Have you ever wondered what role your Progress Association plays in the community? You don't have to look too far to see, but you may not be aware of the pro-jects Progress has been involved with over time. Do you enjoy taking a walk along the Lomandra Trail for leisure or fitness or a ride on the Bike Track? planted with indigenous species of plants that are identified with de-scriptive signage - Progress projects.

Have you enjoyed a community or social gathering at Padnaindi Park? With free bbq use, seating, great lawned area surrounded by bespoke fence panels - another Progress project.

Have you admired the street banners depicting our herit-age and lifestyle? Yes, another one.

Do you look forward to catching up with friends just prior to Christmas at the Street Carnival. It's so good to take the kids, watch them enjoy themselves while you chat with friends and acquaintances, often comparing harvest and enjoying the festivities together with the best Christmas Lights competition. Organised and hosted by Progress.

Do you enjoy receiving “A Town like Blyth” newsletter or

the annual Community Calendar. You got it— Progress projects.

In fact there are so many projects and events that Pro-gress is involved with, we sometimes take their impact for granted.

All this is done with a dedicated committee of just 6 members, with the assistance of volunteers from the

community who are happy to donate some time to help. This is not something the committee do for their own personal gain, although there is a real sense of achievement in completing a project that benefits the community.

The ethos of the Blyth Progress Association is to foster and promote civic and community spirit, cultural and rec-reational activities in Blyth: We WELCOME new members and new ideas. We would love to support people with great ideas that are will-ing to drive any project that benefits the community and makes our town a better place to live.

IS THIS YOU?

Don't be shy! Come along to our AGM to see what goes on. We PROMISE that you won't be railroaded into a role unless you want one. Without new members we may not be able to continue into the future.

Around 10 years ago someone suggested that we proba-bly didn't need a Progress Association any longer ... So, imagine no Lomandra Trail, no Padnaindi Park, no town banners, no District School Site signs, no Padnaindi fence, no Tourist Info Board, no Street Carnival, no Aus-tralia Day service, no ANZAC service, No “A Town Like Blyth” Newsletter, no Blyth website, no forward planning for new projects such as the RSL Playground upgrade and shelter, or new town entrance signs to name a few. How's that looking?

So, why get involved, and be part of our SMALL COMMUNITY, BIG SPIRIT

A Grade 2006 & 2007 A & B Grade CATS REUNION at Blyth Community Hall on 29th July.

A Grade 2006 Prem-iership players—11 years on. with many still play-ing except for a few who have retired. Coach Bugsy Thom-son (far right)

A Grade 2007 Prem-iership players—10years on. Nearly all still playing for Blyth Snowtown . Coach Bugsy Thom-son.

B Grade 2007 Prem-iership players—10years on. Many retired!. Coach Gary Zweck. (far right)

BLYTH SNOWTOWN CATS: It is coming to the business end of the football season but there is still plenty of good footy to be played. Junior Colts under the coaching of Brett Bertelsmeier have made huge improvements this year and are excelling on the field cur-rently sitting 3rd on the ladder along with the B Grade. We have had lots of injuries this year both short term and long term and we wish all those still recovering all the best. It is great to have Ryan Darling back in the A grade team after his long term achilles injury. This year has certainly created lots of selection headaches for the coach-es. The sub minis numbers have grown this year, so much so, that we had to purchase another set of guernseys for them which they wore for the first time last Saturday. Several sponsors have enabled the junior play-ers to receive new t shirts. It is great to see them proudly wear them each Saturday. (right)

We have also made available guernseys for the up and com-ing stars of the future – Richards, Pratt, Clifford and Bigg families are wearing them. They are very cute! On Saturday night we celebrated the 10 Year Premiership Reunion of the 2007 A & B Grade Football, the A2 Netball and the 2006 A Football Premiership. It was great to see so many past and current players coming together to reminisce about those fantastic days when great memories were made. We have a much needed bye this coming weekend then on the 12 August we host our Sponsors at Blyth to say thank you for their ongoing support of our club. We are combining this with another reunion of the 1987 and 1997 Premier-ships. Celebrations will continue after the A grade match at the Blyth Oval. On 19 August is our Goods and Services Auction again at the Blyth Hall. Come along after footy to enjoy a great feed put on by the Social Committee and see the selection of items up for sale. This is our major fundraiser for the year so would be great if everyone can support the Club. If you have any items you wish to donate please see AJ Wood. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate all the successes that our Club has achieved over the past years so come along and join us at our functions and on game day.

Go Cats!

BLYTH BITS: Happy 102nd birthday to Mrs Mar-cia Roberts who celebrated with an afternoon of visitors on Monday 24th July. Marcia is Blyth’s most senior resident in Blyth and treated visitors with a delightful array of exquisite savouries and sweets and a cuppa in her fine china. Marcia commented, “Next year she will not bake so much food!.” Happy 50th birthday to Greg Walkley who celebrated with family.

