DearStudentAthletesandParents/Guardians,
Asanotherschoolyearbegins,IwouldliketowelcomeyouonbehalfoftheRHSAthleticDepartment.Iwanttowishyoua
successfulschoolyear.Wehopeyoutakeadvantageofthisgreatopportunitytolearnandgrowacademically.Iwish,too,thatyou
experiencetherenewalandmakingoffriendships.Also,itisourgoalthatyouexperiencesuccessintheathleticprogramsinwhich
youchoosetoparticipate.Remember,athleticsisnotaboutjustwinning,athleticsisanopportunitytolearnandtogrowin
importantways.
AsamemberofoneormoreoftheathleticprogramsatRavennaHighSchool,youtakeonanimportantrole.Youbecomeavery
visiblerepresentativeofRavennaHighSchoolandofthecommunityofRavenna.Youbecomearepresentativeofthepride,
excellenceandtraditionthathasbecomeatrademarkofRavennaHighSchool’sathleticprograms.Alongwithathletesattheother
sevenschoolsintheWestMichiganConference,yourepresentoneofthemostrecognizedathleticconferencesintheStateof
Michigan.Ichallengeyoutocontinuetobuildonthetraditionofpride,excellenceandsportsmanshipatRavennaHighSchooland
intheWestMichiganConference.
Parentsandguardians,youarenotoneoftheathletesdirectlyparticipatingononeofourathleticteams;nevertheless,youplaya
significantroleinourathleticprogram,too.Icountonyoutoencourageyourson/daughtertomakeresponsiblechoicesand
decisionsinallareasoftheirlives.Icountonyoutochallengeyourson/daughterintheirathleticachievements.Icountonyouto
giveyourchild’scoacheswhattheyneedtofocusontheircoachingresponsibilities.Icountonyoutobethebestfan
representativesofRavennaHighSchool.Allinall,Iwantyouonourteam.
ThisManualisintendedtoserveasasummaryofwhatisnecessarytoknowasanathleteandasparentsofathletes.Someofthe
informationisbasedonMHSAArequirementsandexpectationsandsomeofthehandbookmaybebasedonagreementsand
decisionsmadeattheconferencelevel.MuchofthemanualisbasedonagreementsanddecisionsmadebytheRavennaHigh
Schoolboard,administrationandstaff.Iaskallofyoutoreadthemanualcarefully.Yourfamiliaritywiththisdocumentwillmake
yourexperiencewithathleticsmoresuccessfulandenjoyable.Remember,thatathleticsisaprivilegeandIexpecteveryone
associatedwiththeathleticprogramtotreatthisprivilegewithpride,disciplineandintegrity.

A. MissionStatement

TheroleofathleticsintheRavennaPublicSchoolsistoprovideaneducationalexperienceintheframeworkof
competitiveinterscholasticathletics.Byfocusingoneducationaloutcomesandstudentlearning,athletics
providestudentathletesopportunitiesforphysical,emotional,socialandintellectualgrowth.
B.RavennaPublicSchoolsAthleticPhilosophy
TheRavennaAthleticDepartment,RavennaHighSchoolandRavennaPublicSchoolDistrictbelievethatathletic
programsareafundamentalpartoftheeducationalprocessandplayanintegralpartinthedevelopmentofthe
life-longlearner.Theseprogramsserveasextensionsoftheclassroom,andpromotethehands-onlearning
processtostudentsinareassuchaspride,characterdevelopment,teamwork,respect,goodsportsmanship,
self-discipline,andhonesty.Webelievethatinterscholasticathleticsisaprivilege.Thisprivilegemustbe
earnedbystudentathletesthroughacademicresponsibility,properstudentbehaviorandadheringtoathletic
rules.Westrivetohelpeverystudentathletetohaveapositiveexperienceandtolearnthemanylifelessons
thatparticipationininterscholasticathleticscanteach.Wealsounderstandthatthesuccessofaprogramis
measuredbymorethanjustthewin/losscolumn.Itisbyguidingstudentathletestomatureasfunctioning,
committedmembersofacommunityandtobethebestthattheycanbeinawaythatthevaluesofthis
communityoflearnerswillbebestserved.Intheend,ourhopeisthatourathleticprogramisinstrumentalin
helpingeverystudentathletebecomeleadersinallareasoftheirlives.
C. CoreBeliefs
1. Athleticparticipationisaprivilege,notaright.Participationisearnedthroughresponsiblemembership
intheschoolcommunity.
2. Participationispermittedtostudentswhofirstofalldemonstratethattheirfirstresponsibilityis
academicachievement.Secondly,participationisforthosestudentathleteswhohavetheskills,
attitudes,andwillingnesstoworkhardtoimprovethemselvesandtheirteammates.
3. Athletesarestudentsfirst.Coachesareeducatorsfirst.
4. Thecoachingstaff,athletes,administrators,schoolemployees,parents,andspectatorsshouldalways
actinamannerthatwillenhancethepositiveimageoftheteam,school,andcommunity.
5. Athletesareencouragedtoparticipateinmorethanonesportthroughouttheyear.Specializationat
thehighschoollevelisnotnecessaryorbeneficialinthelongrun.
6. Participationininterscholasticcompetitionmustbeearned!Workethic,ability,academicstanding,and
behaviorareallvitalfactorsthatwillplayarole.
7. Thegoalsoftheteammustcomebeforetheneedsoftheindividual.
8. Athleticparticipationisintendedtobenefitallstudentathletesbyteachingfundamentals,strategiesand
behaviorsthatwillenableteamsandathletestobesuccessfulonandofftheplayingsurface.
9. Highschoolparticipationisnotintendedtobeanavenueforcollegescholarshipsorprofessional
contracts.Ifthoseopportunitiesbecomeavailable,thecoachesandschoolwillassistastheyareable.
10. Promotingthesafetyandwell-beingofourstudentathletescomesfirstandforemostinallareasof
athletics.Safeguardswillbeinplaceatalltimestoensureourstudentsperforminasafeenvironment.
D. RavennaBoardofEducation/ProgramObjectives

