A Note from the SHELTER

F r thos f y u wh aren't aware, th Huma.ne Soaety of th Ohio Vall yent r d a contest ba.ck in dober 2007 offering the grand prize a helt r make ver valued at up t one million dollars. Thi ontest mvolved hundreds upon hundred of hour I gged nl a computer in an ffort to earn points for our shelter, by over 2000 support

ers of the HSOV. I'm plea ed to be able to announce that we did in fact finish in the top twenty out of appr ximat ly nine hundred animal shelter aero s the United Stat .

On April 23, 200 , Richard Thompson and his crew of Z ot 0 Judg s vi it dour h Iter. We h d a pe tacular day. There were ver 200 people at the shelter durin hi visit showing upport. Mr. Thompson left here impress d, but not without providing me with an assignment which consisted f e ing how much labor voltmteerism we could confirm befor hand, in the event we were to be ho en as th mak over winner. 1 was extr mely proud to be able to email Mr. Thompson within a matter of days and report to him that all f the local union voted unanlmou ly to build the entire heller free of charge a their contribution.

Mr. John Anton, Marketing Oir ct T f r MARS Petcare, owner of Pedigree Food, was a member of the shelter tour as a supporting judge. 1 had the pleasure of spending •orne time speaking with J hn regarding the i ues we face in obtalnlng enough food to sustain us for any

lenglh of time at lh 5h Iter. He put me in conta t wilh their helter department, and we are currently working to implement a program ba ed on the redemption of

upons to n ure ur 5h It r d esn't run short on food. H wever, this program i not yet up and nmning, please c ntinue to donate dry dog and puppy fo d. Wehave ample cat and kitten f od.at lh pre ent time.

OUT h Her w h. n as one of the three finalists in the cant l, and on May 21, 2 08, I had the pleasure f appearing on th Mik and Jull t Show with Randy from Stray Rescue in L Louis, MO., an Linda from Jeffer on C unty PCA. Though w wer n't ch n as the winner, 1 will ay a I've said f r m nlhs We have alr ady w n. Our community is behind us, Mayor Mullen promised to have a sign erected n Route 7 0 w will be asier to locate, we have $26,000.00 as a r sult of the conlest, and Richard Thompson, founder of Zooto told me to make ure our building and trade v lunteers were till on board· with us and we will "see what we can do around back at y ur sh ter" .

This has b en a phenomenal experience, and with u t the I yalty of our upp Tters and dedication on behalf f th sh Her employes, it would have never been possible. Let's keep the momentum g ing. There are gr at things in tore for the future of the Humane S ciety of the Ohio Valley....." The Little Shelter That Could".

In dosing, please spay or neuter your pet ~ teach your children the importance of spayi.ng and neutering, and encourage family and friends to do the same.

Respectfully Submitted, Cheryl Ann Byers
