UNITED UNDER THE SAME FLAG

IL Y A 100 ANS…Nous célébrons le centenaire des Jeux Olympiques de 1920 qui se sont tenus à Anvers en Belgique. Évoquer au-jourd’hui cette édition n’a rien d’anodin car elle est orga-nisée après la Première Guerre mondiale, l’annulation des Jeux de Berlin 1916 et la pandémie de grippe espagnole!

Cette VIIe Olympiade est un appel à la paix, à l’union des nations sous le drapeau olympique qui flotte pour la pre-mière fois dans un stade.

100 YEARS AGO...This year marks the centenary of the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. There are relevant reasons for look-ing back at this particular edition today. It was after World War I, the cancellation of the Berlin 1916 Games and the outbreak of the Spanish flu pandemic.

The Games of the VII Olympiad were a call for peace, and for a coming together of nations under the Olympic flag that flew for the first time in a stadium.

...ET AUJOURD’HUICette année 1920 rappelle notre actualité… Depuis la pro-pagation du coronavirus, nous avons besoin de reprendre confiance dans l’avenir. Le confinement a donné lieu à une magnifique dynamique d’union et de solidarité à laquelle le Mouvement olympique participe avec la campagne digi-tale «#StayStrong #StayActive #StayHealthy» lancée après le report des Jeux de Tokyo 2020.

Le drapeau olympique continue de flotter dans le ciel, une invitation à contribuer à un monde meilleur par le sport.

...AND TODAYThe context in 1920 echoes our current situation. Since the spread of the coronavirus, people are looking to find re-newed confidence in the future. There have been remark-able demonstrations of unity and solidarity and the Olym-pic Movement has been a part of this, in particular through the “#StayStrong #StayActive #StayHealthy” digital cam-paign launched after the announcement of the postpone-ment of the Tokyo 2020 Games.

The Olympic flag continues to fly in the sky representing the contribution to building a better world through sport.

CÉLÉBRER LA RECONSTRUCTION

Les Jeux de la VIIe Olympiade sont attribués à Anvers, fai-sant suite à sa candidature déposée en 1914. C’est un hom-mage à une Belgique héroïque durant la Première Guerre mondiale.

ANCRER DES SYMBOLES

L’édition d’Anvers marque l’histoire des Jeux par l’intro-duction de rituels fortement liés aux valeurs; ils vont désor-mais rythmer les cérémonies d’ouverture.

LE DRAPEAU OLYMPIQUE: UNITÉ

Le drapeau exprime l’activité du Mouvement olympique, l’union des cinq continents et la rencontre des athlètes du monde entier (fig. 1).

LE SERMENT: FAIR-PLAY

Victor BOIN (BEL), prête serment au nom de tous les concurrents présents jurant de respecter les règles, les juges et leurs adversaires (fig. 2).

LES COLOMBES: PAIX

Libérées par des soldats, des colombes symbolisent le désir de paix du Mouvement olympique.

CELEBRATING RECONSTRUCTION

The Games of the VII Olympiad were awarded to Antwerp, which had submitted its candidature in 1914. This was a tribute to Belgium’s heroism during the First World War.

ESTABLISHING SYMBOLS

The Antwerp edition left its mark on Games history, as it saw the introduction of rituals strongly linked to the Olym-pic values, which would be incorporated into future open-ing ceremonies.

THE OLYMPIC FLAG FOR UNITY

The Olympic flag expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes worldwide (fig. 1).

OATH: FAIR PLAY

Victor BOIN (BEL) took an oath on behalf of all the compet-itors, promising to respect the rules, judges and opponents (fig 2).

DOVES: PEACE

Doves were released by soldiers, symbolising the Olympic Movement’s role as a force for peace.

La guerre faisant rage, impossible d’organiser les Jeux pré-vus en 1916 à Berlin (fig. 4).

1918 – 1919LA GRIPPE ESPAGNOLE

Comme si la guerre ne suffit pas, une pandémie grippale touche de nombreux pays (fig. 5).

2019 – 2020COVID-19

Le 11 mars 2020, l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) déclare l’état de pandémie dû à une nouvelle forme de co-ronavirus: la COVID-19 (fig. 6).

