A n e w range of drives w h i c h c o m b i n e the advan tages o f three-phase ope ra t ion wi thou t the associa ted costs, cou ld offer great benefi ts for low p o w e r appl icat ions.

The Euro the rm 400V 601 ser ies inver te rs have been des igned for s imple lower p o w e r appl icat ions only, covering the range 0.37 to 2.2 kW, and capable of operat ing on ac suppl ies from 380 to 460V.They are available at pr ices previously only associated wi th the 230V single phase units and are relatively s imple to set up, having only 15 adjustable parameters . Each unit is designed to be used wi thout the need for extra equipment . For example , RF interference filters are built in as standard and each contains an internal dynamic braking switch for appl icat ions requiring rapid dece le ra t ion of the m o t o r or involving high inertia loads. The 601 range is pr imari ly a imed at the OEM market whe re design- ers are looking for the perfor- mance of 400 V three-phase fed drives but have previously been put off by the price. Generally, 400 V, three-phase fed drives are more versat i le and p rov ide a r educed moto r current wh ich offers savings in cabling and asso- c ia ted swi tch gear costs. However, for low p o w e r require- ments, 230 V single phase units have historically been more cost effective. This is because low p o w e r 400 V a.c. drives are often at the lower end of ranges wi th a scope up to several hundred kilo- watts. As such they carry a large control overhead, necessary for the higher power, more sophisti- cated applications, but was ted on 90% of low p o w e r uses.

A n e w b reed o f medium-vol tage AC drives has been launched by ABB Industrial Systems w h i c h offer a s t andard so lu t ion for p u m p speed control .

Covering 315 to 5000 kW, in voltages of 2.3, 3.3 and 4.16 kV, the ACS 1000 drive is des igned as a s tandard produc t , wh ich a l lows for s h o r t e r de l i ve ry t imes , fas ter ins ta l la t ion and commiss ion ing and lower pur- chase costs than the eng ineered drives tradit ionally available in this p o w e r range. A key target for the dr ive is retrofit applica- tions. The ease of des ign and instal lat ion, t o g e t h e r wi th its c o m p a c t size make the ACS 1000 ideal for exist ing plants, wh ich cannot be off-line for any p e r i o d o f t ime. In t e rms of p o w e r and voltage c o m p a r e d to size, it is the wor ld ' s smallest s t anda rd med ium-vo l t age AC drive. The drives combine ABB's d i rec t t o r q u e c o n t r o l (DTC) p l a t fo rm w i t h a b rand n e w p o w e r s e m i c o n d u c t o r switch- ing device - - the in tegra ted gate c ommuta to r thyr is tor (IGCT) - - r equ i r ing f ewer c o m p o n e n t s , also leading to greater reliability.

The ACS 1000 uses s tandard componen t s , sof tware tools and des ign p r i nc ip l e s as used in ABB's l o w vo l tage ACS 600 range, including the same opera- tor interface for ease of opera- t ion. The n e w dr ive enab les motors to run at very high effi- ciencies, typical ly 98%, wh ich can save users large amounts of money, and can be a more cost effective inves tment than low- voltage drives on appl icat ions w h e r e m e d i u m voltage drives are more suitable.
