“F IRST IN THE HEAR T OF DETROIT”
This 2017 Flex is one of the vehicles Ford has donated to the DAV.
University of Detroit Mercy ishelping meet the current needfor engineers trained in SystemsEngineering with its new SystemsEngineering Graduate Certificate.
Detroit Mercy has been amongthe national leaders in SystemsEngineering education throughits Master of Science in ProductDevelopment (MPD) program, said school spokesman GaryErwin. Now, students have achance to earn a graduate certifi-cate in Systems Engineering.
“What we’ve done is taken – inmy opinion – the highest impactclasses out of the MPD program,in terms of systems engineering, and compiled them into a tight, unified curriculum that exposesengineers to the current state ofthe art in systems engineering,”said Michael Vinarcik, adjunctprofessor at Detroit Mercy.
The Systems Engineering Grad-uate Certificate was created injoint with the Ford Motor Compa-ny, which already had employeesenrolled in and graduating fromthe MPD program, Vinarcik said.
The credits earned in the Sys-tems Engineering Graduate Cer-tificate program can be used to-ward earning a master’s degree.
“It’s a great program,” saidFord employee Kyle Ebner. “I feltat home here. I felt like I couldtalk to any of the professors any-time I needed to, and they reallystrive to answer questions, evenafter hours. I think I learned morethan I expected I was going tolearn. I would recommend it toothers and I have at work.”
Detroit Mercy’s professors arereadily available to students, andthey are also widely respected inthe field of systems engineering, said Vinarcik.
Erwin said Vinarcik is consid-ered one of the most visible Sys-tems Engineering experts in thecountry and routinely speaks atsystems engineering conferenceshosted by the InternationalCouncil on Systems Engineering(INCOSE), National Defense In-dustrial Association (NDIA) andthe American Society for Engi-neering Education (ASEE).
He recently keynoted the 2017No Magic World Symposium.
“Mike brings a wealth of back-ground and experience in sys-tems engineering,” said DarrellKleinke, director of the SystemsEngineering Graduate Certificateprogram. “He’s taught in ourMaster of Product Development
department for many years.Without exception, his coursesare very well received. These areexperienced engineers takingthese classes, instantly applyingwhat they’ve learned in our pro-gram to their jobs and careers,

Thanks to Maven Gig, not own-ing a car is no barrier to makingmoney for drivers in today’s gigeconomy.
GM’s ride-sharing networkMaven is expanding. StartingAug. 10, freelance drivers in LosAngeles have access to MavenGig vehicles to support all theirhustles. Vehicle reservations areavailable through the Maven app, said GM spokeswomanStephanie Rice.
By fall 2017, Maven Gig willlaunch in Boston, Phoenix andWashington, D.C., and Baltimoreand Detroit will soon join themix, Rice said. This will be goodfor freelancers who want free-dom and flexibility, and MavenGig provides both.
Take “Jamie,” for example, whoearns a couple hundred dollarsas a freelancer picking up anddropping off passengers as a li-censed driver for a ridesharingcompany on an average Fridaynight, Rice said.
With Maven Gig, Jamie cannow increase earning power byadding other gigs. For instance, spending two hours during thelunch rush delivering food addsanother $30-$50. Delivering pack-ages and groceries during theday adds even more, Rice said.
And Maven Gig vehicles areavailable for flat weekly ratesthat include the car, unlimitedmiles, insurance (minus de-
ductibles) and maintenance.Having unlimited mileage and in-surance to cover personal andcommercial use are extremelyimportant for drivers in the gigeconomy, Rice said. Pricingstarts at $189 plus taxes for aChevrolet Cruze.
Additional vehicles include theChevrolet Malibu ($209 per weekplus taxes), Trax ($219 per weekplus taxes), Impala ($225 perweek plus taxes) and Bolt EV($229 per week plus taxes). TheChevrolet Bolt EV is available forreservation with free charging atEVgo stations for a limited time.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV with anEPA-estimated range of 238 all-
electric miles is the most popularvehicle among Maven Gig driv-ers, Rice said. More than 100 BoltEVs are available in Los Angelesand that number will double bythe end of 2017. Bolt EVs in SanFrancisco will double to morethan 125 by the end of the year.
In Boston, Maven Gig will startwith 20 Bolt EVs and will scale asinfrastructure allows.
Maven Gig Bolt EVs have driv-en 1.4 million all-electric miles inCalifornia since February 2017and have saved an estimated50,000 gallons of gas.

