful place at the pinnacle of our nation’s and the northern Atlantic world’s eighteenth-century military history. To do this, we will continue to rely on the visionary leadership and support of our generous donors, our Board of Trustees and our unparalleled sta . anks to you, the future is very bright. When speaking of visionary and generous donors, Forrest Mars comes immediately to mind. His vision and generosity were central to the restoration of the old French barracks and their utilization as an education center and a state-of-the-art facility to display our collections. More such capacity will surely follow, but Forrest set the bar and pointed us in the right direction. ank you, Forrest. Your memory will always be cherished at Fort Ticonderoga. roughout my tenure as Chairman of the Board, I have had the pleasure of working with the “best in the business,” our CEO Beth Hill, her outstanding sta , our Board of Trustees and our volunteers. Together, they create a product that is the epitome of excellence. But it is only right that we specialize in excellence because our donors deserve nothing less. Our donors are the most loyal and generous of any in this business and are the vital fuel of our success.

 ank you.

Ticonderoga, March 27, 1837

Our museum collection has hundreds of thousands of objects, each with its own unique story. One stands out amongst the

others in its rarity and includes a timeless message. e Benjamin Warner knapsack was acquired by the Fort Ticonderoga Museum in 1928, and is one of only a few that remains from the Revolutionary War. is simple utilitarian item carried by Revolutionary War soldiers was hardly a trophy of war. However, Warner

recognized its value as a symbol of the struggle for liberty for which he fought. Most stunning is the message he left inside written in 1837 to his descendants — and to all of us: “Never surrender your libertys to a foren envador or an aspiring demegog.” is powerful message is a reminder of the responsibility we all have to protect our liberty. It is also a tangible link to the struggle for this freedom. At Fort Ticonderoga we are committed to preserving the relics of the past — our land, our structures, and our collections. We also recognize the tremendous opportunity we have to educate those who visit. Our goal is to engage our audience with a deeper understanding of the past in order to learn from it. Warner’s exhortation rings in our hearts and minds as we teach youth in the classroom and on-site, engage teachers from across America, train college students and young museum professionals, preserve and make accessible our collections, restore our historic structures, and bring Ticonderoga’s de ning history to life through daily programs and special events. Fort Ticonderoga is nancially strong. We welcomed more than 75,000 visitors in 2016, an 8% increase in paid attendance over 2015. We deliver rst-class educational programs and are internationally acclaimed for our research and authentic interpretation. We are proud to have made signi cant strides in all areas of our work as we share the importance of Ticonderoga in the founding of our nation with a growing audience. Although we have accomplished a great deal, we know there is much work ahead. Your support is more important than ever to help us ensure that Benjamin Warner’s message is never forgotten.

With Gratitude,

Marching Forward In the Museum — Tangible Links to the Past

The past year has been transformative in the Museum Departments. Our sta added a full-time Collections Manager to oversee seven additional full-time project-based professional sta members. A major grant-funded project

was undertaken to preserve, catalog, document, and make accessible thousands of items. Collections storage spaces were reimagined to maximize shelving in top tier locations. Professional museum cabinets were purchased, thanks in part to a New York State Council on the Arts Grant, to properly house our vast archaeological collections. Items catalogued over the past year ranged from an 18th-century Native American dugout canoe, to early preservation-era Pell materials, to over 1,200 18th-century archaeological tools — the largest concentration from one site in North America. Also, tons of archaeological ammunition and objects documenting everyday life at Ticonderoga in the 18th century were included. is project was made possible by a matching $150,000 Institute of Museum and Library Services grant.

Tons of artillery was literally moved in 2016, and major conservation was undertaken on our world-renowned cannon collection. The award winning exhibit, “The Last Argument of Kings: The Art and Science of 18th-Century Artillery,” was designed and installed. This will run through October 2017. A mobile application included in this exhibition project will be unveiled in the summer of 2017 and will be readily available thanks to wireless connectivity installed in early 2017.