Anyprogrammusthaveobjectivestobemeaningful.Theobjectivesfortheathleticdepartmentarebasicand
areapplicableforalllevels.Individualprogramsmayhaveotherobjectives,buttheyshouldbeconsistentwith
thephilosophystatedhereandtheeducationalobjectivesofRavennaPublicSchoolsandtheRavennaBoardof
Education.EachathleticprogramatRavennaHighSchoolmuststriveto:
1. Promotecharactereducation(PRIDE),sportsmanship,ethicalandsociallyresponsiblebehaviors,and
teamwork.
2. Strengthenthebondandimportancebetweenathleticsandacademics
3. Promotethevalueoflifelessonslearnedinathleticsforourstudentsandfortheschoolitself.
4. Provideallstudentathleteswiththebestteachingandcoachingpersonnelpossible.
5. Provideallstudentathleteswiththebestfacilitiesandequipmentpossible.
6. Provideanopportunityforallstudentathletestoparticipateinthebestinterscholasticprograms
possible.
7. Provideallstudentathletesanopportunitytogrowphysically,emotionally,socially,andintellectually
throughparticipationinathleticprograms.Ourgoalistohelpdeveloplifelongleaders.
II.CONFERENCEMEMBERSHIPANDCLEARINGHOUSEINFORMATION
A.ConferenceAffiliation
RavennaPublicSchoolsisamemberoftheMichiganHighSchoolAthleticAssociation(MHSAA)andtheWest
MichiganConference(WMC).TheWMCiscomprisedofeight(8)memberschools:

Montague NorthMuskegon
Oakridge Ravenna
Shelby Whitehall
B. NCAAClearinghouse
Manygraduatingathleteswhowishtocompete(orinlinetoreceiveathleticscholarships)arediscoveringthat
theywillbeacademicallyineligibletoparticipateinDivisionIandIIcollegesanduniversitiesbecausetheyhave
failedtomeettheacademicstandardssetbytheNCAAInitialEligibilityClearinghouse.Ifyouseeanypossibility
thatyourson/daughtermightwanttoparticipateincollegiateathletics,pleasecheckwiththecounselingoffice
forcurrentNCAAClearinghouseinformation,orchecktheirwebsiteatwww.eligibilitycenter.org.
III. MHSAABASICELIGIBILITYREQUIREMENTS
MichiganHighSchoolAthleticAssociation(MHSAA)eligibilityrulesforstudentathletes.(Thesearecondensed
statementsofthecompleteregulationsoneligibility).
1.Enrollment-HavebeenenrolledinaseniorhighschoolbyMondayofthefourth(4th)weekofthepresentsemester.

