Happy Summer! This has been quite a year! I hope this note finds you healthy and getting back to your new normal with children and families. We have learned quite a lot over the last year and a half and want to move forward with improved services and trainings for you to help you however we can. One of the things we are doing is continuing to offer a hybrid of trainings (e-trainings, Zoom, and face to face). We are also encouraging you to register via the link you find in the calendar online. This is the quickest and seemingly most reliable way to register. However, we will still offer paper registration (back of the calendar). Please do NOT register on both, as it messes up our numbers, just pick one way to register. We also have some exciting guest speakers lined up for you! July 27th Daniel Hodgins will talk about power struggles with young children. We will also be able to have our Super Special Saturday this year!!!! Angela Russ-Ayons will be at the Bryant Conference Center on August 28th and you won’t want to miss it! She will be combining
movement and learning (Body Shakes and Brain Waves; and Math, Motion and Connecting the thoughts) Lastly, this quarter, we will host Dr. Kenneth Wesson to talk about learning Science through Play on September 14th. Please make time to register for these special, Nationally recognized speakers. CDR has also added some new faces to our team. Anna Barlow comes to us as the new Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant, and can help assist licensed programs with social emotional learning, wellbeing, classroom management, challenging behaviors and promoting good mental health with teachers, staff, children and families. Call to schedule a consultation- it is a free service available to you! We also welcome Hillary Schwartz, who has worked within a local center as a teacher, and administrator, then moved to work with Childcare Resources in Birmingham as a trainer and consultant for Head Start/Early Head Start partnerships. We are so happy to have these two added to our versatile team! Let us know how we can continue to support you!
Enthusiastically,
April Kendrick, Ph.D
Director
Self-Care Summer!
One of the best ways to nurture positive social emotional development is to make sure we model it ourselves. Self-care is so important to be able to do this because too often if you do not focus on yourself enough you begin to show signs of stress, outbursts and burnout. Practicing self-care may look like rest and relaxation to some or keeping a daily journal for others. There really is no wrong way as long as it is healthy and feels good to you. Always remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup so practice filling your cup this summer! Contact me if you need help with children exhibiting challenging behaviors, social withdrawal, frequent emotional outbursts, and other concerning emotional or behavioral signs/symptoms (who are enrolled in state licensed daycare settings). This is a free support available to children, families, caregivers and daycare staff to support social-emotional development and to promote positive mental health in children ages birth to five and their caregivers

“Play and Science Together” Play relaxes the entire body-brain system, which makes learning easier for both children and adults. Play involves explorations, trial-and-error, discovering systems, making connections, which are all similar to what scientists do. Scientists apply the strategies they have found to be productive in their problem-solving endeavors and abandon the more fruitless ideas, just as children do when they are learning about the world around them. Join Dr. Wesson to learn how to connect play and science together!
Kenneth Wesson is a former higher education faculty member and administrator. He delivers
keynote addresses in San Jose, CA, on the neuroscience of learning for educational
organizations and institutions throughout the United States and overseas. His audiences range
from early childhood specialists to university-level educators. His research is frequently
published and referenced in Parents Magazine, HealthNet, and the journal Brain World.

Moving from “Discipline Thinking” to “Guidance Thinking” Conventional discipline too easily slides into punishment, using control to enforce obedience. Guidance is teaching for healthy emotional and social development, such as self-regulation, learning from mistakes, and problem solving. Participants will learn new ways to looking at and interpreting children’s behavior, moving from “challenging behavior” to “challenged children.” [email protected] **Registration Link** https://forms.gle/WZdw1bmSQxfd1dNM9 Maximum Participants: 25
