From our railway’s point of view it was not a very appropriate title, for, as we all know, it was the year that finally sounded the death knell of the ‘London Extension’. To all intents and purposes our line had ceased to exist (as far as the National Network was concerned.) But the title has taken on a very different significance with the recent announcement that Network Rail is now in partnership with us, and is in- tent upon speeding up the pace of our reunification plans, and will concentrate on the reinstatement of the bridge over the MML at Loughborough Midland sta- tion. This will help us to realise a long cherished dream, to become a unique eighteen mile Inter-City heritage main- line steam railway, and which was the dream of our founder members. This recent event once again was a resounding success, here at your local station on the GCR, resulting in record ticket sales over the two days, and a very healthy result from the efforts of the buffet staff. The first day, Fri. saw our station be- sieged by several hundred “Evacuees”from local primary schools, with their gas mask boxes around their necks, all eager for the train to arrive and take them further along the line. On arriving back at our station an hour or two later, the adults accompanying them told us that their little charges had thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were sorry that it was all over. The same can be said with regard to the railway as a whole, with many commen- dations from those who attended the event.
