The Mass – “Do this in memory of me” In 2005 Pope Benedict XVI underlined how participation at Sunday Mass must be seen by a Catholic not as an imposition or a weight, but as a need and joy. To meet with brothers and sisters, to listen to the Word of God and to be nourished of Christ, immolated for us, is an experience that gives meaning to life, which infuses peace in the heart. Without Mass, we Catholics cannot live. The celebration of the Mass replenishes our memory of Jesus enabling us to recognize him on life’s journey - like the two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). The Eucharist, therefore, gives true and full meaning to our lives. Celebrating Fatima Please join us in celebrating this significant event the 100 year anniversary of the Apparitions in Fatima. A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six year old daughter and said, “Would you like to say the blessing?” “I wouldn’t know what to say,” the girl replied. “Just say what you hear Mummy say,” the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?” Listening requires a great skill. It is not only repeating what we hear but understanding the message which one tries to communicate. On the other hand we feel affirming when we are being heard. It gives us a sense of who we are. There is nothing more painful than not being heard, not being understood, especially when we are trying to express our deep feelings or hurts or needs. Just imagine that you say to a friend, “I’m going to the hospital to get the results of my tests. The doctor thinks I may have cancer.” And your friend replies, “I’m going to shop to buy some cigarettes.” In the Gospel today we read that the two disciples of Jesus were leaving Jerusalem. They were dejected, distraught, discouraged and disillusioned with broken dreams. They were trying to make sense of the shocking events that took place in Jerusalem. Everything they hoped for has come to a terrible end. While being so depressed, they meet a stranger who begins to ask them questions and willing to listen to their grieving. In the course of the conversation, the stranger talks about the prophecies concerning a suffering Messiah. His words put fire in their hearts. They do not want him to leave. The stranger fulfils their desire in a remarkable way. He takes bread, blesses it and breaks it. Then they recognised him. Christ has indeed risen. The story of dejection becomes a story of hope. It was only when Jesus had listened to them that they could hear him speak. The Emmaus story is a model for our lives. It is a model of listening in which we have to be trained. We need to be able to listen to another without distraction, without judgement or condemnation, without worrying about what our response will be, without being defensive, without intrusion by our egos and our personal agendas, trusting that the Lord will give us the appropriate response when it is needed. Let us pray that we will be more present to ourselves, to others and to God, and more available to be God’s instruments.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1346-1347 The Liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharistic together form „one single act of worship‟, the Eucharistic table set for us is the table both of the Word of God and the Body of the Lord. Is this not the same movement as the Paschal meal of the risen Jesus with his disciples? Walking with them he explained the scriptures to them; sitting with them at the table „he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.‟

Next Weekend - 4th Sunday of Easter - Year A

Readings: Acts : 2:14, 36-41; 1Peter 2:20-25; Gospel - John 10:1-10.

Feasts of the Week 2 May - St Athanasius, bishop, doctor. Memorial.

Born in 295. Buried on this day in 373 at Alexandria (Egypt). Attended the first ecumenical council of Nicaea as a deacon. Later, as bishop of Alexandria, he upheld that council's doctrine in the face of great opposition from Arians, including several emperors. Sent into exile a number of times. Venerated as the "Father of Orthodoxy" for championing the true and equal divinity of the incarnate Son of God.

3 May - Sts Philip & James, apostles. Feast.

Philip, from Bethsaida in Galilee, became a disciple of Jesus and one of the twelve. Recorded in the Fourth Gospel as recognising in Jesus the one foretold by Moses and the prophets (John 1:45) and as introducing Gentiles to the Lord (John 12:20-22). According to Acts 8:5, he was the first to preach the gospel to non-Jews. James, son of Alphaeus, was also one of the twelve called by Jesus (Mark 3:18ff). Known as James the Less. Venerated traditionally as the author of the letter of James and as leader of the Church in Jerusalem, where he died in the year 62. The joint feast of Philip and James has been celebrated in Rome since at least the sixth century.
