With the support of the other ExecuƟve members and the professional advice of Dr Alessandra Doolan, I have managed to establish valuable communicaƟon pathways with the following: Medicare Benets Schedule (MBS) Taskforce Department of Veteran Aairs (DVA) Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) CoaliƟon of NaƟonal Nursing and Midwifery OrganisaƟons (CoNNMO) Australian Nursing and Midwifery FederaƟon (ANMF) Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Australian Diabetes Educators AssociaƟon (ADEA) CredenƟaling for Nurses (c4n) Commonwealth Chief Nursing and Midwifery Ocer Federal/QLD Minister for Health All of these departments/organisaƟons have an important role in assisƟng AANSA in obtaining recogniƟon for the PNSA role by establishing an educaƟon pathway and a remuneraƟon pathway within the Australian Health Care System. The data collected from contribuƟng members on PNSA usage throughout Australia from the 1st January to the 31st December 2016 has now been collated. Toni Hains and myself are in the process of wriƟng an arƟcle with the results. The aim is to publish the ndings to assist AANSA in its upcoming MBS taskforce submission Review. I look forward to discussing the challenges of the past year and the expected challenges of the year to come at this years Conference. Professor David McGin Professor McGin graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School and subsequently interned and trained in General Surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane before going on to train in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Prince Charles Hospital. In 1982, Professor McGin went to the United States as a Fulbright Scholar and undertook a Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He joined the faculty at the University of Alabama, but returned to Australia in 1986 to work at The Prince Charles Hospital where he did adult and paediatric cardiac surgery and also set up the Queensland Heart Transplant Program. In 1992, Professor McGin returned to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. At UAB, his clinic duƟes included the full range of adult cardiac surgery, adult and paediatric heart transplantaƟon and adult lung transplantaƟon. He commenced a pulmonary endarterectomy program for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Professor McGin’s research interests at UAB were primarily outcomes analysis in cardiac surgery and transplantaƟon. Other areas of interest include homograŌ aorƟc valves and research into biomechanics and myocardial oxidaƟve stress associated with chronic mitral regurgitaƟon. Professor McGin returned to Australia to take up a posiƟon as Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Alfred Hospital in 2013. Adjunct Associate Professor Kim RyanCreden aled Mental Health NurseCEO, Australian College of Mental Health NursesAdjunct Associate Professor Ryan was the fi rst salaried Chief Execu ve Offi cer of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses, commencing in the posi on in 2004. The ACMHN is the peak professional mental health nursing organisa on and the recognised Creden aling body for mental health nurses in Australia. She is passionate about mental health and mental health nursing holding a more prominent posi on on health agendas at local, state, na onal and interna onal levels and believes this can only be achieved with a strong, united, professionShe is a Board member of the Mental Health Professionals Network (MHPN) and the Chair of Companion House – Assis ng Survivors of Torture and Trauma. She was awarded the posi on of Adjunct Associate Professor by Sydney University in 2009 in recogni on of her contribu on to the nursing profession. In December 2016 Kim was awarded the inaugural Australian Mental Health Prize by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Shabnam Ahmadi Creden alled Diabetes Educator and Surgical AssistantShabnam Ahmadi is a Creden alled Diabetes Educator, qualifi ed with a Master of Advanced Health Prac ce in Diabetes Educa on, Surgical Assistance and a Registered Nurse.Shabnam speaks and can consult in English, Dari, Azaragi, Persian and Urdu.I moved from Pakistan in 1999 and started my educa on and also a ended language school from Grade 6. I graduated from Year 12 in 2006 and obtained admission into Deakin University where I received a Bachelor of Nursing.In July 2014 I was accepted for my Master of Advanced Health Prac ce in Surgical Assis ng as well as Diabetes Educa on and Management for which I graduated in 2017.I became a Creden alled Diabetes Educator in November 2016.My mentors for my surgical skills were Mr Mansoor Mirkazemi, and Mr Steve Salerno.