2020TOKYO 2020JO REPORTÉS!

Le 24 mars 2020, le président du CIO Thomas Bach et le premier ministre japonais Abe Shinzo décident de reporter les Jeux de la XXXIIe Olympiade à l’été 2021 (fig. 7).

A DARK TIME1914 – 1918FROM SARAJEVO TO THE TRENCHES

Initially involving the European powers, the conflict quick-ly spread to several continents and turned into a World War (fig. 3).

1916OLYMPIC GAMES BERLIN 1916 CANCELLED!

With war raging, it was impossible to stage the Games, which had been due to take place in Berlin in 1916 (fig. 4).

1918 – 1919SPANISH FLU

To make matters worse, a flu pandemic also spread throughout the world during the war (fig 5).

2019 – 2020COVID-19

On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic due to the outbreak of a novel coro-navirus: COVID-19 (fig. 6).

2020TOKYO 2020 GAMES POSTPONED!

On 24 March 2020, the IOC President, Thomas Bach, and the Japanese Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo, announced the postponement of the Games of the XXXII Olympiad to the summer of 2021 (fig. 7).

Personnes connues ou anonymes, hier comme au-jourd’hui, ils ont été nombreux à se relever du choc subit par la guerre ou la maladie.

1914 – 1918GRIPPE ESPAGNOLE

Le fonctionnement du CIO est également touché, comme le témoigne cette lettre du 4 novembre 1918 du Baron de Coubertin au Baron de Blonay (fig.8).

«Les conférences de l’Institut (Olympique) sont ajournées au 1er février. À vrai dire, je ne sais pas si l’état sanitaire sera meilleur mais on sera habitué!»

C’est en petite forme que le cycliste belge Philippe THYS participe à un critérium au Parc des Princes, à Paris. «Le champion, …, n’a pu donner la mesure de ses excellents moyens», raconte le quotidien sportif L’Auto du 1er juillet 1918, à propos du triple vainqueur du Tour de France. En cause, «cette grippe qui grandit» (fig. 9).

2019 – 2020COVID-19

Pour s’habituer aux conditions de compétitions des Jeux de Mexico 68, le rameur britannique Kenneth DWAN, s’entraîne intensément avec peu d’oxygène. Lorsqu’en mars 2020 il contracte la COVID-19 et que ses poumons n’acceptent pas l’oxygène qu’on leur insuffle, Kenneth se souvient alors de ses séances d’entraînements en vue des JO (fig. 10).

RESILIENCEOVERCOME ADVERSITY

Many people in the past and present, both well-known and anonymous, have survived the trau-mas of war and illnesses.

1914 – 1918SPANISH FLU

IOC operations were also affected by the flu pandemic, as revealed by this letter sent by Baron de Coubertin to Baron de Blonay on 4 November 1918 (fig. 8).

“The conferences of the [Olympic] Institut have been de-ferred until 1 February. In all honesty, I do not know wheth-er the health situation will be better, but we shall at least be accustomed to it!”

In a poor physical condition, the Belgian cyclist Philippe THYS, participated in a closed-circuit criterium at the Parc des Princes, Paris. “The champion could not show the ex-tent of his excellent abilities,” reported daily sports newspa-per L’Auto of the three-time Tour de France winner in its 1 July 1918 edition. It cited the “growing” spread of the flu as the reason (fig. 9).

2019 – 2020COVID-19

To get used to the conditions in which he would have to compete at the Mexico 1968 Games, British rower Kenneth DWAN underwent intensive low-oxygen training. When he contracted COVID-19 in March 2020 and his lungs were initially not responding to the oxygen he was being fed, he cast his mind back to his experiences in those Olympic training sessions (fig. 10).

Durant la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, le Français Louis Pasteur, chimiste de formation, démontre que la propreté permet d’éradiquer certaines maladies (fig. 11).

BOUGER!

Les idées s’enchaînent: tout ne passe pas que par le savon! L’hygiène individuelle commence par une vie saine et ac-tive. L’exercice physique est dans tous les esprits et plusieurs théoriciens développent différents types de gymnastique, embryons de ce que nous connaissons aujourd’hui (fig 12).