This 18th-century lock plate and bolt mechanism, recovered from the ruins of

the fort, is an example of the many archeological materials

pulled from the 2016-2017 garage project funded by the

Institute of Museum and Library Services. These objects have

been conserved, catalogued, and properly housed.“The Last Argument of Kings: The Art and Science of 18th-Century Artillery,”

The leading professional in 18th-century military material culture, Curator Matthew Keagle, crossed the Atlantic to present his latest research at a conference in Belgium on the role of objects in the

Revolution. Presentations such as this reinforce the global importance of Ticonderoga in history and our work today in the museum. e Fort Ticonderoga Museum acquired important new additions to its collections in 2016. anks to the generous gift of Tom Hagen, Fort Ticonderoga acquired an exceptionally rare manuscript journal written by John Lacey, a Pennsylvania o cer from the American Revolution who served in the defense of Ticonderoga. is acquisition adds immensely to the museum’s already strong collection of material relating to the regiment, including three orderly books, the papers of the regiment’s Quartermaster, eleven loose muster rolls, letters, and orders, including a return of Lacey’s company, Wayne’s instructions to him, and even the bill for Lacey’s uniform! e Lacey journals are also the rst personal account in the museum’s collection from the pivotal year 1776, making this acquisition a signi cant addition to our already rich collections.

Acquisitions

The Bulletin of the Fort Ticonderoga Museum was relaunched in 2016 after a 20-year hiatus. The Bulletin is an academic publication featuring the latest research conducted by the Fort Ticonderoga sta and other museum professionals and historians.

We have taken numerous steps to ful ll our strategic plan goal to preserve and restore our many historic structures. In 2016, major repair work on the east deck and south east bastion of the

fort was compleed. e Design Phase for the 1826 house, the Pavilion, built by William Ferris Pell, was completed thanks to a grant by the New York State Council on the Arts. is critical step lays the foundation for the $5 million restoration and adaptive reuse of the structure anticipated for completion in 2020.

The Fort Ticonderoga Log House was also a focus of research in 2016. John G. Waite Architects completed the Historic Structures Report for this important early 20th-century building.

“We enjoyed our visit very much! It was beyond our expectations. e sta were just a wealth of information and we walked away with a much greater understanding and respect for our founding history.”

F orrest Mars transformed Fort Ticonderoga. As a result of his almost twenty- ve years of visionary leadership, personal involvement, and extreme generosity, Ticonderoga stands as one of the nation’s preeminent

historic sites, committed to educating visitors and all Americans about the founding of our nation. Forrest cared deeply about American history and preserving our heritage. Most of all, he wanted to make an impact. He believed in the importance of sustaining the lessons and values at the core of our nation’s identity for future generations. e Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga is a shining example of Forrest’s love for history and education. His vision and conviction that our nation’ s well-being and prosperity are rooted in our unique history and the fundamental principles of our struggle for independence will always inspire our ever expanding educational programs. e Mars Education Center is a magni cent learning facility, which supports a comprehensive o ering of programs, conferences, institutes, and exhibits. As we develop new teacher programs, create innovative student learning experiences, both onsite and online, stimulate new research and dialogue among scholars, and launch scores of new public programs, we are keeping Forrest’s legacy alive. As he would have wished,

the real bene ciaries of his work are the tens of thousands of young people who participate in these programs each year. ose of us at Ticonderoga who were fortunate to have known Forrest personally can attest to his drive to succeed, his passion for history, his insistence on quality, and his bold vision to always make a di erence. For Forrest, gifts to Ticonderoga and many other historic sites were investments in making history come alive. Forrest Mars’ enduring legacy will remain a guiding light at Fort Ticonderoga.

2016 Operating Results — Our Success by the Numbers

Note: Surplus operating revenues in 2016 helped o set capital initiatives, expenses, and investments in our future. This included the installation of wireless connectivity on our museum campus, the restoration work on the Carillon boat, and the acquisition of reproduction items for this year’s education and interpretive programs.

Giving to Fort TiconderogaAs a private non-pro t educational organization, Fort Ticonderoga’s visitor ticket sales and other related operations income covers approximately 50% of our operating costs. We rely heavily on private support from donors like you to accomplish our mission of preservation and education.

Strong progress continued in 2016! We welcomed more than 75,400 guests with paid attendance, up 13% since 2012. During that period we also

increased admission revenues by 36%, membership support by 39%, and the number of individual donors by 35%, with contributions up 71%. Total operating revenues continue to grow signi cantly each year and in 2016 were up more than 24% over 2015, thanks to increased program revenue, the expansion of the Fort Ticonderoga experience, including Mount De ance and the Carillon boat, and strong sales in our café and museum store. Fundraising events, including the Ticonderoga Ball and the Garden Party, have also expanded with total revenues up 116% since 2012. During this same period, our endowment has grown by 56% and helped underwrite a wide variety of educational programs. A depiction of sources and uses of operating funds is at the left.