In February 2017, under the supervision of Professor David McGiffi n, the Cardiothoracic Periopera ve Nurse Surgical Assistant (PNSA) role commenced at the Alfred Hospital. Specialising in cardiothoracic surgery, the current scope of the role is for PNSA’s to perform surgical care that meets the op mal standards across the three domains of preopera ve, intra-opera ve and postopera ve care. Charlo e and Michael are excited about the challenges this new role entails and are looking forward to seeing the progression of PNSA within the Australian public sector.

Michael HenwoodMichael Henwood graduated Swinburne TAFE as a Enrolled Nurse in 2006. Working as an agency nurse in Melbourne allowed him to experience a variety of health care se ngs before quickly realising that the opera ng room was for him. Joining Epworth Richmond’s busy opera ng unit, he decided to con nue his educa on and completed his registered nursing degree at Victoria University. A graduate year back at Epworth Richmond rounded off his ward and cathlab experience. In 2011, he joined the Alfred opera ng suite team to gain trauma experience in orthopaedics then specialised in plas cs, burns and faciomaxillary surgery. For the last two years he has volunteered with Interplast in Myanmar, training local nurses and suppor ng the team to perform complex reconstruc ve plas c surgery.

Charlo e Harris-NaveCharlo e Harris-Nave is a Cardiothoracic PNSA at the Alfred Hospital and is currently comple ng her Masters of Nursing (Periopera ve Care) at La Trobe University. Charlo e’s responsibili es as a PNSA include harves ng veins and arteries for coronary artery bypass gra surgery, surgical fi rst assis ng and assis ng in the preopera ve and postopera ve clinic. Prior to joining the Alfred Hospital, Charlo e was a periopera ve scrub/scout nurse at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, specialising in orthopaedics and neurosurgery. During her me at St Vincent’s, Charlo e completed her Graduate Cer fi cate in Clinical Nursing and gained broad experience across mul ple special es. Charlo e was ini ally exposed to the opera ng theatres at Cabrini Hospital, where her enthusiasm for periopera ve nursing was established. In her current role as PNSA, Charlo e has developed a keen passion for cardiothoracic surgery.

Kylie Cross Periopera ve Nurse Prac onerKylie has been a periopera ve nurse for more than 20 years. She completed her Graduate Diploma of Clinical Science (Periopera ve Nurse – Surgical Assistant) at Southern Cross University-Lismore in 2009 then went on to complete her Master of Advanced Nursing Prac ce (Nurse Prac oner) - Incorpora ng the Therapeu c Medica on Management Educa on Program at The University of Melbourne in 2012.Kylie was endorsed as a Nurse Prac oner in 2014.Currently, Kylie works as a Prac ce Nurse in a busy prac ce that has three surgeons and a dermotologist. Her role involves preopera ve consulta ons, surgical assistance in theatre, postopera ve care, assis ng with and performing in room procedures and cosme c ta ooing. Since endorsement Kylie enjoys the autonomy that her current role enables and the con nuity of care that she provides to her periopera ve pa ents.

Dr Alessandra Doolan Independent Healthcare Consultant Dr Alessandra Doolan is an independent healthcare consultant specialising in health economics, advocacy and policy. Alessandra obtained her PhD in clinical research and Master of Public Health at the University of Sydney, majoring in Health Economics and Policy Research. Alessandra has over 20 years of experience in healthcare in the public and private sectors including the areas of community care, allied health, and hospital quality management systems (QMS). Alessandra’s extensive experience includes building the ‘Value of Technology’ advocacy program for the Australian medical technology industry – an advocacy program established to providing evidence-based support to the medical technology industry for government discussions, healthcare policy recommenda ons and program implementa ons.

Alessandra holds high-level posi ons that involve government consulta on and working groups - providing strategic direc ons and deliverables represen ng the industry, various organisa ons, and pa ent and community groups. Alessandra holds an honorary tle at the Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney. Alessandra is recently appointed the role of a Specialist Advisor in the areas of medical devices, vaccines and biologicals with the Therapeu c Goods Administra on (TGA), the regulatory body for therapeu c goods in Australia and a division of the Australian Government Department of Health.