Happy 40th to Mick Jamieson who celebrated with family and friends with a “Not so sur-prise birthday party.” Happy 30th to Joel Hitch for June 29th and celebrated with a party with family and friends.

Gracie Howard and Kane Steele wel-comed their second child Zarla Grace on 18th May and weigh-ing in at 8lb 5oz. A sister for Charlie.

(right) Zack and Crystal Zweck welcomed their first child, Arch-er Roy born on July 5th at Wallaroo Hospital. 8lb 7oz and a lengthy 56cm. Another grandy for Ian and Janet. Our sympathy is extended to Sue Arbon and family of the passing of husband Ross. Ross was a man of many talents and was always most willing to give a hand and his expertise was second to none. The community will sadly miss his talents and friendly smiling face.

Blyth welcomes another business to town with “Kristie Brackstone—Beauty Therapy.” Kristie has been involved in Beauty Therapy for nearly 10 years. She com-menced her study in Year 10 before starting her own small business in Snowtown while still do Year 12. Kristie completed her Diploma in Beauty Therapy at TAFE and went on to work in that industry for the next 5 1/2 years in Adelaide. In 2016 Kristie and her partner Nathan built a house in Blyth, had their first child and commenced her own busi-ness from home in Benbournie Estate.

Kristie specialises in Waxing, Tinting, Relaxing Massage and Spray tanning and is looking forward to expanding in the near future. Appointments are flexible and can be made via Kristie’s Facebook page. We wish Kristie all the best in her business venture. The Blyth Post Office remains a major sponsor of

“The Town Like Blyth” Newsletter.

The Blyth com-munity wel-comes Ian Wandel as Li-censee of the Blyth Post Of-fice. While Ian is not new to Blyth, he is looking for-ward to meeting the residents of Blyth and will be offering the same friendly and helpful service that we are all use to. Ian has completed his postal training with in Adelaide and 3 weeks in Clare officially took over on Wednesday 26th July. Michelle will be around for a few more weeks to en-sure Ian is briefed in all areas of the Post Office. Michelle will return from time to time when Ian himself takes off on holidays or bowling!! Ian will bring his “Travel Counsellor” business to the Post Office and looks forward to helping clients plan a holiday suited just for them. We wish Ian all the best for this new venture for him.

Kybunga Klippings Our thoughts are with the family of Gordon Smart, who passed away in July, age 74. Gordon and Mary moved to Blyth in 1977, and their children Tania and Craig attended Blyth Primary School before they moved out to the farm at Kybunga in 1979. Tania, Colin and Ben enjoyed their time at Kybunga Primary School before the family bought a farming property near Esperance in 1988. Gordon worked the farm and continued his love of driving trucks before retiring into Esperance. Best Wishes to Heath, Charmain, Sophie, Rohan and Wade Angel as they “head for the hills” and experience a change in climate and scenery. The family have been, are and will continue to be a special part of the Kybunga Commu-nity. Heath attended Kybunga Primary School, played in the Kybunga Junior Tennis Team and then while playing senior Kybunga Tennis – we would hear about the adventure of “his friend” Charmain as she was travelling overseas! A huge thankyou to Charmain and Heath for instigating the Kybunga Christmas Breakfast, a great chance to catch-up with our neighbours. Val and Denis McSkimmings have spent 7 weeks touring the North of Australia in the warmth and are asking them-selves why they decided to return home to the chill of Winter! Cheerio to former Kybunga residents Sue Clarke ( now Clare) and Andrew Clark ( now Riverton ) who have been on the sick list. Neighbouring properties to Tower Hill Rd are extremely grateful to have the road receive a facelift and return to a rubbled surface for moving machinery, instead of the Dry Weather Rd Only sign that has been in place for 2 years.

BLYTH FOOTBALL CLUB The Blyth Football Oval held their 3rd match for the season against South Clare with a large crowd getting their early be-fore the “dirty” day of wind and grit commenced. The Club continues to improve their facilities and at the busy bee prior to the day’s play, the oval and canteen was a hive of activity. Mowers and liners were going at full pace, the“footy park” seats were installed in the coaches box, 2 new fridges in the Bar and canteen have been installed, new steps to the time keepers box and new “Blind It” blinds have been installed on the outskirts of the shelter to keep it cosy during the day if need be, and in the evening. Well done to the Blyth Football club and to the Blyth Snowtown Football club for financially supporting these projects. The final match at Blyth will be on Saturday 12th August against Eudunda/Robertstown which will also include Spon-sors Day and 1987 Reunion of Blyth Football A Grade Prem-iers, 1997 Cats Senior Colts premiers and Blyth Netball Club 1987A1, A2, B1 and B2 Premiers.

