MonValley District Newsletter

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In 2014, I came to you as a rookie District Superintendent, surprised to

be in the position, at this place, at this time in my life.

Even after “Charm School” (training for DS), I found myself on a sharp

learning trajectory. These past two years you have taught me, nurtured me,

cheered me on, and challenged me to cite specific paragraph numbers from the

Book of Discipline. Together, we have built a history.

Leaving MonValley, I will take with me more gray hair (wisdom), a

sense of adventure (even the GPS can’t find you), and most precious, priceless

friendships never to be forgotten.

My prayer is that I leave you with a closer relationship with the West

Virginia Annual Conference and a renewed commitment and urgency to fulfill

the Great Commission. Let us continue to partner together to spread the Gospel

to all the world. So, my peace I leave with you, undergirding you with love!

My favorite verse of scripture, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things

through Him who strengthens me.”

Grace and peace, Rick

Wesley Foundation at FSU/PC&TC: The Wesley Foundation ended the year on a high note, serving over 200

meals during finals week. We are thankful for the donations that we have received this year. As always the

donations to the food pantry allow students to supplement their weekly menus. The monetary donations support the

overall ministries of the Wesley Foundation. We are planning The Cross and Flame 5K walk/run fundraiser

September 24, 2016. The fundraiser will go to support the ministries of the Wesley Foundation and also help us to

work toward a mission trip. We would appreciate your support in this endeavor. If a church or individual would like

to donate: $150.00 they will get there name printed on the t-shirt; $250.00 a church will receive their logo plus a free

runner registration. If you have any questions please contact Maria at 304- 657-0081 or by email at

Parish Coordinator News

Morgantown East Cooperative Parish: The Morgantown East Parish had a Pentecost Celebration Sing on May

15 at Mt. Union UMC which the parish has been helping to paint and fix up to welcome visitors. God showed up and

we felt God's Spirit. A special song was written for the occasion by Doug Saunders called "The Master Artist." We

will have another parish sing on Sunday evening, July 24 at 6:00PM at Harner Chapel. Our pastors and cooperative

parish members are reading the book "Get Their Name" by Anderson, Farr and Katon. We will discuss it at our

summer cookout on August 5 at 5:00PM at Big Bear Lake. We are Better Together.

- Brad Bennett, Parish Coordinator

Morgantown Urban Cooperative Parish: The Morgantown Urban Cooperative Parish consists of the

following congregations: Avery, Sabra/Highland/Jones, Spruce Street, Suncrest, Wesley and Woodland/Fairview and

the WVU Campus Ministry. We are beginning to plan for 2016; however, we have a few ideas in the works.

Currently some of our parish clergy provide a weekly lectionary study for the residents of The Village at Heritage

Point in Morgantown. Our hope is to expand our presence and service to include a weekly worship service which

includes Holy Communion. Other planning includes plans for the clergy to begin meeting on a regular basis.

- Timothy Allen, Parish Coordinator

Shinnston Cooperative Parish: This month we celebrate our laity and clergy of the Shinnston

Cooperative Parish and their readiness to help each other to reach people for Jesus Christ. We continue to

meet monthly to understand how to work together and to see the needs in our communities. We were

blessed to have Gayle Lesure from Greater Clarksburg Cooperative Parish come and speak with us about

what she does and how we can be involved. At our upcoming meetings we will welcome Shawn Moore

from Community Action and Rev. Maria Wiblin from Fairmont University Campus Ministry. Stay tuned

for more happenings from the Shinnston area… - Cindy Murphy, Parish Coordinator

School of Congregational Development 2016

“Into The Deep”

August 17-20, 2016

Evanston, Illinois

The School of Congregational Development is a premier event for United Methodist Leaders for equipping

conference leaders, clergy, and laity to lead vital, dynamic, life-changing congregations. Sponsored by

Discipleship Ministries, Global Ministries and Path 1, this year’s event is being hosted by the Northern

Illinois Conference and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. At SCD 2016 we will be called to go

Into The Deep to Discover, Engage, be Equipped, and to live into the Possibilities that surround us as we

share the grace and love of Jesus Christ in our congregations and communities. Speakers will include

Bishop Sally Dyck, Leonard Sweet, Jorge Lockward, Chip Freed and Candace Lewis. Hotel reservations

should be made by July 1. Register online at www.scdumc.org.

Why You Should Send Your Child to District Youth Camp

Church Camp. Those two words can evoke wonderful feelings for many of the youth in our area. For many,

it brings back memories of fun, friends, fellowship, and a longing for July to get here faster. Luckily for us, July and

District Youth Camp is just around the corner. Last year at the MonValley District Junior Youth Camp, more than 50

campers and a small army of hard working counselors and teachers got together for one of the hottest weeks in July

for 3 fun-filled, Spirit-filled days. Old and new campers came together to see old friends, make new friends, learn

about the Good Book and had a ton of fun while doing it.

This year the Junior Youth Camp will take place July 24-27 at Camp Muffly in Morgantown. Junior camp is

open to any child entering 3rd grade through 6th grade. Many parents (and kids) may be a bit frightened by the idea of

sending or going to camp for 3 days, especially if this is the first time away from home. We want to ease some of

those worries this year by giving you an idea of what we do at camp and why you should send your child to hang out

with us.

Your child will have positive role models. Every teacher and counselor is a volunteer. This means that they

want to be at camp and spend time with your child. They want to help nurture your child and teach them about the

Good News. Seasoned campers look forward to seeing the counselors and teachers each year, they get excited when

they realize their favorite teacher or counselor is helping at camp again. These are the type of people you want your

child to look up to.

Your child will learn about God. Each morning we have a devotional before breakfast. After breakfast, we

have 5 classes throughout the morning and early afternoon to focus on a particular theme or scripture. In the evening

we have some praise and worship time. Right before lights out, we take a few minutes to thank God for all he has

done for us that day and say our nightly prayers. Your child will have ample opportunities to learn about God each

day.

Your child will have fun! While we take plenty of time each day to learn about God, we also have a hoot

doing it. We swim, have silly string and water balloon fights, play games, have a scavenger hunt, make s’mores, and

do so much more.

The teachers and counselors can’t wait to make new connections with your child this year. It’s going to be a

blast! If you have any questions or concerns about camp, please feel free to contact the Camp Director, Codi

Richards at 304-657-2013 or email [email protected]
