JaiDu,MauroEntrialgo,PatxiAraujoyFelipeUribarri.Elcontratosocial,elarterelacionalylosautómatas.ComportamientosAunquepodemosconsiderarnospersonastolerantes,cuandonuestrosvecinosparecentransgredirciertasnormassociales,podemosllegaraunarupturaquenosllevaaclamarpornuestrosderechos.Silosvecinossondeotracultura,o"tribu",susreglassonprobablementediferentesdelasnuestras.Cuandotenía12años,miprogramafavoritodetelevisiónera"Lasreglasdeljuego"(LasReglasdeJuego)(TVE,1977)unaseriededocumentalesantropológicosqueanalizaronlosprincipiosporlosqueserigenlassociedadesmodernas.DirigidoypresentadoporJoséAntonioJáuregui,catedráticodeAntropologíaSocialdelaUniversidaddeOxford,elpensabaquelosmecanismosdecomportamientorelacionadosconlavidasocial,talescomolavergüenza,ellenguaje,lasnormassocialeseinclusolareligión,soninnatasyuniversalesenlaespeciehumana.Muchosañosmástarde,duranteunavisitaaLondresen2000,asistíalaexposición"Inteligencia:NuevaBritishArt2000"enlaTateGallery.Descubríconsorpresaunproyectollamado"ElArchivoFolk",unreportevisualdelaculturapopularcontemporáneabritánicaquelosartistasJeremyDelleryAlanKanehabíacomenzadoelañoanterior.Esteproyectoculminóen2007consuadquisiciónporpartedelBritishCouncilylacreacióndeunmuseovirtual.DelleryKanehabíantransformadosupropiaobraartísticaenalgoquepodríaseretiquetadocomounestudioantropológicodelascostumbresbritánicas.Delleresconsideradounadelasprincipalesfigurasdel"arterelacional".Estaprácticaartísticaponemayorénfasisenlasrelacionesqueseestablecenentresí,yconelpúblicodeladinámicaartística,másqueencualquierobjetoartístico.Lasobrasqueseidentificanconestemovimientoartísticotiendenaestarsituadoenlasactividadescotidianasysuscontextos.Losprimerosusosdeltérmino"arterelacional"seatribuyenaNicolasBourriaud,exco-directordelPalaisdeTokioenParís,queloutilizóeneltítulodesulibro,RelationnelleEsthetique(EstéticaRelacional)(LesPressesduréelle,1998)yen1996,enelcatálogodelaexposición"Traffic"comisariadaporelmismo.Bourriaudpostulóquelasestrechasrelacionesquegeneralaciudadhantransformadolaconcepcióndelaactividadartística.Paraél,lapresenciadelfactorrelacionalenlaprácticaartísticarespondeaunanecesidadurgentedefomentarlarecuperaciónylareconstruccióndelasredessocialesenunasociedaddesujetosdivididos,aisladosyreducidosalacondicióndemerosconsumidorespasivos.Porsuerte,alosespectadoresdenuestroproyectonoselespideningunaacción,porloqueloscríticosdeestaformadearte,dirigidosporStephenWright,sepuedenrelajar.Nosenecesitanadamásalládeunareflexiónsobrenuestroscomportamientos.Onisiquieraeso.Lameracontemplacióntambiénpuedesersuficiente.

Thesocialcontract,relationalartandautómata:BehaviorsAlthoughwemayconsiderourselvestolerantpeople,whenourneighborsseemtotransgresscertainsocialnorms,wemayseeabreakthatleadsustocallforourrights.Iftheneighborsarefromanotherculture,or“tribe”,theirrulesareprobablydifferentfromours.WhenIwas12,myfavoriteTVshowwas“Lasreglasdeljuego”(TheRulesoftheGame)(TVE,NationalSpanishTelevisión,1977)aseriesofanthropologicaldocumentariesthatanalyzedtheprinciplesbywhichmodernsocietiesaregoverned.DirectedandpresentedbyJoséAntonioJáuregui,ProfessorofSocialAnthropologyattheUniversityofOxford,hethoughtthatthebehavioralmechanismsrelatedtosociallife,suchasshame,language,socialnormsandevenreligion,areinnateanduniversalinthehumanspecies.Manyyearslater,duringavisittoLondonin2000,Iattendedtheexhibition“Intelligence:NewBritishArt2000”attheTateGallery.Idiscoveredwithsurpriseaprojectcalled“TheFolkArchive”,avisualaccountofcontemporarypopularBritishculturethatartistsJeremyDellerandAlanKanehadbegunthepreviousyear.Thisprojectculminatedin2007withitsacquisitionbytheBritishCouncilandthecreationofavirtualmuseum.DellerandKanehadtransformedtheirownartisticworkintosomethingwhichcouldbelabelledananthropologicalstudyofBritishcustoms.Dellerisconsideredoneofthemainfiguresof“relationalart”.Thisartpracticeplacesgreateremphasisontherelationshipsestablishedbetween,andwith,theaudienceoftheartisticdynamicratherthanonanyartisticobject.Worksthatareidentifiedwiththisartisticmovementtendtobesituatedineverydayactivitiesandcontexts.Thefirstusesoftheterm“relationalart”areattributedtoNicolasBourriaud,formercodirectorofthePalaisdeTokyoinParis,whouseditinthetitleofhisbook,RelationnelleEsthetique(RelationalAesthetics)(Lespressesduréelle,1998)andin1996,intheexhibitioncatalog“Traffic”curatedbyhimself.Bourriaudpositedthatthecloserelationshipsthatthecitygenerateshavetransformedtheconceptionofartisticactivity.Forhim,thepresenceoftherelationalfactorinartisticpracticerespondstoapressingneedtoencouragetherecoveryandreconstructionofsocialnetsinasocietyofsplitsubjects,isolatedandreducedtothestatusofmerepassiveconsumers.Luckily,fortheviewersofourexhibitionwedonotaskhimorherforanyaction,sothecriticsofthisartform,ledbyStephenWright,canrelax.Nothingisneededbeyondareflectionuponourbehaviors.Ornoteventhat:merecontemplationisalsoworthwhile.Oneofthethingswemaychoosetocontemplatearethetermsofthe“socialcontract”thatstructuressomeofourrelations.In1762,Jean-JacquesRousseaupublishedOfTheSocialContract,OrPrinciplesofPoliticalRight(DucontratsocialouPrincipesdudroitpolitique),aworkonpoliticalphilosophythatprimarilyspeeksaboutthefreedomandequalityof“men”livingunderaStateestablishedbyasocialcontract.Toliveinthissociety,sothetheorygoes,humanbeingsagreetoanimplicitsocialcontractthatgivesthemcertainrightsinexchangeforgivingupthefreedomthatwouldotherwisebeavailableinthestateofnature.Assuch,therightsanddutiesofindividualsconstitutethetermsofthesocialcontract,whiletheStateistheentity

createdtoenforcethecontract.Buttherightsanddutiesarenotimmutableornatural.Andagreaternumberofrightsimpliesgreaterduties,whilstfewerrightsmeansfewerduties.ThisisaverycontentiousareaofdiscourseinEuropeatpresentMauroEntrialgo’sprofoundknowledgeofhumanrelationships,asseenthroughhiscomics–wehavealittlesampleintheexhibition–presentsthevision,“Frommywindows”,ofwhathappensaroundhim.Forhim,these“behaviors”arejust“littlemomentsofmylife”.Situationsandattitudesthatclashandthathereveals,seekingourcomplicityinasharedlaugh.Baseline(PilarBaizán)hassimilarconcerns,buttoanalyzethecommunityaroundus–forthisexhibitionBrussels-sheusefieldrecordings.FinallyhersearchbecomesasoundinstallationandanexperimentalliveimprovisationwiththecollaborationofPatxiAraujoandTxemaAgiriano.Threeofthem,Baizan,EntrialgoandAgiriano,liveinneighborhoodsthatbeinggentrified.Theyanalyzethisprocesswithcompassionandwithoutbitterness.JaiDualsopresentsanautobiographicalviewofaEuropeantown,butifBaizánandEntrialgoarepartoftheregenerationofdegradedneighbourhoodsundergoinggentrification,shespeaksfromtheotherside.Sheispartoftheimmigrantcommunity–inhercase,livinginGermany–whoaredenigratedbythemerefactofbeing.Throughherpoetryshetellsofherbitterexperienceassuch.Apainfulexperiencethatremindsusofthepeoplewhomayneverhaveavoice.ThepainterandphotographerFelipeUribarrirepresentscharacterswhorelatetoeachother.Throughhispaintinghespeaksofsocialinteraction.Ifsocialbehaviorisaresponsetosocialstimulationproducedbyothers,includingsymbolstheyconvey,socialinteractionisasequenceofstimulus-responserelationships.Weseethisinhisworkcalled"socialinteraction"Theinteractiveinstallation"TimeOut"ofPatxiAraujo,observesourbehaviorandslowsitdown.Itinteractwithussuggestingquestions.Thismachineobserveourbehaviors.Iwonderif“theTurk”,theautomatonchessplayerofWolfgangvonKempelen(1734-1804),thatinteractedwithchessmastersaroundtheworldwouldhaveworriedaboutallthisifhehadnotbeenhimselfafake.Weall,alsothis“machines”,communicatethroughourbehaviors.
