“MERRY CHRISTMAS”

* About the unit: The unit deals with Christmas and Christmas traditions in Britain mainly, but the last part of the unit also describes some Spanish traditions, which are compared to the British ones.

* The main objectives of the unit are:

- To make the students familiar with the Christmas traditions in the UK and show them the differences with the Spanish customs. - To make the students aware of cultural differences and show respect and appreciation for them. - To help the students get the necessary listening, writing, reading and speaking skills so as to be able to ask for and give information about routines and customs, with special emphasis on those related to Christmas.

* Other useful considerations: It is important to remind the students that the buttons contained in the unit may be of great help for them. For that purpose, an icon guide is included. It is also advisable for the students to use the “Glossary”, “Help” and “Grammar” buttons. The instructions to carry out the different activities are given through a pop up produced when clicking on the “Task” button.

* Structure of the unit: “Merry Christmas” is made up of five parts, which follow a chronological order based on the Christmas festivities. Those parts can be dealt with separately, that is to say, in different class periods. Nevertheless, a forward linear sequence of the activities of each part is recommended since some exercises need previous practice.

Part 1: “Preparations” This first section is where Susie introduces herself and also tells us about her family. The main purpose of this section is to serve as an introduction to the whole unit. The following are the exercises to be completed: 1.1.- Vocabulary and pronunciation The aim of this exercise is to provide students with basic vocabulary about Christmas. Those terms will be used throughout the entire unit.

There is also the possibility to listen to the text. 1.2.- Scrambled letters Some letters in every line must be reorganised to form words learnt before. Part 2: “Christmas Eve” The objective of this second part is to help students become familiar with the cultural and traditional aspects of Christmas Eve Britain. 2.1.- Vocabulary There is a text for the students to read about Christmas Eve. For vocabulary learning, they

Students should reorganise the scrambled letters to find out the name of that dish. To help them, there are two very short pieces of recording included. 3.7.- Vocabulary We have here a vocabulary presentation to learn about the ingredients to cook a recipe. Spelling and pronunciation are associated to the pictures. Repetition of the pronunciation is recommended. 3.8.- Memory game

Besides, practice is given to students about the pronunciation of the “th”, with special emphasis on the dates (ordinals). 4.1.- Reading In this scene, the festivity of Boxing Day is introduced and described. Here, Present Simple questions and answers are practised. It is a recording exercise where students need to read a question, record and play it and then answer that question by doing the same thing to make up a dialogue between two characters. The whole dialogue could be listened to at the end. The activity can be carried out either in pairs or individually. If in pairs, one student will take Susie’s role whereas the other one will take Auntie Ann’s. 4.6.- Pronunciation Students are going to learn how to pronounce the two sounds for the “th” spelling in English. They have to click on both the phonetic symbols and the words to listen to them and repeat their pronunciation. 4.7.- Pronunciation In this matching exercise based on the pronunciation of the two sounds for the “th” in English, students have to listen to the words and decide which sound each one has. 4.8.- Recording Students have to listen to the words given and record their own pronunciation of them. At the

end, they will be able to listen to the whole recording.

Part 5: “Our traditions” The last part of the unit focuses on Spanish Christmas traditions and compares them with some British ones commented on before. A new character is presented, Teresa, who is Susie’s penpal. 5.1.- Vocabulary In this section, students are provided with new vocabulary about Christmas traditions in Spain. They will read and listen to what Susie is telling them and then click on the pictures to listen to them. 5.2.- Crossword This crossword will give students the opportunity for both vocabulary review and spelling practice. 5.3.- Reading & Listening In this case, Teresa (Susie’s penpal) shows an email she is sending to Susie to tell her about how Spanish people celebrate Christmas. There is also the possibility to listen to the text. 5.4.- Recording

When they finish recording everything, they will be able to listen to the whole dialogue. 5.5.- Writing The last activity of the unit is a writing task where Susie is going to answer Teresa’s email. Students have to help Susie and write it themselves. After writing it, the email should be sent to their teacher.