2.Age-Belessthannineteen(19)yearsofageattimeofcontestunlessnineteenth(19th)birthdayoccursonorafter
September1ofacurrentschoolyear,inwhichcasestudentiseligibleforbalanceofthatschoolyearinallsports.Any
studentbornbeforeSeptember1,2001,isineligibleforinterscholasticathleticsinMichigan.
3.PhysicalExaminations-Havepassedacurrentphysicalexamination(afterApril15).Recordmustbeonfilewiththe
athleticdepartmentoffice.
4.SemesterofEnrollment-Nothavebeenenrolledformorethaneight(8)semestersingradesninetotwelve(9-12),
inclusive.Seventhandeighth(7and8)semestersmustbeconsecutive.Threeweeksenrollmentorparticipationinone
(1)ormoreathleticcontestsconstitutesasemesterofenrollment.
5.SemesterofCompetition-Havenomorethanfour(4)firstandfour(4)secondsemesterseasonsofcompetitionina
sportinafour(4)yearhighschool,includingpresentseason.Whentwoseasonsleadingtoastatechampionshiporthe
samesportareoffered,anathletemayparticipateinonlyone.
6.UndergraduateStanding-Notbeahighschoolgraduate.
7.PreviousSemesterRecord-Havereceivedatleasttwenty(20)credithoursforworktakenduringtheprevious
semesterofenrollment.(Inotherwords,youmusthaveearned6credits.)
8.CurrentSemesterRecord-Academiceligibilitychecksofnotmorethantenweeksarerequired.Ifastudentisnot
passingatleasttwo-thirds(2/3)oftheircredithourswhenchecked,thatstudentisineligibleforcompetitionuntilthe
nextcheck,butnotlessthanforthenextMondaythroughSunday.Ifthenexteligibilitycheckrevealsthestudentisstill
notpassingatleasttwo-thirds(2/3)credithours,thatstudentisineligibleforcompetitionfornotlessthanthenext
MondaythroughSunday,andsoonuntilthestudentispassingtwo-thirds(2/3)credithoursfromthestartofthe
semesterthroughthemostrecenteligibilitycheck.
9.Transfers-Generally,astudentwhotransfersintoanewschooldistrictisineligibleforeachsporttheyparticipated
inattheirformerschoolunlessthestudentqualifiesunderoneormorespecificexceptions.Transferstudentsmust
contacttheathleticofficetorequestthatanEducationTransferformbecompleted.
10.UndueInfluence-Theuseofundueinfluenceforathleticpurposesshallcauseanathletetobecomeineligiblefora
minimumofone(1)semesterandamaximumofone(1)year.
11.Awards-Mustnothaveacceptedanyawardormerchandiseexceeding$25.00invalueforathleticperformance.
Athletesacceptingmemberships,privileges,services,negotiablecertificatesormoneyareinviolation.
12.AmateurPractices-Nothaveacceptedmoney,merchandise,memberships,privileges,servicesorothervaluable
considerationforparticipatinginanyformofathletics,sportsorgames,orforofficiatinginterscholasticathletics
contests,orhavesignedaprofessionalbaseballcontract.(Reinstatementwillnotbeconsideredforone(1)year).
13.LimitedTeamMembership-Astudentwho,afterpracticingwithorparticipatinginanathleticcontestor
scrimmageasamemberofahighschoolathleticteam,participatesinanyathleticcompetitionnotsponsoredbyhisor
herschoolinthesamesportduringthesameseason,shallbecomeineligibleforaminimumofthenextthree(3)daysof
competitionandmaximumofremainderofthatseasoninthatschoolyear.
14.All-StarCompetition–StudentsshallnotcompeteatanytimeinanysportunderMHSAAjurisdictioninall-star
contestsornationalchampionships,regardlessofthemethodofselection.Participationinsuchacontestshallcause
thatstudenttobecomeineligibleforamaximumperiodofoneyearofschoolenrollment.

IV. SCHOOLELIGIBILITYREQUIREMENTS
A. AcademicRequirements–RavennaHighSchoolstudentathletes
Weeklyeligibilitycheckswillbemadetochecktheacademicstandingofstudentathletes.Inordertomaintain
eligibility,astudentmaynotbefailingtwo(2)ormoreclassesatanytime.Ifataweeklycheckastudentathleteis
failingtwo(2)ormoreclasses,theywillbegivenawarning.Ifatthenextweeklyeligibilitycheckthestudentathlete
isstillfailingtwo(2)ormoreclasses,theywillbeineligibleforthenextweekofcompetition,beginningwithMonday
andcontinuingthroughSaturday.Thestudentwillcontinuetobeineligibleuntiltheyarefailinglessthantwo(2)
classes.
Studentathleteswhoareineligiblemaycompleteaweeklyprogressreportsheetthatwillbesignedbyan
administratorandaparent/guardian.Studentathleteswhoareineligiblemaybeaskedtocompletestudiesduring
teampracticetime,andstudentathleteswithmultipleweeksofineligibilitymaybeaskedtoleavetheteam.
NOTE:Astudentmustbegivenawarningtheweekprecedinganineligibilityratingistobegiven.Iftheteacher
doesnotreportagradefortheweek,itwillbeassumedthatthestudentathleteisinproperacademicstanding.
B. SemesterAcademicPolicy
Alongwiththeweeklyeligibilitychecks,therewillbeasemestereligibilitypolicy.Anystudentfailingtwo(2)or
moreclassespersemesterwillbeineligibleforthefollowingsemester.
C. AttendanceatSchool
Anathletemustattendacompleteschooldayinordertoparticipateinpracticeoraninterscholasticathleticcontest
thatday.PLEASENOTE--Athleteswhosignthemselvesoutduringanypartoftheday,orathletesthatleavefor
anyreason(includingtogetajerseyfromhome)willbeineligibleforthatday.Theonlyexceptionsnormally
grantedareiftheathleteispre-excusedbytheofficeforanappointment,funeral,legalmatter,collegevisitation,
school-requiredactivity,orbyadministrativeapproval.Amedicalreleasewillberequiredformedical
appointments.Otherabsencesmayqualifyforanexceptiontotheattendanceruleuponappealtotheathletic
director.Anystudentathletewhoisonsuspensionfromschoolattendance(OSS)maynotpractice,participate,or
attendinterscholasticcompetitionsduringthetimeinwhichthestudentathleteisservingthesuspension.Fora
suspensionthatendsonFriday,astudentathletemaynotparticipateonSaturday.Ifthestudentis10ormore
minuteslateforschooltheyareconsideredabsentandtheconsequencesareasfollows:1stoffensetheathletewill
haveameetingwiththeathleticdirectorandthecoachwillbenotified;2ndoffensewillbesuspensionfromthe
gameorpractice,whicheverishappeningthedaytheoffenseoccurred.
Iftheabsenceisoverlookedandtheathleteparticipates,he/shewillberequiredtomissthenextscheduled
contest/practice.Foryourprotection,itisrecommendedthatabsencesofanylengthbereportedtotheathletic
officeforreview.
V. RULEVIOLATIONS
A.SuspensionsfromAthletics
TheathletictrainingrulesupheldbyRavennaPublicSchoolsrequirethestudent-athletetoadheretotheprinciplesof
responsiblebehaviorthroughathleticsandthatparticipationintheathleticprogramisaprivilege,notaright.Violation
ofthetrainingrulesdoesresultinapenaltythatrestrictsthestudentfromeligibility.
Allsuspensionsarebasedonapercentageoftheseasoninwhichthestudentisparticipating.Ifthestudentisnot
participatinginasportatthetimeoftheviolation,thesuspensionwillbeassessedduringthenextseasoninwhichthe

