S tudents have the opportunity to
explore the magical city of St. Pe-
tersburg for 4 weeks in the summer
at Stony Brook University’s International
Summer School founded by SBU Pro-
fessor of Linguistics John Bailyn. This
program, featuring a range of courses in
cultural studies, linguistics, media, film
and others, is housed at St. Petersburg
State University, Russia’s oldest univer-
sity.
“Explore St. Petersburg!” features an ex-
tensive cultural program. Additionally
students select an internship such as
volunteering, teaching English, working
with children or community service.

COURSES OFFERED
All participants take:
HUR 249: Russia Today (GLO, HUM)
A comparative course in post-Cold War, U.S. – Russian relations and culture.
Additionally, students select from the following:
WST 103: Women, Culture, and Difference
(CER, HUM)
CCS 101: Introduction to Cinema & Cultural
Studies (ARTS, HUM)
CCS 200: Media History (ARTS)
CCS 202: Film Genres (ARTS)
CCS 203: Cinema History (ARTS, GLO)
LIN 101: Human Language (SBS, SNW)
LIN 425: Special Topics in Linguistics
CLT 221: Cross-Cultural Encounters (HFA+)
RUS 447: Directed Readings in Russian (EXP+)
All students will also be matched with an intern-ship/experiential learning experience for 4-6 hours/week based on their personal and aca-demic interests.
All participants following the Stony Brook Curric-ulum (SBC) will fulfill GLO and EXP+ in addition to requirement(s) fulfilled by their coursework.
