TheCatholicCharismaticRenewalexiststoinviteallpeopletoexperiencethefireandbaptismofthe

HolySpirit—anencounterwhichopensusalltoalife-changingrelationshipwithJesusChristandtheloveofGodtheFather.

ToservetheChurchinherunderstandingandproclama-tionof“baptismintheHolySpirit,”theNationalServiceCommittee(NSC)wasestablishedtoguidethefaithfulindevelopingarelationshipwiththethirdpersonoftheTrinity:GodtheHolySpirit.

PopeJohnPaulIIsummeditupbestin2004,“ThankstotheCharismaticMovementmany...haverediscov-eredPentecostasalivingandpresentrealityintheirdailylife.”Hedeclared,“IdesirethatthespiritualityofPentecostbespreadintheChurchasarenewedthirstofprayer,holiness,communionandproclamation.”

TheRenewal,with“baptismintheHolySpirit”atitsheart,isgiventotheChurchfora“newevangelization”andthetransformationofsociety.

AsafruitoftheSecondVaticanCouncil,theCharismaticRenewalbeganin1967atDuquesneUniversityignitingbaptismintheHolySpiritaroundtheglobe.Sincethenithasresultedinthedeeperconversionsofover150millionCatholicsworldwide—tensofmillionsrighthereintheU.S.—whohavehadtheirlivestransformedbythisgraceinthelifeoftheChurch.

Duringthe45thAnniversaryConference(Philadelphia2012)theNSCannouncedwithotherleadershipgroupsintheRenewalplansforaJubileecelebration.Thisfive

Spirit,theNSChasalwayssoughttobe“in”theChurch.ThecurrentEpiscopalConsultantstotheNSCareArchbishopRobertCarlsonofSt.LouisandBishopSamJacobsofHouma-Thibodaux,Louisiana.

TodaytheNSCcontinuesadvancingeffortsoftheRenewalhereintheUnitedStatesthroughlead-ershiptraining,resourcedevelopmentandongoingservicestosupportthe“NewEvangelization”andbaptismintheHolySpirit:

• ConveneAnnualConferences.Focusing on leaders as well as those in a variety of service ministries to develop their growth in life in the Spirit.• InitiateDynamicOutreachEvents.Supporting national and local leaders, Renewal participants, Youth Ministers, as well as Young Adults and Families.• DevelopToolsfortheNewEvangelization.Growing use of social media, websites and other electronic communications, e.g. Facebook extends the message of God’s love, the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit to Renewal participants as well as newer audiences.• PublishPentecostTodayandothermaterials.Supporting life in the Holy Spirit with a particular emphasis on leadership formation.• StaffChariscenterUSA.Where the day to day work gets done!

TobetterservetheChurchandmovetowardsthe2017anniversaryoftheDuquesneweekend,theNSC’sTowardtheJubileeCampaignseekstoraise$1millionwithtwogoalsinmind:expandoureventsandelectronicoutreachtoneweraudiences,particularlyyouthandyoungadults(included here is the hiring of a young adult minister for this area of outreach);andstrengthenthelongtermfinancialstabilityoftheNSCthroughtheThirdMillenniumFundfortheNewEvangelization.

OneofthepriestsintheRenewalshareshowhislifewasforeverchangedwhentheunconditionalloveofGodwaspouredintohisheartwhenhewasbaptizedintheHolySpirit.“Adramaticchangetookplaceinmypriesthoodafterbeing‘baptizedintheHolySpirit’...Ialwaysbe-lievedthatGodlovedmebutbeingbaptizedintheHolySpiritgavemeapersonalexperienceofGod’slovethatwasandcontinuestobesovividitcolorsandinfluenceseverythinginmylife!I’msureIwouldnotbeapriestto-dayhaditnothappenedtome...Thelightwasturnedoninthelibraryofmyyearsofstudy,bringingnewlife,vitalityandexcitementtomyfaith.”

Atarecentconferenceayoungadultshared:“Asafresh-manincollegeIdecidedtotakealeapoffaithandjoina[collegeoutreachministry]lookingforsomethingmore…IwasblownawaybytheholinessofthepeopleandtheleadershipandwasbaptizedintheHolySpirit.Itwasamazing.Therewerenofireworks,butafewtears…reallyfeltadifferenceinmylife:desiredtoreadScriptureforthefirsttime,desiredtoevangelize,toreachout,totakethisfaiththatwehaveandshareitwithothers.”

ThisoutpouringoftheHolySpiritcalledtheCatholicCharismaticRenewalisaresponsetothecriticalchal-lengesfacingourChurchtoday.Itisadivineopportunitytorejectthepopculture’snew-ageviewsandreplaceitwitha“cultureofPentecost.”Itoffersanswerstothequestionssomanyask:

• Howdoweraiseourchildren/grandchildrenin theFaith?• Howcanwepassonourrelationshipwiththe Lordtoourneighborsandtherestofsociety?• Howdoweliveholylivesinanincreasing anti-Catholic,anti-Christiansociety?