Dr Ingrid HopperMBBS, BMedSc (Hons), PhD, FRACPSenior LecturerHead, Drug and Devices Registries Department of Epidemiology and Preven ve Medicine School of Public Health and Preven ve MedicineDr Ingrid Hopper graduated from Medicine at Monash University in 1999, and received Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2010, specialising in clinical pharmacology. She completed her doctoral studies in heart failure therapeu cs, specifi cally medica on withdrawal in pa ents with polypharmacy, and was awarded the 2016 Mollie Holman award for best thesis in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She has published widely on cardiovascular therapeu cs and medica on safety.Ingrid is a NHMRC early career fellow. She is head of Drug and Device Registries at the Monash University School of Public Health and Preven ve Medicine, working within the Monash Registry Sciences Unit. As part of this posi on she oversees the running of the Australian Breast Device Registry. She is also an inves gator on a number of clinical trials in heart failure, hypertension and cardiovascular disease preven on through the Alfred Hospital and Monash University.

Dr Makarla SteadDr Makarla Stead is the Clinical Lead in Obstetric Anaesthesia and a Senior Staff Specialist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. She graduated from the University of Qld in 1996, and commenced training in Anaesthesia in 2000. A er a comple ng a Fellowship year in Obstetric Anaesthesia, Makarla commenced as a consultant at the RBWH. She was appointed the Obstetric Anaesthe c service Clinical Lead in 2009.Makarla is involved in ongoing mul disciplinary team simula on courses, and has presented at regional and na onal conferences. She enjoys the challenges associated with Obstetric Anaesthesia in the ter ary se ng.

Dr Kris Rasiah MBBS, PhD, FRACS

Dr Rasiah is a Consultant Urologist at the Royal North Shore and North Shore Private hospitals, amongst various other private hospitals in the Sydney Metropolitan area.

Dr Rasiah is a Urological Surgeon with a special clinical and research interest in cancers of the urogenital tract including prostate, tes s, renal and bladder cancer.

He has a PhD in prostate cancer research and has been a recipient of pres gious research fellowships for the NH&MRC as well as the Cancer Ins tute of NSW. Dr Rasiah leads a number of research projects at the Royal North Shore Hospital Campus and the Garvan-Kinghorne Ins tute.

He was the assistant surgeon for the very fi rst robo c radical prostatectomy in NSW back in 2006 and subsequently performed over 500 bedside assists before his own prac ce got too busy.

Amanda Clark Periopera ve Nurse EducatorAmanda Clark’s substan ve posi on is Periopera ve Nurse Educator at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Amanda completed the Bachelor and Masters of Periopera ve Nursing through Central Queensland University and the Masters of Business Administra on through the Australian Ins tute of Business. Amanda has worked as a periopera ve nurse in over 15 public and private hospitals throughout, Queensland, the United Kingdom and Africa.

She currently works as a Nurse Manager for the Metro North Hospital and Health Service’s Workforce Planning Unit. Amanda’s periopera ve interests include promo ng theatre nursing and building a sustainable periopera ve workforce that excels in pa ent and staff safety with a par cular focus on pa ent iden fi ca on and procedure matching associated with the WHO Surgical Checklist and sharps safety management.

Andrea KelleyClinical Nurse ConsultantAndrea Kelley is the Clinical Nurse Consultant for the Acute Pain Management Service, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Andrea completed her nursing training at the Maryborough Base Hospital and Midwifery at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Brisbane. She has 15 years experience in Post-Anaesthe c Care Nursing.

Andrea’s post-graduate studies include, Anaesthe cs and Recovery Room Nursing and Acute Pain Management. She has also completed Cer fi cate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.

In 2002 Andrea was appointed to the posi on she currently holds and established the nursing aspects of the Women’s Acute Pain Service.

Andrea has presented at numerous state and na onal conferences and par cipated in several clinical trials.

She has published an ar cle in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Andrea’s research interest is the promo on of safe and eff ec ve pain management for Obstetric pa ents and she is passionate about pain management educa on.
