To “Doctors on Call” Physician Volunteers: Thank you so much for lending your time and talent to our public service program “Doctors on Call.” In this booklet you will find the following resources:

If you need additional guidance or support, or have any questions, please let us know during your orientation, or ask the Pennsylvania Medical Society staff person at any time during the event.

Instructions for Physician Volunteers

What can I expect while I’m here? During the program, area residents will call a toll-free number to ask medical questions for you and other member physicians. You will respond to patients’ call during the event. You may also be asked for an interview with the station, though most interviews have been scheduled ahead of time. If you are asked and would agree to be interviewed, please leave your phone off the hook and step away from the phones for a few minutes. Cameras will pan the room occasionally to film you and your colleagues fielding calls. Also, be aware that, though the program has an ending time, you could be on the phone for another 30 minutes wrapping up conversations and answering last minute calls. What kind of assistance should I offer? Your task will be to listen closely to patients, discuss their concerns in general terms and provide guidance toward their next step in medical care. Please do not offer diagnoses or specific medical advice. We anticipate that most calls will relate to basic health care. If callers seek more specific information, you may refer them to another source for assistance, e.g. their family physician, a free or reduced-cost clinic, or an emergency room. Because some callers may not have health insurance or a primary care physician and others may not know how to contact their insurance company, this packet contains that information. How should I answer phone calls? Greet the caller with a simple and friendly message, such as “Hello, this is Dr. __________. May I help you?” Assist the callers as best you can, with your voice showing compassion, understanding and patience, but without providing specific medical guidance. Try to limit each call to 3-4 minutes. If you receive a harassing or annoying phone call, politely end the conversation and hang up. After each call, please take a few seconds to record it in your phone log. Will I have any resources to assist me? In addition to the resources listed in this booklet, a copy of the Physicians’ Desk Reference will also be available for your use. What about food, refreshments, and a break? Dinner will be available before and after your shift. We will also provide snacks and drinks (coffee, tea, soda, water). You will be able to bring drinks to your table, but not food. If you need a break, please return as quickly as possible. Simply leave your phone off the hook until you return and be conscious that the cameras could be panning over the phone bank at any time.