and seeing immediate results.Mike is very well respected byour students and their employ-ers. He’s developed a great repu-tation with Detroit Mercy.”The industry is constantly
changing and evolving. Vinarciksaid he is aware of those changesbecause he lives it every day as aleader in the field (he receivedthe 2017 Cameo Award for Mod-eling, Simulation, and AnalysisExcellence for his thought lead-ership in Model-Based SystemsEngineering). As technologyevolves, so does Detroit Mercy’sSystems Engineering program.“Systems have become very
complicated and complex withemergent behaviors,” Vinarciksaid. “There are so many thingsthat make developing a systemcomplicated today versus even20 years ago. To manage thatcomplexity and improve theodds of program success, it takesaccess to and knowledge of thecurrent state of the art in sys-tems engineering.“That’s what we’re trying to
teach the students with thesecourses in both the MPD and cer-tificate programs. It’s not just
about tools and processes, butalso about how to see the realproblem that needs to be solvedand to frame it properly. Theworst thing you can do is tosolve the wrong problem very ef-ficiently. We’re trying to showstudents how to see, understandand solve the right problem.”The program teaches students
state-of-the-art methods, such asModel-Based Systems Engineer-ing (MBSE), Erwin said. Studentsuse SysML, the systems model-ing language, to describe systembehavior, structure, interfaces, and requirements. SysML allowsengineers to make changes inone place and have that informa-tion cascade to every related ar-tifact and not have to manuallymake changes to every docu-ment and picture. The program also exposes stu-
dents to new technologies theymight never see working at a sin-gle company, Erwin said.“For students, because indus-
try is very competitive and thereis proprietary development anddesign all around, they don’t getto see what other companies aredoing,” Kleinke said. “Of course,we don’t share any proprietaryinformation, but Mike has signifi-
cant visibility into applications ina variety of industries and organ-izations because of his involve-ment in INCOSE, NDIA and otherorganizations. He can give thema feel for what the entire industrylooks like and how they compareto others taking on similar chal-lenges. With his experience andknowledge of how systems engi-
neering been applied at othercompanies, he can bring that. That’s how he makes such an im-pact at our students’ companiesso quickly.”For more on the Systems Engi-
neering Graduate Certificate, contact Director of Graduate Re-cruiting David Pistrui at 313-993-3378 or [email protected].
DETROIT (AP) – A GermanVolkswagen executive pleadedguilty Aug. 4 to conspiracy andfraud charges in Detroit in ascheme to cheat emissions ruleson nearly 600,000 diesel vehicles.Shackled at the wrists and an-
kles and wearing red prison garb,Oliver Schmidt appeared beforeU.S. District Judge Sean Cox aspart of the U.S. government’scase involving the automaker, which has admitted to usingsoftware to get around U.S. emis-sions standards.Schmidt, 48, is a former man-
ager of a Volkswagen engineeringoffice in suburban Detroit whowas arrested in January while onvacation in Miami. He faces up tofive years in prison for conspira-cy to defraud the U.S., wire fraudand violation of the Clean AirAct.A second count of giving false
statement under the Clean AirAct carries a possible sentenceof up to two years in prison. He remains jailed and is sched-
uled to be sentenced Dec. 6. Healso could face deportation.Schmidt is accused of telling
regulators technical problemswere to blame for the differencein emissions in road and labtests.“Schmidt participated in a
fraudulent VW scam that priori-tized corporate sales at the ex-pense of the honesty of emis-sions tests and trust of the Amer-ican purchasers,” Deputy Assis-tant Attorney General Jean E.Williams, who is in the JusticeDepartment’s Environment andNatural Resources Division, saidin a news release following theplea.Schmidt’s attorney declined to
comment after the plea hearing.VW pleaded guilty in March to
defrauding the U.S. governmentand agreed to pay $4.3 billion inpenalties, on top of billions moreto buy back cars. Most of the VW employees
charged in a scheme are in Ger-many and out of reach of U.S. au-thorities.U.S. authorities had been
pressing Volkswagen over emis-sions test discrepancies and thecheating had been going on forseveral years. In 2015, news
emerged in the U.S. of Volkswa-gen’s use of software that turnedoff emissions controls. The software detected when
cars were being tested andturned the emissions controls offduring normal driving. The result was the cars emit-
ted more than 40 times the U.S.limit for the pollutant nitrogenoxide.Schmidt told Cox that VW
management directed him in2015 not to discuss the software. Some 11 million cars world-
wide were equipped with thesoftware. Meeting U.S. emissionsstandards were part of the com-pany’s “clean diesel” marketingstrategy.“You knew these representa-
tions made to U.S. consumerswere false,” Cox told Schmidt.Volkswagen reached a $15 bil-
lion civil settlement in the UnitedStates with environmental au-thorities and automobile owners.