LA MÉTHODE SUÉDOISE

Le Suédois Per Henrik Ling dans son ouvrage Principe de base de la gymnastique insiste sur le fait que les mouve-ments doivent être appropriés au développement physique du sujet; l’aspect mental est également pris en compte: Un homme à l’avant-garde!

Le système Ling se développe dans les pays scandinaves jusqu’au milieu du XXe  siècle. L’harmonie du corps et l’équilibre de l’espritsont les composantes d’une bonne santé peu importe l’âge! (fig 13)

#STAYACTIVELATE 19th BEGINNING 20th CENTURY THANK YOU PASTEUR!

In the second half of the 19th century, French chemist Louis Pasteur demonstrated that cleanliness could help to eradi-cate certain diseases (fig 11).

GET ACTIVE!

New ideas continued to emerge. Soap was not the be-all and end-all; it was established that personal hygiene began with a healthy, active lifestyle. Physical exercise was at the forefront of such thinking, and several academics devel-oped different forms of gymnastics. These would evolve into the disciplines we recognise today (fig. 12).

THE SWEDISH METHOD

In his work The Basic Principles of Gymnastics, Per Hen-rik Ling from Sweden stressed that movements should be tailored to the physical development of the individual in question, and also took mental aspects into consideration. He was a man ahead of his time!

The Ling system flourished in Scandinavia until the mid-20th century. The harmony of body and balance of mind came to be seen as the key components of good health, re-gardless of age! (fig. 13)

XXIe SIÈCLEFIT ONLINE

Le rameur Jamie COPUS (GBR) s’entraîne dans les champs près de sa maison à Oxford (fig. 14).

L’escrimeuse Katharine HOLMES (USA) s’entraîne avec son petit ami Tyler CHRISTENSEN à son domicile dans le New Jersey (fig. 15).

SOLIDAIRITÉ

Si 2021 est dans la tête de tous les olympiens, ils n’en ou-blient pas pour autant les personnes qui sont en première ligne contre la pandémie.

La nageuse Federica PELLEGRINI (ITA) récolte 66 000€ pour un hôpital de Bergame qui traite les patients atteints de COVID-19 grâce à une vente aux enchères en direct de certains de ses équipements sportifs (fig. 16).

21st CENTURYPROMOTING FITNESS ONLINE

The Olympic Movement, with the involvement of many athletes, has been a part of the joint effort in the current sit-uation through its “#StayStrong #StayActive #StayHealthy” digital campaign. This campaign offers home workouts and training routines that anyone can try – ranging from the basic to the highly creative (your cat will do just fine if you don’t have any dumbbells) – as well as nutritional ad-vice and, above all, inspirations to keep doing sport.

SOLIDARITY

While 2021 is now in the minds of Olympians everywhere, they have not forgotten those who are on the front line in the fight against the pandemic.

Swimmer Federica PELLEGRINI (ITA) raised EUR 66,000 for a hospital in Bergamo treating COVID-19 patients by selling some of her sports equipment in a live auction (fig. 16).

LES HÉROS DE L’ÉPOQUE1914 – 1918AU FRONT

Des centaines d’athlètes et d’olympiens sont mobilisés pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Certains auront la chance de rentrer; d’autres périront au champ d’honneur.

LES SURVIVANTS

Albert HILL (GBR) sert dans la Royal British Air Force. HILL est médaillé d’or du 800 m et du 1500 m aux Jeux d’Anvers (fig. 17).

Artilleur et haltérophile émérite, Ernest CADINE (FRA) rem-porte la médaille d’or en poids mi-lourds aux Jeux d’Anvers (fig. 18).

LES DISPARUS

Sportif accompli en rugby, football et cyclisme, Roland GARROS (FRA) est abattu en vol le 8 octobre 1918 (fig. 19).

Jean BOUIN (FRA) participe aux Jeux de Londres (1908) et de Stockholm (1912) en athlétisme. Il tombe au champ d’honneur en 1914 (fig. 20).

LE PERSONNEL SOIGNANT DÉJÀ À L’OEUVRE

Les femmes sont nombreuses à se mobiliser dans le sec-teur médical. Sans elles, le nombre de morts aurait été su-périeur à ce qu’il a été.

