Treatment of Prisoners
As Pro-Life people, we need be concerned about the quality of life for all people, which includes the innocent victims of war and crime, as well as prisoners and prisoners of war. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that even in a just war, “non-combatants, wounded soldiers and prisoners must be respected and treated humanely. Actions deliberately contrary to the law of nations and to its universal principles are crimes, as are the orders that command such actions. Blind obedience does not suffice to excuse those who carry them out” (CCC 2313). But even so, they must be treated with respect. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to visit the imprisoned, which is a response to Jesus’ call: “When I was in prison, you visited me” (Matthew 25:36). Even if we are unable to visit them physically, we can still visit them with our prayers.

From the Pastor’s Desk Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This week we are very excited to welcome the Totus Tuus team to our community as they lead a week of activities, discussions, prayer and fun with our youth in Grades 1-12. Four young adult team leaders are spending the week living in our community and staying with host families as they offer the Gospel message to our youth. We have heard of the good fruits of the Totus Tuus program for years and have wanted to bring it here in the past, but circumstances did not allow us the opportunity until now. We are so blessed to have this chance now. I am certain that all the youth will have a positive experience with Totus Tuus and that they will end the week with a greater appreciation for their Catholic Faith. Please make plans to join us for a potluck on Wednesday evening at St. Mary’s at 5:30 pm to meet the Totus Tuus team and to enjoy the company of those in our community. All are invited – bring the family and a dish to share!
This weekend we hear the familiar parable of the sower who goes out to plant seed, and some of the seed falls on different soils, either allowing the seed to take root and bear fruit or not. This is the first parable and the most foundational that Jesus presents in Matthew’s Gospel. It’s also the only parable that Jesus fully explains the meaning of. The soils represent the groundwork of our soul – that is, how ready our spirits are to accept the message of faith in Jesus. 1) The seed that falls on the path are snatched by birds and eaten. This
represents those that hear Jesus’ message but allow the Enemy to come and take away what they were given. The message of faith doesn’t take root, and they are unchanged.
2) The seed that falls on stony ground grows quickly, but its roots are shallow, and they quickly die. This represents those that hear the message of Jesus, but it doesn’t go deep enough in their soul, so the message does not endure.
3) The seed that falls on thorny ground takes root and grows, but the thorny vines choke the plant, and it dies. This represents those that hear the message of Jesus, but worldly distractions and anxieties cause their faith to be choked off.
4) The seed that falls on fertile ground takes roots, grows, and bears abundant fruit. This represents those who hear the message of Jesus, allow it to take root in their heart, and persevere in it so that their lives bear the fruits of love, joy, peace, faith, hope, goodness, etc.
Of course, we want our lives to be defined by the good soil (the fourth one described above). But at times we may find our spirits weakened and we falter. One of the other soils may better reflect the state of our soul at times, or we find that a loved one is stuck in one of the other states. But we are always invited to return to faith in Jesus, which is life-giving. No matter if we find our faith faltering every once in a while or almost all the time, this is the nice thing about Jesus – He will always welcome us back. If we come to Him and place our lives in His hands, He will nurture the soil of our soul and make it able to receive the message of faith effectively. But it requires prayer. It requires the grace of the Sacraments (which are amazing gifts of God to strengthen our spirit!). It requires the commitment to living as Christ lived. And it requires the humility to come to Jesus, be honest about our lives, ask forgiveness, and surrender our lives into His hands. Our Lord is the Master Sower. He knows what is needed to create the perfect groundwork in our soul for the seed of faith to be nurtured. But we must be ready and willing to place ourselves into His care.
God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]