studentparticipates.Allstudentsmustcompletetheseasoningoodstandingforasuspensiontobecounted.Astudent
whoquitsorisremovedfromateamwillforfeitanysuspensionsservedduringtheseasonofplayandberequiredto
servethesuspensionduringthenextseasoninwhichthestudentparticipates.
Allsuspensionswillbecalculatedbasedonthenumberofregularseasoneventdates.Sportingeventdatesthatconsist
ofmultiplecontests(i.e.,volleyballtournamentorbaseballdoubleheader)willbeconsideredasasingleeventdate.
Post-seasoneventdateswillnotbeincludedintheformulationfordeterminingthelengthofsuspensions.However,
anystudentwhosesuspensionforviolationsoftheathletictrainingrulescoincideswithanypost-seasonplaywillbe
suspendedfromthepost-seasonplayaswell.
Astudentfoundinviolationofmultipleoffenseslistedbelowwillservetheappropriatepenaltiesforeachviolation
individually,notsimultaneously.
B.TrainingRules
TheRavennaSchoolBoardhasauthorizedadministratorstoinvestigateincidentsthatmayinvolvethebreakingof
athletictrainingrules.Eachstudent-athleteatRavennaSeniorHighSchoolmustcomplywithallathletictrainingrulesto
remaineligibletoparticipateasamemberofanyofourinterscholasticteams.Theathletictrainingrulesareasfollows:
1. Tobacco/E-Cigarette Offenses -Students shall not use or possess tobacco. A student proven to be in violation of this training rule shall be subject to the following penalties:
1stoffense-Suspensionfrom50%ofallscheduledathleticeventsfortheseasoninwhichthestudentis
participating.Ifthestudentisnotcurrentlyparticipatinginanathleticsport,thepenaltywillbeserved
commencingwiththenextsportinwhichthestudentparticipates.Shouldthesuspensionexceedthe
remaininglengthofthecurrentsports-season,theremainingpercentagewillbeservedduringthenext
seasoninwhichthestudentparticipates.
2ndoffense-Suspensionfrom100%ofallscheduledathleticeventsfortheseasoninwhichthestudent
isparticipating.Ifthestudentisnotcurrentlyparticipatinginanathleticsport,thepenaltywillbe
servedcommencingwiththenextsportinwhichthestudentparticipates.Shouldthesuspension
exceedtheremaininglengthofthecurrentsports-season,theremainingpercentagewillbeserved
duringthenextseasoninwhichthestudentparticipates.
3rdoffense-SuspensionfromparticipationinanyRavennaPublicSchoolsponsoredsportforthe
remainderofhis/hercareer.
2.Drug,Alcohol,Steroid,orPerformanceEnhancingDrugOffense-Studentsshallnotuseorpossessalcohol,
controlledsubstances,steroids,orlook-a-likes.Ifitisevidentthatastudenthasviolatedtheathletic
trainingrulesinvolvingalcoholand/ordrugs,thestudentshallbesubjecttothefollowingpenalties:
1stoffense-Suspensionfrom50%ofallscheduledathleticeventsfortheseasoninwhichthestudentis
participating.Ifthestudentisnotcurrentlyparticipatinginanathleticsport,thepenaltywillbeserved
commencingwiththenextsportinwhichthestudentparticipates.Shouldthesuspensionexceedthe
remaininglengthofthecurrentsports-season,theremainingpercentagewillbeservedduringthenext
seasoninwhichthestudentparticipates.
ThestudentmustsubmittoasubstanceabuseassessmentprovidedbyalicensedprovideracceptabletoRavenna
PublicSchoolsattheexpenseofthestudentandhis/herparent/guardian.Thestudentmustfollowthroughonthe
recommendationsprovidedbythesubstanceabuseassessment,attheexpenseofthestudentandhis/her
parent/guardian.Thestudentmaycontinuetoactivelyparticipateinpracticesessionsatthediscretionofthe
coachesandadministrators.Shouldtherecommendationsprovidedbyassessmentrequireatime-linefor