Call Kango for Kids, Get Ride in a Pacifica
The Pacifica is the preferred minivan used by app provider Kango.
new Ford Flex utilities into serv-ice taking ill and disabled veter-ans to Veteran Affairs medicalcenters across the country.
New additions to the DAV fleetwill be deployed to locations inAugusta, Ga.; Des Moines, Iowa;Topeka, Kan.; Asheville, N.C.;Memphis, Tenn.; and Waco,Texas. New Orleans will get twonew vehicles.
Over the past 21 years, Fordhas donated 215 vehicles to theDAV Transportation Network, which was formed in 1987 andhas helped more than 18 millionveterans reach VA facilities.
“Without Ford’s generosity andthe hard work of our volunteers,we would not have been able toprovide nearly 700,000 rides forveterans last year alone,” saidDave Riley, DAV national com-mander.
“Ford vehicles are crisscross-ing the country for veterans, traveling almost 23 million milesevery year to make certain ourheroes can access the care theyearned.”
Jim Vella, president, Ford Mo-tor Company Fund, said the com-pany is proud to improve the mo-bility of this country’s heroicmen and women by enablingthem to get to and from the vitalmedical care that can improvetheir quality of life.
“We are inspired by theircourage and salute their sacri-fices in protecting our free-doms,” said Vella.
Ford Fund, the philanthropicarm of Ford Motor Company, isalso continuing its support of theDAV Jesse Brown MemorialYouth Scholarship.
The program provides grantsto young men and women who
have generously volunteeredtheir time and provided distin-guished service to help disabledveterans in their communities,Mitchell said.
With Ford Fund’s help, DAVhas awarded nearly $1.2 millionin scholarships to these excep-tional young leaders.
Ford also sponsors the Nation-al Disabled Veterans WinterSports Clinic, a rehabilitationprogram held annually in themountains of Colorado thathelps improve the physical andmental well-being of severely in-jured veterans, as they meetchallenges such as skiing, skat-ing and rock wall climbing.
Henry Ford began hiring dis-abled veterans returning fromWorld War I in 1919.
In 1922, Ford organized across-country caravan of 50Model Ts to take disabled veter-ans to their national convention,Mitchell said. That was the be-ginning of the company’s 95-yearrelationship with DAV, saidMitchell.
Ford’s support for militaryfamilies today includes programssuch as nurse assistant trainingthrough the American Red Cross, and providing Ford Blue OvalScholarships to military mem-bers and their spouses to pre-pare them for careers in health-care.
Ford Focus on Freedom hon-ors current and former militaryveterans with a special VIP eventat the annual Ford Fireworks inDetroit, Mitchell said.
Since 1974, Ford and FordFund have provided nearly $11million to veterans’ organiza-tions. Ford today employs nearly6,000 veterans, plus hundreds ofactive military personnel, re-servists and guardsmen.

It’s truly food for thoughtabout how the 2017 ChryslerPacifica is quieter.
Designers of the new minivanused a soy-based foam to keepnoise from entering the passen-ger cabin of the Pacifica, said Ed-ward Cardenas, multimedia edi-tor for Fiat Chrysler.
The 2017 Pacifica has recentlywon awards for lightweighting,Cardenas said.
In order to reduce the weightof the minivan, Fiat Chrysler hadto get creative in the ways thecompany used to get the weightof the Pacifica down, Cardenassaid.
The plant-based foam blocksunwanted noise from enteringthe vehicle cabin while also sav-ing on the overall weight of theminivan.
The soy foam has a lower den-sity than conventional acousticmaterial and weighs less, Carde-nas said.
Since it is lighter, the foam pro-vides yet another weight savingsto the Pacifica, which is nearly250 pounds lighter than its pred-ecessor.
In addition to being lighter, thesoy-based product offers somecharacteristics not2017 ChryslerPacifica Limited found in petrole-um-based products normallyused in such materials.
The soy foam has a lower vis-cosity and a longer shelf life thantraditional acoustic materials,Cardenas said.
The new foam also allowsgreater logistical flexibility forthe plant because its six-monthshelf life is two times longer thanthat of commonly used foam.
This new body sealer was de-veloped and supplied by DowAutomotive Systems.
In addition to being lighter, thelower density requires less foamto be used to achieve the desiredperformance, and it reducescosts.
The soy foam was first usedon vehicles at the SterlingHeights Assembly Plant, andmost recently on the 2014 JeepCherokee.
Crews were also able to adaptexisting equipment to accommo-date the injection process withthe new foam.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) – Teslais raising $1.5 billion as it rampsup production of the Model 3sedan, its first mass market elec-tric car.
The company said Aug. 7 thatit planned to offer senior notesdue in 2025 and would use theoffering’s proceeds to furtherstrengthen its balance sheet dur-ing rapid scaling of the Model 3.
Recently CEO Elon Musk saidinvestors should have “zero con-cern” about whether Tesla willbe able to make 10,000 Model 3sper week by next year.
Tesla just delivered the first 30Model 3s to employees at theend of July.
Musk worried some investorswhen he warned that Tesla wasabout to embark on “at least sixmonths of manufacturing hell”as it attempts to get Model 3 pro-duction to 5,000 cars per weekby December.
Its $35,000 starting price – halfthe cost of Tesla’s previous mod-els – and range of up to 310 miles(498 km) could bring hundredsof thousands of customers intothe automaker’s fold, taking itfrom a niche luxury brand to themainstream.
Tesla burned through $1 bil-lion in the second quarterpreparing for the Model 3’s ar-rival.

