“What you have is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God.” “What I do with what God

has given me” – those words are a good working

definition of stewardship. The word “steward”

actually means “manager.” In the Bible, a steward is

someone who manages a household for an

owner, often while the owner is gone.

My stewardship, then, is my

management of what God in

heaven has given to me on earth.

At times human beings behave as

though they were engaged in a real-life game

of Monopoly. They act as though the winner

of this life is the one who dies with the

biggest fistful of money.

When it comes right down to it, the

pride of the rich and the jealousy of the poor are a bit

silly. Such individuals are, as one man put it, like two

fleas arguing over who owns the dog. Those who live

as though life were a game of Monopoly are acting

foolishly. As a matter of fact, we do not really own

the things we claim to own. The God who created all

things is and remains the real OWNER of everything!

We are simply stewards or managers of these

things until the real owner returns, at which time we

will give an account of our stewardship. So, we want

to use these things wisely now to his glory, for the spread of his kingdom, and that those still in the

darkness of unbelief might come to

know the Savior and spend eternity

with him in heaven.

That is not because we are forced to, or threatened if

we don’t. It’s because, well, you know: “the grace of our

Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your

sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty

might become rich.” The Son of God left his

throne in heaven to suffer death for our

sake. By becoming poor, Jesus makes us

rich with forgiveness, peace with God,

a prepared place by his side, an

endless reunion with all believers,

and eternal inheritance. These are

“TRUE RICHES!” By God’s grace, they are yours!

Perhaps you know and can imagine what a

50th anniversary of a high school graduating

class might be like. Friends who have

graduated from high school at the age of 18

now meet again at age 68. At the reunion, friends and acquaintances repeatedly ask, “What have you been

doing since I last saw you?”

Each one of us will hear a similar question on

Judgment Day. God will ask us, “Steward, what have you

done with your life? What did you do with what I gave

you?”

May you stand before God’s judgment throne,

righteous and pure because of the cleansing blood of

your Savior. And may you have used your time, talents

and treasures wisely, so that many others are there to

welcome you someday into God’s heaven. Thank you so

much for being shrewd managers of your all you have

right now to gain friends for eternity!

“I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when

it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Luke 16:9