athleticsuntilsuchtimeastheschoolissatisfiedthatthestudenthassuccessfullyre-enrolledintreatment.
2ndoffense-Suspensionfrom100%ofallscheduledathleticeventsfortheseasoninwhichthestudent
isparticipating.Ifthestudentisnotcurrentlyparticipatinginanathleticsport,thepenaltywillbe
servedcommencingwiththenextsportinwhichthestudentparticipates.Shouldthesuspension
exceedtheremaininglengthofthecurrentsports-season,theremainingpercentagewillbeserved
duringthenextseasoninwhichthestudentparticipates.Thestudentmustsubmittoasubstanceabuse
assessmentprovidedbyalicensedprovideracceptabletoRavennaPublicSchoolsattheexpenseofthe
studentandhis/herparent/guardian.
Thestudentmustfollowthroughontherecommendationsprovidedbythesubstanceabuseassessmentattheexpense
ofthestudentandhis/herparent/guardian.Thestudentmaycontinuetoactivelyparticipateinpracticesessionsatthe
discretionofthecoachesandadministrators.Shouldtherecommendationsprovidedbyassessmentrequireatime-line
forcompletionwhichexceeds100%ofseason@penalty,thestudentwillbeallowedtobereinstatedaslongasprogress
reportsindicatesatisfactoryprogressisbeingobserved.
Shouldthestudentelecttodeclinetherecommendationsprovidedbytheassessmentorshouldthestudentdiscontinue
anyrehabilitationtreatmentrecommendedbytheassessment,thestudentwillloseparticipationrightsinRavenna
athleticsuntilsuchtimeastheschoolissatisfiedthatthestudenthassuccessfullyre-enrolledintreatment.

C.DurationofTrainingRules.
TheAthletictrainingrulesapplytwelve(12)monthsoftheyear,twenty-four(24)hoursperday,onandoffschool
property.ARavennastudent-athleteshallabidebytheeligibilityrulesandathletictrainingrulesbeginningthefirstday
ofofficialpracticeinasport,orthefirstdayofenrollmentatRavennaPublicSchoolsingrades9-12.
VI. APPEALSOFSUSPENSIONSFROMATHLETICS
AppealsProcess–Anathletewhohasbeensuspendedordismissedforathletictrainingruleinfractionsis
entitledtoahearing.Thefollowingprocedureshallbefollowed:
1. Theathletemustgivewrittennoticetothehighschoolprincipalwithinthreedaysofthesuspensionstating
his/herdesireforahearingwiththeprincipal.
2. Theparentorguardianandlegalcounselmaybepresentatthemeeting.
3. Theathleteshallbegivenanopportunitytopresenthis/hercaseregardingthesuspension.He/Sheshallbe
allowedtoofferallevidencenecessarytohis/herdefense.
4. Thehearingshallbeconductedbythehighschoolprincipal.Theprincipalshallmakehis/herdecisionbased
upontheevidencepresentedatthehearing.
5. ThedecisionoftheprincipalmaybeappealedtothesuperintendentandsubsequentlytotheRavennaBoardof
Education.
6. Theappealsprocessshalltakenolongerthanoneweekfollowingthedatewrittennotificationisreceivedbythe
principal.Nopunishmentsshallbecarriedoutduringtheappealsprocess.

VII. POLICIES,REQUIREMENTS,EXPECTATIONS
A. AfterGameProcedures
Thefollowingprocedureswillbeadheredtoaftertheconclusionofeachcontest:
1. Noteammembershouldlingerbehindtotalkissueswithanyone.
2. ParentsareNOTtoconferencewithcoachesaftergames.Thecoach/schoolcanbecontactedatalatertime
andameetingcanbescheduled.
3. Coachesmustprovidesupervisionfortheirteamatalltimes.
4. Coachesshallcheckforanyinjuriesandadvisethetrainerortakeappropriateaction
B. Attendanceatpractice
Notificationoffirstdayofpractice/try-outs:Athletesandparentsmusthaveanopportunitytobeinformedof
thefirstdayofpractice/try-outsthroughannouncementtwoweekspriortothefirstdayofpractice/try-outs.Anathleteisexpectedtobeatallpracticesontime.Ifanathletemissespracticewithoutnotifyingthecoachprior
topractice,itwillberegardedasanabsence.Generally,absenceswillbehandledinamannersimilartothe
followingguidelines:
FirstAbsence: Theathletemayberemovedfromthestartingline-uporbenchedforsome
part,butnotall,ofthenextcontest.
SecondAbsence: Theathletemaybebenchedforonefullgameatthenextcontest.
ThirdAbsence: Theathletemaybebenchedfor10%oftheremainingcontests.
FourthAbsence: Theathletemayberemovedfromtheteamforuptotheremainderofthe
season.
NOTE:Eachcoachmayformulateandenforcemorestringentrules.
ThefirstofficialdayofpracticeforeachsportisdeterminedbytheMHSAA,thecoachofthesportandthe
athleticdirector.Anathletemustattendthefirstorganizeddayofpracticeforthatsportwithaphysicalonfile.
Ifanathleteisnotallowedtoparticipateafterthefirstdayofpractice,he/shemustmakeupallregularpractice
daysmissedorbesubjecttoateampenalty.Exceptionstothisrulearestudentswhotransferintothedistrict.
Allotherexceptionsmustbeclearedthroughtheathleticdirector.
C. BusTransportation
Whenschooltransportationisprovided,allteammembersarerequiredtoridethebustoandfromthecontest
tobeeligibleforparticipation.Wheneveranathleteplanstonotridethebus,theathletemustprovidethe
coachwithatransportationreleaseformsignedbytheathlete’sparents/guardiansandaschooladministrator.
Iftheathletefailstosubmitatransportationform,theywillbepenalized.Incaseanemergencyorextenuating
circumstancecausesanathletetonotbeabletorideschooltransportation,anotesignedbythe
parents/guardiansmustbegiventotheAthleticDirectorthedaybeforethecontest.Copiesofthisformmaybe
foundontheschoolwebsite.Whennobustransportationisprovidedafterathleticcontests,athletesmustsign
outwiththeircoach.Ifanathletefailstosignoutwiththeircoach,theywillreceiveawarningthefirsttime
withthepossibilityofineligibilityforfutureviolations.

