I Hello, Me again! I hope that your semester is going well both academically and within your organizations. In this newsletter you will find information on winter blues, sustaining your organization, a NACURH change, the spotlights and some additional information. That is all very helpful but I want to take this opportunity to spark a thought. What is going to be your legacy? What do you want your organization and specifically your Executive Board to be known for? Take a look back at the goals you may have set at the beginning of your term and determine if you have accomplished what you set out to do. This is not meant to be a stresser but rather an encouraging reminder. It is only February, you still have time to achieve your tasks and in the process help prepare your organization for the next year. I hope this thought leaves you well and motivated, but for extra measure here is one of my favorie quotes: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” - As always, if you have questions, concerns, or just need a sounding board please do not hesitate to contact me! What do you want your organization and specically your Executive Board to be known for? Take a look back at the goals you may have set at the beginning of your term and determine if you have accomplished what you set out to do. This is not meant to be a stresser but rather an encouraging reminder. Beat Those Winter BluesBy Dan Hill

Our region sees a lot of snow every year, that’s one thing that none of us will deny. Whether you love or hate winter, cabin fever and the winter blues happen more than we’d like. The winter blues can really dampen the leadership spirit, and can even prevent productivity and motivation, which is why I’m going to help you beat it; these tips should help!

Exercise! That’s right it is no surprise that working out can not only relieve stress and prepare that beach bod, but also raise your spirits and combat depression. Even if you just fast walk the halls for a minimum of 35 minutes a day, it should help!

Change the playlist! One of the best things to help boost your mood is music, that’s why it’s suggested that if you’re feeling the winter blues, you should play upbeat tunes. This is perfect to combine with your exercises!

Brighten your life! In the winter, I’m sure it’s not hard to notice that the days are that much shorter and darkness reigns over the land. Darkness can be a leading cause to winter linked depression, so that’s why we must use light to combat the sadness. Some simple ways to achieve this is you can open the curtains or blinds, turn on more lights in the room, sit by a sunny window, or basically anything brighter helps!

Eat smarter. Again, it’s no surprise that the healthier you eat the more energized your body will be and the less your mood will be dampened. So next time you go for a snack, consider putting down those potato chips and pick up the fruit instead!

NACURH Structural ChangesInformation provided by memo from Nathan Tack, NACURH ChairpersonIf you have not heard yet, the NACURH Chair Nathan Tack recently sent a memorandum to NACURH. Within this memo was an explanation of a realignment of the corporate structure involving the NACURH Information Center (NIC) and the NACURH Service and Recognition Oce (NSRO). For the 2016-2017 they will remain separate entities, but at the conclusion of NACURH 2017 they will become one oce for unied services to members of NACURH. Currently there is a team of NACURH leadership working to establish a strong transition from two oces to one. If there are any questions they should be directed to [email protected].

Sustain Your OrganizationBy Dan Hill

We all come from an organization that can see quite a bit of turnover from year to year, especially since membership and executive boards may move o-campus, transfer, or graduate. With turnover of people, comes the turnover of information and experience. It bares resemblance to the age-old expression that if you don’t pay attention to history, it will inevitably repeat itself. If there is not enough consistency or stability between years, it can likely lead to the demise of an organization which is exactly what we don’t want. Below are some ways to keep longevity and information within your group.

Strategically plan ahead. Just as NACURH did and GLACURH is in the process of doing, your campus organizations should strategically plan what the organization should do in order to achieve stability, success, and possible growth.

Seek your successor’s successor. That is more than just a tongue twister; it’s a strategy that allows for younger members to begin learning now. If there are multiple people learning the necessary information early, they can begin to take that and conceive new ideas and practices to further the success of your organization.

Provide detailed transitions. Speaking of your successors, you should give them as detailed of a game plan as possible. The best way is to map everything you do as you do it, but fear not if you haven’t been. The most advantageous way to log the information is either through a le of documents in a cloud or ash drive, or the more traditional approach of a binder system. In this system it’s recommend-ed that you include a letter of encouragement, a timeline of events and when to do logistic work such a booking rooms, and any other relevant documents that you used during your term. By providing an eective transition your successor will be able to hit the ground running!