BLYTH SNOWTOWN NETBALL CLUB We are on the home stretch towards finals and have some promising signs in the B1’s, B2’s and 15U’s and will contin-ue to give our best efforts to give all teams every chance to make finals. We have had another injury blow with our champion A2 playing coach Bernie Altmann tearing her achilles when we played BBH at Burra on the 22nd on June. She has had surgery and we wish her all the best for her recovery. Ber-nie had taken the record for most games played for Blyth Snowtown Netball club from Kate Wandel when she played her 294th game on the 17th of June but Kate has made a comeback to the courts and they are equal again (as at 29th July 2017). Congratulations to Sophie Lloyd (right) who played her 50th Cats senior game on the 17th of July! On Sunday 18th June Chloe Freebairn & Mia McCauley represented our club at an exclusive Thunderbirds Clinic in Ade-laide at the Priceline Stadium. Chloe & Mia joined 60 participants from around SA and enjoyed learning new netball skills from some of the best netballers in the country! The girls were thrilled to meet six Thunderbird

players, including Erin Bell!! (left) BSNC would like to thank the Mid North Motor Com-pany in Clare for providing our club with two invita-tions. Well done to the Cats Social Com-mittee who put on a brilliant Cats Fringe Festival at

the Blyth Hall on Saturday 24th June. Everyone enjoyed amazing pulled pork and beef brisket cooked by the talent-ed Jimmy Henderson and Reuben Ottens, were enter-tained by comedians Ben Dawson & Kehau Jackson and some fun games in between! We look forward to future events that the youthful Cats Social Committee organise for us! All NENA players in grades 5-12 were lucky enough to

have access to a fantastic clinic organised by Katie Liebelt, approximately 10 Cats players attended. The Balancing the Balls clinic is a combination of skills training from NENA’s 2017 Country Champs Reps and a well-being presentation with Linda Stanway, Mental Health Social Worker and was held in Clare on Friday 28th July. On Saturday 29th of July we celebrated the 2007 A2 prem-iership along with the A & B grade football premierships of 2006 & 2007. Bec Jamieson led the trip down memory lane for the 2007 A2 team and it was a great opportunity for them to catch-up and reminisce. A2 2007 PREMIERS—Coach Bec Jamieson (left)

2017—Some have retired, some have moved on and Kate Wandel continues to play and is continueing her BS most matches played record. Put this date in your diaries – Saturday 14th of October is the Cats 2017 Netball Trip. We are going on a wine tour around the Clare Valley in our best retro sports uniforms/outfits! Only 4 minor round games to go so make sure you get over to the courts to support our girls for the last few matches of the 2017 season! Go Cats! Tahlia Tilley, BSNC President,

BLYTH LUTHERAN CHURCH At last action has com-menced at the Blyth Lutheran Church build-ing with the foundation being laid for a new extension of a kitchen, meeting area and toilets.

The old red brick Hall was flattened in ap-prox 45 minutes and has now been levelled out with the area eventually being used as a parking area.

The congregation had a “Garage Sale” on Saturday 8th July to off load excess furniture including pews.. Unfortunately the new extension did not receive funds from Wakefield Regional Council Community Infrastructure Pro-gram, and so the congregation will continue to seek ways to raise extra funds to cover costs that have be incurred for the new extension. In the next 3 months repairs will continue to progress to the church building and Sunday school rooms, and if all goes well, will be completed towards the end of the year. The congregation continues with church services in the Blyth Hall Supper room and we are fortunate to have such a venue available to us on a weekly basis.

With 2 daughters working overseas it gave us a good excuse to travel again to visit them. Arriving in New York we were met by Kelly whom we hadn’t seen for 14 months. She left her job at Lake Muncho in Northern British Columbia to come to NY to see the sights with us. Niagara Falls was also on our bucket list so we joined a 2 days tour to visit the amazing falls which is a 6 hour bus trip from NY (below—lit up at night time). We left Kelly behind in NY to meet up with Maddy who joined us for 4 days taking leave from her job in Orlando. We visited all the major sights such as Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Time Square, the pro-duction of Lion King on Broadway, Gossip Girl sites, Wall Street and of course the 9/11 Memorial. After 8 days in NY we all flew to Orlando, Florida as Maddy had to resume working under the Disney Cultural Exchange Program at Magic Kingdom in Costume Operations. We had many fun-filled days visiting the Disney Parks going on all the rides and being big kids meeting the Disney Characters. While Maddy was working we took the opportunity to visit Space Kennedy Centre at Cape Canaveral viewing the shuttles at the museum that have been launched over the past years and taking in a bus tour of the launching pad. After 9 days in Orlando we farewelled Kelly who continues her working adventures in Vancouver, Canada, minus her luggage which included 9 tubes of vegemite and 2 tins of milo which the airline has still not found. Maddy went in another direction to meet Rachel Carling in London. We have now ticked a few more things of our bucket list.