D. CleanlinessandAppearance
Astheappearanceofanathletecanbringcreditordiscredittoaschool,allRavennaathletesareencouragedto
maintainpersonalcleanliness,andtakeprideinpersonalgroomingwhenwearingschoolissuedgameuniforms
andapparel.
E. CommunicationwithCoaches/24-hourpolicy
Goodcommunicationisessentialtoaqualityathleticprogram.Coachesaretolayoutteamexpectations,rules,
andgoalsduringaparentmeetingatthebeginningoftheseason.Ifthereisamisunderstandingduringthe
seasonitisexpectedthatthefollowingprocedureswillbefollowed.
1.Studentathleteandcoachresolvesituation.
2.Studentathlete,parent,andcoachmeettoresolvesituation.
3.Studentathlete,parent,coach,andathleticdirectormeettoresolvethesituation.
4.Studentathlete,parentcoach,athleticdirector,andprincipalresolvethesituation.
Ifthereisasituationthatarisesduringacontestitisexpectedthatparentswillwait24hoursaftertheincident
todiscussitwiththecoach.Thisallowsforpost-gameemotionstocool,andwillmakeforamoreproductive
meeting.
F. DayswithNoSchool
Thefollowingguidelineswillbeadheredtointheeventschooliscanceledduetoinclementweather:
1.Nopracticewillbeheldbefore1:00pm.Thiswillallowforsnowremovaltooccurandbadconditionsto
potentiallyimprove.
2.Allpracticesareoptionalandnoconsequenceswillbeassessedforanabsence.
3.Duetoconflictswithparent’sabilitytotransportkidsatthemiddleschoollevel,allmiddleschoolgamesand
practiceswillbecanceledfortheentiretyoftheday.
Ifschooliscanceledonadaywhentherearescheduledathleticcontestsintheevening,thestatusofthose
eventswillbehandledonanindividualbasisafterconsultingwiththeadministrationoftheschoolsinvolved.
G. DualTeamMembership
Anystudentathletewhowishestoparticipatein2sportsinthesameseasonmustcompletearequestfromthe
athleticoffice.Requestformsareavailableontheschool’sathleticwebpageorintheathleticoffice.Whenthe
requestformisreceived,theAthleticDirectorwillarrangethenecessaryconferencewiththecoachesinvolved
todetermineifdualteammembershipispossible.Theathletepresentingtherequestmayalsobeaskedto
attendtheconference.
H. Equipment
EquipmentwillbeissuedasspecifiedbytheheadcoachandinaccordancetoMichiganHighSchoolAthletic
Association.Allathletesareresponsibleforequipmentissuedtothemandareexpectedtotakegoodcareof
thatequipment.Failuretoreturnalloftheequipmentissuedmayresultintheiraward(s)beingheldornot
beingallowedtoparticipateinthenextsport.Allequipmentnotreturnedwithin14daysofthecollectiondate
willbebilledtotheathlete.NOTEStudentswillbebilledforthecostofnewequipment;thiscoulddifferfrom
thevalueofequipmentnothandedin.
I. Fundraisers/FundsSolicitations
Allfundraisersorsolicitationsoffundsfrombusinessesorindividualsrequiresadministrativeapproval.

