Grace Lutheran Church A worshipping community of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
www.GraceLutheranChesapeake.org
May 2016 “Grace Greetings”
Mission Statement:
We are a community of believers in Christ called to be servants to all people.
Ask the Pastor Where did the Confession go?
No one actually put this question in
the box, but I have been asked enough
times individually that I wanted to address it
here, where everyone can hear/read my
answer.
First of all...don’t worry...it is not
permanent. The Confession & Forgiveness
will be back as a regular part of our Sunday
worship soon enough.
We do not include the Confession in
the “Gathering” section of the service in
the season of Easter for a combination of
two reasons. One—it is good to mix up the
order of worship from time to time, so that
we do not get bored, take things for
granted, or stop paying attention to what
we are actually saying. This is the same
reason we didn’t sing the “Hymn of Praise”
in the traditional service during Lent. Two—
we specifically forego the “C&F” during
Easter to emphasis the victory of the empty
tomb and the celebration that
accompanies it.
Remember, there is a component of
confession & pronouncement of forgiveness
in other parts of the service, but if you really
need to confess, we do have a rite for
individual confession, and my door is always
open. Keep those questions coming!
See the “Ask the Pastor” box in the Narthex.
From Pastor Leslie—Stir Up the Gift of the Holy Spirit… On Sunday, May 15th, four of our youth will affirm their faith and become confirmed
members of this congregation. During the service, they will profess their faith, affirm their
Baptism, hear the rest of us promise to support them in their life in Christ, and then receive a
blessing that God might stir up in them the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This is a joyous day for the whole of the congregation—the whole of the church!
After two years of study, they are prepared to confess and promise, as their parents and
Godparents did their Baptisms. They do not know everything about the church. They do not
understand everything about God. However, since it is God that makes the covenant
possible, they are prepared.
We will soon have four new “adult” brothers and sisters in Christ, who alongside, we
will continue in our life of Christ:
to live among God’s faithful people
to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper
to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed
to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,
and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth
Please mark your calendars and celebrate with us at the joint worship service at
10am on Sunday, May 15th and the meal that will follow.
God Bless,
Pastor Leslie

Grow with Grace and be with Christ,
Rick Pabst
Meet our new Nursery Attendant Hey my name is Jen Rockwell. I started
babysitting when I was 11 and have
worked in child care since. I have been
married for 2 1/2 years to my best friend
Brian. Bethany Solomon and I have known
each other ever since we were in the
same 5th grade class. I'm looking forward
to being a part of the Grace Lutheran
family. Introduce yourself when you see
me. I look forward to meeting you all.
From the President May is one of those months where it seems
like it going to be laid back and relaxing
and then you remember summer is almost
here and you need to start making plans
before school is out. But there are still many
things happening before summer gets here.
Check the schedule.
Everyone probably has noticed or heard
that our front sign got blown over in a
recent storm. We are currently getting
quotes for a new sign and have filed an
insurance claim. The good news is we are
in good shape financially to be able to get
a replacement. Once we have quotes and
clear plan I will call a Congregational
Meeting to present it to the congregation
for approval. The other more challenging
piece of the problem is the city zoning
ordinances for signs which would seem to
prevent us from putting up a sign as a mere
replacement. The rules have changed.
The issue is probably doable, but may take
longer than just hiring a contractor for a
sign. Again, once we have a clear plan
forward we will present to the
congregation.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
tell you that Council elected Dave Pritchard
as our new vice president. Thank you Dave
for volunteering.
Speaking of volunteering, we hired a
nursery attendant, but we need assistant
nursery attendants. This is an important
ministry which is vital if we are going to
attract, welcome and embrace young
families. Couples are welcome if you wish
tag team.
With Spring here, that means the growing
season is here. We need lawn mowers.
Please sign up for a week of your choice. If
you want to volunteer but are unsure, see
myself or Gary Galles for details.
Finally, Grace has many things going on

Pkwy, Chesapeake, Virginia 23320 )
Please RSVP on Facebook or to Junita Urps.
Confronting -isms—May 18 @ 6:30pm ”There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is
no longer slave or free, there is no longer
male and female; for all of you are one in
Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28, NRSV)
In Christ, what unites us is greater than
what divides us, but our society and daily
lives don’t always reflect this unity. Join us
as we work to acknowledge (as the first
step to overcoming) our prejudices and
“isms”. A potluck dinner will begin our time
together, and will be followed by personal
testimonies and small group sharing.
Sister-Sisters—May 21 @ 10am Ladies, are you ready to continue the tale
of the Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible that we
began in February? This time, we will focus
on Hagar. Please prepare by reading
Genesis 16 and Genesis 21. Feel free to
bring a friend. After all, we are all Sisters in
Christ!!

Meet the Mutual Ministry Committee
Members: Pastor Leslie, Rich Fraenkel,
Marlene Hubert, & Rebecca Headings
Affirming and strengthening the mission of
the congregation and the ministry of the
staff is the primary purpose of the Mutual
Ministry Committee. This is done not through
programs but through: listening and
clarifying, sharing and communicating,
reviewing and reflecting.
The Mutual Ministry committee is not an
Human Resources or complaint department,
but is a resource for Pastor Leslie (and by
extension the congregation) as we work
together to do God’s work with our hands.
The work of the church is bigger than the
work of the pastor, so we serve as a
sounding board for ideas, observations, and
perceptions as we continually strive to focus
on the mutuality of our mission, to be
servants to all God’s people.
From the Day School
If you have good thoughts…they will shine out of
your face like sunbeams and you will always look
lovely.
From Matilda by Ronald Dahl
We are most grateful to Almighty God for
bringing us safely through another school
year.
We lose two wonderful and valuable
teachers this year, Miss Carol and Miss
Katie. Miss Katie’s husband Mike is a
Marine and is being reassigned to Camp
Lejeune, NC. Miss Carol leaves us to better
care for the needs of her family. We will
miss them both and wish them good
health and many blessings.
We are currently looking for two qualified
teachers to take their places. Please
contact the church secretary for an
application.
Many, many thanks to Gayle Graham,
Ruthie Miles and Pam Twiddy for their
many volunteer hours. Thanks also to our
Room Moms: Victoria Anderson, Caitlin
Heffelfinger, Ashley Hoskins, Candice
Powell and Leslie Steddenbenz who have
labored on our behalf.
We salute the members of Grace Lutheran
Church who support our many endeavors.
Special thanks to Jody Miller, church
secretary, who takes us under her wing
each year and to Pastor Leslie for sharing her
love of Jesus and the Scriptures with us each
week.
Please remember to tell your relatives,
friends and neighbors about our preschool.
There are still openings for the Fall.
The preschool’s Flea Market is planned for
Saturday, May 14th from 8 AM to 2 PM. The
raindate is Saturday, May 28th. Please come
and support us. It’s not too late to sign up to
rent a space or to bring in a baked item.
The trip to Fun Forest is planned for Friday,
May 6th. Our closing program is scheduled
for Tuesday evening, May 24th and our
picnic will take place the following day.
