Please contact [email protected] DECEMBER 2010 ANTI – CORRUPTION International Anti-Corruption Day The Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on anti-corruption in collaboration with UNDP and UNODC organized a 2 day programme to mark the International Anti- Corruption day in Nigeria. The 2 day programme comprised of an Anti-Corruption rally on the 8th and a Grand Finale event on 9 December. Representatives of the IATT (which comprises of 20 anti- corruption agencies in Nigeria), Federal Ministries, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), various Civil Society Organizations, Students, the diplomatic community, UNDP and UNODC participated in both events. The theme for the 2010 Anti- Corruption Day in Nigeria was “Good Strategy 4 Zero Corruption”. It focused on creating greater public awareness of and engagement in the development of a National Corruption Strategy to Combat Corruption that is currently being prepared under the lead of the IATT. The Grand Finale event was presided over by the Chairman of the IATT, Prof. H.A. Asobie who emphasized that the time had come for everybody to think outside the box as corruption in Nigeria had multiplied, despite all efforts by Government and non-governmental stakeholders to combat corruption. In his key note address, the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Bello Adoke, assured Nigerians that the Government of President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was strongly committed to the fight against corruption and will make the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy its priority. UNODC‘s Country Representative, Ms. Dagmar Thomas emphasized that “the UN system will continue to support Nigeria and the IATT in the implementation of the strategy and in the development of a robust system of monitoring and evaluation, focusing in particular on providing civil society and the private sector with a voice, in the process of helping Government to achieve the objectives as spelt out in the Strategy. For Further details, please contact: [email protected] and [email protected] JUSTICE SECTOR REFORM Bayelsa State launches Action Plan for Justice Sector Reform On 7-8 December, over 170 stakeholders operating in the justice sector, the civil society, community leaders and the media gathered at a Justice Sector stakeholders meeting in Yenagoa to develop and adopt a comprehensive State Action Plan for Justice Sector Reform. For two days UNODC, UNICEF and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) worked jointly with all relevant stakeholders in designing and integrated and comprehensive strategy to enhance access to justice, increase timeliness and quality of justice delivery, strengthen integrity, transparency, impartiality and independence of the courts, and improve coordination among justice sector stakeholders. The workshop marked the launch of the judicial component of the project NGA T97 “ Partnership in the Bayelsa Expenditure and Income Transparency Initiative (BEITI) and the Judicial Integrity Action Programme (JIA)” funded by the Royal Government of The Netherlands. International Anti-Corruption Day

The Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on anti-corruption in