J. GeneralConduct
Goodconductisexpectedofathletes,inseasonoroutofseason,intheirrelationshipwithteachers,classmates,
opponents,andadults.Therefore,conductconsideredunbecomingofanathleteanddeemeddetrimentalto
theteam,school,orcommunity,isaviolationoftheAthleticCodeofConductandtheathleticdirectorand
principalwilldeterminethepenalty.
K. Hazing
Hazinginallformsisprohibited.Thisincludesconspiringtohaze,beingaparticipantinahazingincident,
engaginginhazing,orcommittinganyactthatinjures,degrades,ordisgracesanyfellowstudent.Hazing
includesbothphysicalactsandverbalabuse.
“Hazingisanyactcommittedagainstastudentwhoistryingtojoinagroupthatishumiliating,demeaningor
endangersthestudent’shealthandsafety.Itcanoccurregardlessofconsentorwillingnesstoparticipate.If
youchoosenottotakepartbutknewwhatwasgoingon,youarepartoftheproblem.It’scalledpassive
participation.Eventhecreationofanenvironmentthatpromotesorallowshazingcanbeconsideredhazing.”
MichiganLaw:P.A.111andP.A.112of2004prohibitandpenalizehazingintheStateofMichigan.Hazingis
definedasanintentional,knowingorrecklessactbyapersonwhoactedaloneorwithothersthatwasdirected
againstanindividualandthatpersonkneworshouldhaveknownwouldendangerthephysicalhealthorsafety
oftheindividual,andthatwasdoneforthepurposeofaffiliationwith,participationin,ormaintaining
membershipinanyorganization.
Hazingviolationsaccordingtothelaw:
• Ifphysicalinjury,thepersonisguiltyofmisdemeanorandcanbejailedandfined.
• Ifimpairmentofbodilyfunction,thepersonisguiltyoffelonyandcanbesenttoprison(5years)
andfined($2,500.00).
• Ifdeathoccurs,thepersonisguiltyoffelonyandcanbesenttoprison(15years)andfined
($10,000.00).
Hazingisaseriousissue.Makeyourathleticexperiencefun,notdangerous.Considercommunityserviceasa
bondingexercisethatcanbringyourteamtogether.
L. HealthPhysicals
Eachathletemusthaveaphysicalexaminationonceayear(afterApril15)beforeparticipationinathletics.
M. InstructionstoStudentAthletesandParents
Keepingathletesandparentswellinformedencouragesanenvironmentthatgreatlyreducesthepotentialfor
injury.
A. Parentsandathletesmustacceptadegreeofriskfromparticipationinanysport.
B. Staffmembersmustcommunicatetoathletesthefullextentofandreasonforrulesofsafetyrelatedtotheir
chosensport.
C. Safetyregulationsappropriatetoeachsportshallbeestablishedforeveryactivity,andtaughttoall
participants.

D. Openlinesofcommunication(throughmeetings,writtencorrespondence,phonecalls,email,etc.)mustbe
establishedandmaintainedbetweenstaffandparentstomakethemawareofrisksandhowtoreduce
them.
E. Parentsshallbeinformedinwritingthatminimalhealthrequirementsforfullparticipationare:
1. Satisfactorymedicalhistoryandphysicalexamination.
2. Permissiontoparticipateformonfile.
3. Medicalinsurancecoverage,orsignedwaiverbyparentorguardianonfile.
4. Acclimationperiod.(7–10dayswithgraduallyincreasingactivity.)
5. Propernutritionandhydrationbeforeandduringtheseason.
6. Strictadherencetosafetyrulesandregulations.
7. Itisstronglyrecommendedthatstudentsparticipateinayear-roundconditioningprogram.
F. Provideinformationbetweenparents,athletes,andstaffregardingallinjuriesandillnesses.
N. Insurance
Allathletesshouldbecoveredbytheirfamilyinsuranceplanorawaiversignedbytheparentorguardian.All
RavennaathletesparticipatinginMHSAAsanctionedsportsthroughRavennaPublicSchools,arecoveredunder
theMHSAA’scatastrophicinsurancepolicy.DetailsofthispolicymaybefoundtheontheRavennaathleticweb
pageorMHSAA.com.Noathleteshallparticipateinanypracticeorcontestuntiltheinsurancerequirements
havebeenfulfilled.
O. Injuries/Illness
AllathletesmustsubmitanotetotheAthleticDirectorand/orAthleticTrainerfromtheirphysicianand/or
parent/guardiangivingthempermissiontoreturntoparticipationfollowinganinjuryorprolongedillness.
P. PreparationoftheStudentAthlete
Anathletethatismentally,emotionally,andphysicallyconditionedforanactivityislesssusceptibletoinjury.
Preparationrequirementsincludethefollowing:
1. AnMHSAApolicyapprovedinterscholasticphysicalexaminationisarequirementforparticipationin
anysport.
2. ARavennaInterscholasticpermissionform,signedbytheparent,isarequirementforparticipation
inanysport.
3. Priortoparticipation,eachHeadCoachmustbesatisfiedthateveryathleteismentally,emotionally,
andphysicallysuitedforthatparticularactivity.
4. Athleticpreparednessisaconcernthroughouttheseason.Athletesmustnotberequiredto
performbeyondtheirlevelofabilitywithregardtophysicalcondition,performancetechniques,or
levelofcompetition.
5. Adequatebodilyfluidsarecritical.Coachmustprovideanadequatewatersupplyatalltimes.
6. Returningtoathleticactivityafteraseriousinjuryorillnessrequiresawrittenconsentofthe
athlete’sphysician.Eventhen,thefinaldiscretionrestswiththeAthleticTrainerandAthletic
Director.Specialconcernsareheadinjuries,heatillness,diabetes,andcommunicablediseases
(mononucleosis,etc.)
Q. ProblemResolutionProtocol
Communicationisthemostvitalaspectofheadingoffpotentialproblems.Anyconcernastudent orparenthasmustalwaysbeaddressedbyfollowingthe“ExtraCurricularConflictResolutionProcess.”Thefirststepofthisis
tocontactthesource.Wheneverpossiblethestudentshouldinitiate,butwhethertheparentorthestudent
beginstheprocesstherearesomesuggestionsonhowtohandlethisconversation.