Athlète polyvalente, inventrice, journaliste, pilote brevetée, Marie MARVINGT (FRA) s’engage dans la Grande Guerre comme «poilue» avant d’être démasquée. Infirmière diplô-mée, elle est envoyée dans les Dolomites où elle secourt les blessés (fig. 21).

HEROES OF THEIR TIME1914 – 1918ON THE FRONT

Hundreds of athletes and Olympians enlisted during the First World War. While some were lucky enough to return, others perished on the battlefield.

SURVIVORS

Albert HILL (GBR) served in the British Royal Flying Corps. Hill was a gold medallist in the 800m and 1,500m at the Antwerp Games (fig. 17).

An artilleryman and elite weightlifter, Ernest CADINE (FRA) won the gold medal in the light heavyweight event at the Antwerp Games (fig.18).

THE FALLEN

An accomplished rugby player, footballer and cyclist, Ro-land GARROS (FRA) was shot down in air combat on 8 Oc-tober 1918 (fig. 19).

MEDICAL WORKERS IN ACTION

Jean BOUIN (FRA) competed in athletics at the Games in London (1908) and Stockholm (1912). He died on the battle-field in 1914 (fig. 20).

Many women served as medical workers during the war. Without them, the death toll would had been even higher.

A multi-talented athlete, inventor, journalist and pilot, Ma-rie MARVINGT (FRA) disguised herself as a male soldier to enlist in the Great War, before being found out. A qualified nurse, she was subsequently sent to the Dolomites, where she tended to the wounded (fig. 21).

2019 – 2020LES BLOUSES BLANCHES TOUJOURS EN ACTION

Les histoires de 14-18 raisonnent avec celles de bon nombre d’athlètes médecins ou infirmières en première ligne pen-dant la pandémie de la COVID-19.

Gardienne de l’équipe des Pays-Bas en hockey sur gazon, médaillée d’or aux Jeux de Londres en 2012 et d’argent aux Jeux de Rio en 2016, Joyce SOMBROEK (NED) est médecin à Amsterdam (fig. 22).

Médaillé d’or aux Jeux de Rio en 2016, le rameur Lucas TRAMÈR (SUI) est médecin urgentiste à Bâle (fig. 23).

SIMPLEMENT ESSENTIELS

Ils sont vendeurs, caissiers, techniciens de surface et mal-gré les risques de contamination, permettent à la popula-tion de se nourrir et de se soigner.

Bakary MEÏTÉ (FRA), rugbyman, est agent d’entretien bé-névole dans un hôpital parisien (fig. 24).

2019 – 2020HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN ACTION

The stories from 1914-1918 echo those of many athletes who are also doctors or nurses and are serving on the front line during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A gold medallist at London 2012 and silver medallist at Rio 2016 as the goalkeeper for the Dutch field hockey team, Joyce SOMBROEK (NED) works as a doctor in Amsterdam (fig. 22).

A gold medallist at the Rio 2016 Games, rower Lucas TRA-MÈR (SUI) works as an A&E doctor in Basel (fig. 23).

ESSENTIAL SERVICES

Despite the risks of infection, retail workers, checkout as-sistants and cleaning staff have been working to ensure that people can buy food and stay safe.

Rugby player Bakary MEÏTÉ (FRA) has been volunteering as a cleaner in a Parisian hospital (fig. 24).

...ET DEMAIN ?Here We GoLes Jeux Olympiques n’ont jamais été reportés auparavant. Pour assurer le succès des Jeux de Tokyo 2020, un comité directeur conjoint a été créé, au sein duquel Tokyo 2020 et le CIO ont mis en place leurs propres groupes de travail res-pectifs: le groupe de travail «Here we go» du côté du CIO, et le groupe de travail «New Launch» du côté de Tokyo 2020. Ils travaillent ensemble pour créer une structure capable de relever les défis auxquels ils pourraient être confrontés à l’horizon 2021.

To ensure the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games, a Joint Steering Committee was created, in which Tokyo 2020 and the IOC established their own respective task forces: the “Here we go” Task Force on the IOC side, and the “New Launch” Task Force on the Tokyo 2020 side. They are wor-king together to create a structure capable of overcoming the challenges they could face in the lead-up to 2021.