Improving a vehicle’s perform-ance while helping automakersachieve lightweighting goals isno easy task. That’s where DowAutomotive’s new Specflexpolyurethane systems come in.
The Specflex systems fromDow Automotive Systems can becustomized to meet under-the-hood performance requirementswhile balancing weight and pro-cessing targets, said Dowspokesman Chris Swart.
In addition to offering soundabsorption, barrier and/or damp-ing qualities for hoodliners,Specflex provides customizedflammability and fast-curing sys-tems to enable increased produc-tivity and deliver large, complexshapes, Swart said.
“Specflex hoodliners enablecustomers to address global re-quirements for road traffic noisereduction,“ said Dr. Esther Quin-tanilla, Europe, the Middle Eastand Africa (EMEA) marketingmanager for Dow AutomotiveSystems. “This lightweightpolyurethane foam provides bet-ter acoustics control and weightadvantages while also deliveringa high level of thermoformingand stiffness. Specflex can alsobe used for air intakes, engineside dashboards, transmissiontunnel insulators and water box-es.”
The new Specflex solutions areavailable with low density topass requirements such as MVSS302 and superior flammability topass PV 3357, Quintanilla said. The foams meet physical, acoustical and processing re-quirements with minimal waste.

Interest rates on new-vehicleloans fell to a six-month low inJuly as automakers ramped upsummer zero-percent financedeals, according to a new analy-sis from Edmunds, the car shop-ping and information platform.
The annual percentage rate(APR) on new financed vehiclesaveraged 4.77 percent in July, down from 4.96 percent in June, said Edmunds spokeswomanMonica Favorite. And 11.3 per-cent of purchasers who financedtook advantage of zero-percentfinancing, up from 9.47 percent inJune and 10.2 percent a year ago.
“Zero-percent finance dealsare common in the summer, butcar buyers can save even morethis year,” said Jessica Caldwell,Edmunds executive director of
industry analysis. “Even thoughinterest rates were lower on av-erage in July than at any time inthe past six months, they’re stillhovering at highs not seen since2009. These higher interest ratesmake zero-percent financing abig carrot for dealers seeking tolure car shoppers.”
Overall, interest rates on autofinancing have been higher in2017 than in recent years. July’saverage APR is up 5.6 percentyear over year – 14.2 percenthigher than it was five years ago.
“In today’s declining market, every sale counts,” Caldwellsaid. “We anticipate automakerswill continue to ramp up zero-percent finance offers as we getdeeper into the summer sell-down season.”

en is to kind of think about thewhole site but also recognizethat very few projects wouldneed the whole site,’’ said JaniceKarcher, vice president of eco-nomic development for thechamber. “Many of the requeststhat we’ve received are compa-nies that want to occupy 50- or100,000-square-feet and thosekinds of facilities can locate onfive to 10 acres and don’t need390.’’The grant also allows officials
to identify services at the sitethat could be vital to potentialdevelopers, such as transporta-tion access, size and location ofwater lines, size and location ofsewer lines and where gas andelectric services are.“This level of information al-
lows us to get in front of moreprospective companies, develop-ers and be able to say, ‘look,we’ve done our homework tomake it easier for you to evaluatethe site.’ That’s the real goalhere,’’ Karcher said. “That’s real-ly helpful in being able to avoid
surprises in potential projectsbut also to help zero in an opti-mal portions of the site.’’Most of the 390-acre Buick City
closed in 1999, creating one ofthe state’s largest brownfieldsites. GM’s Powertrain FlintNorth closed in 2010 and endedmore than a century of manufac-turing at the site.Buick City employed nearly
30,000 at its peak.