StudentContactingtheSource:Thestudentshouldtalkdirectlywiththecoach,inprivate,face-to-face,away
fromthepracticesiteorgamearena.Atelephonecallmaybenecessarytoarrangeanappointment.Email,

effectiveforcommunicatingfeelings,andconcerns.Bytheirnaturetheytendtodistancecoachesandathletes.
ParentContactingtheSource:Contactthecoachtotalkdirectly,inprivate,face-to-face,awayfromthepractice
siteorgamearea.Makinganappointment,sittingdownandlisteningtobothsidesisfarmoreproductivein
reachingamutuallysatisfyingresolution.Ourcoachesareexpectedandencouragedtomeetwithindividual
parentstodiscussconcernsthataffectthatparent’schild.Ourcoachesarenotexpectedtomeetwithgroupsof
parentstodiscussissuesofconcern.PleaseDONOTattempttoconfrontacoachbeforeorafterpracticeora
contest.Thesecanbeemotionaltimesforboththeparentandthecoach.OurcoachesareNOTexpectedto
endureyelling,verbalorphysicalabusefromparents.Makeanappointment.Helpteachyourchildtheskillsof
matureconflictresolution.
ResolutionProtocolSteps
Ifpatrons,parents,studentsoremployeeshaveconcernsthatneedtobeexpressed,inordertomaintain
continuityandbestresolveissuesofconcern,thefollowingdistrictprotocolistobefollowed:
1. Thefirststepistotaketheconcerntotheassistant/headcoachofthespecificsportatthatlevel.Itisthe
goaltoresolvetheissueatthislevel.Callthecoach/schooltomakeanappointment.
2. Ifthereisstillaconcern,itwillbetakentotheAthleticDirector.
3. Iftheconcernpersists,itwillbetakentotheBuildingPrincipal.
4. Iftheconcernstillhasnotbeenresolvedtothesatisfactionofallconcerned,thenitwillbetakentothe
Superintendent.
5. Iftheinterestedpartystillfeelstheconcernhasnotbeenproperlyresolved,thenhe/shemayappealtothe
BoardAthleticCommittee.TheBoardAthleticCommitteewillpresentthesituationtotheentireBoardat
thenextregularlyscheduledBoardmeetingwitharecommendation.TheentireBoardwillthenmakea
finaldecision.
R. QuittingaSport
Anathletewhoquitsasportfollowingthegraceperiodshallnotbeallowedtoparticipateinthatsportforthe
remainderoftheseasonorinanyothersportthatisbeingplayedduringthatseason.Theathleteshallalso
forfeitanyawardforthedroppedsportandtimeservedforsuspensions.Exceptionsmaybeallowedwith
agreementoftheathleticdirectorandcoachesinvolved.
Anathletehasuntiloneweekbeforethefirstgametodecidewhetherhe/shewishestostayoutforthatsport.
Ifanathletequitsasportduringthegraceperiod,he/shemustpracticetwofullweeksbeforehe/shewillbe
allowedtoparticipateinanotherregularcontestinasportbeingheldduringthesameseason.Anathletemay
notquitonesportduringthegraceperiodandjoinasecondsportunlessthecoachofthesecondsporthas
givenpermission.
S. Supervision
Supervisionofallactivitiesbytheassignedcoach,buildingathleticdirector,and/oradministratorisnecessaryto
reducetheriskofinjuryandassureproperhandlingofemergencysituations.Thefollowingguidelinesshouldbe
observed:
1. Propersupervisionrequiresimmediatephysicalpresenceofanauthorizedadultduringallperiodofactivity.
2. Emergencyoccurrencesrequirethesuspensionofallstudentactivityuntilpropersupervisionisprovided.
Primaryattentionmustbegiventotheinjuredathlete.

3. Uniquesituationsmustbecoveredbyasupervisionplanasdevelopedandauthorizedbythebuildingprincipal
forthesupervisionoflockerroomsandallotherfacilities.

AllschoolsandathleticprogramswillcomplywithMichiganHighSchoolAthleticAssociationsportsmanship

VIII. ADMINISTRATIVEPOLICIES
A. AthleticTrainingandFirstAid
RavennaHighSchoolhasaLicensedAthleticTraineronstaffthatwillbepresentfornearlyallpracticesand
homeevents.AthleticTrainersarenationallycertifiedandlicensedintheStateofMichigantopracticeathletic
training.Theyhaveeducationandexperienceinanumberoffacetsincludingbutnotlimitedtoorthopedic
evaluation,injuryprevention,rehabilitation,kinesiology,sportsperformance,concussionmanagement,firstaid,
andCPR.Theyarethefirst"lineofdefense"forathletesacrossthenation.Intheeventthatasignificantinjury
thatoccursduringacompetition,theAthleticTrainerwillevaluatetheinjury,treatasnecessary,and
communicatetothecoachandparent(s)asavailableif/whentheathletecanreturntoplay.Atthistime,the
AthleticTrainerwillrecommendaplanofactionbasedontheclinicalimpressionofthegiveninjury.Thisplanof
