    AntarcticaAn empty continent!!!

    Antarctica: The frozen Kingdom

Over 98% of Antarctica is covered by the unbroken polar ice sheet. If the ice sheet melted, the oceans would rise by around 65 meters. The size of the Antarctic ice sheet doubles everywinter. The elevation at the South Pole is 9300 feet (2835m), although the bedrock is only

100 feet (30m) above sea level. It is the driest and coldest place on earth. The lowestrecorded temperature in history is -128 o F (-89 o C). Antarctica is the 5 th largest continent witha population of 0 (zero). Antarctica is the only continent with no countries. Samples of iceextracted from the ice sheet give scientists valuable information about the earths climatefrom millions of years ago. Antarctica is the only continent with no indigenous species ofanimals. However, some animals, like seals, that inhabit the oceans surrounding Antarcticamay get out of the water and rest on the ice when the feel tired!

Geography: Antarctica is the icy continent at the South Pole. It is covered bypermafrost (permanently frozen ground), is surrounded by water, and is about 1 1/2times larger than the United States. The world's largest desert is on Antarctica. 98% ofthe land is covered with ice sheet; the remaining 2% of land of rock. Antarctica has about87% of the world's ice.

Climate: The South Pole is the coldest, windiest, and driest place on Earth. The coldesttemperature ever recorded on Earth was at the South Pole; it reached -128.6F (-88.0C)!On average, most of Antarctica gets less than 2 inches of snow fall each year.

People: Although scientific expeditions visit Antarctica, there are no permanent humanresidents (because of the extreme weather, which includes freezing temperatures, strongwinds, and blizzards). There are about 4,000 seasonal visitors to Antarctica.

Location: Antarctica hasn't always been located at the South Pole. It has drifted, like theother continents, and has ranged in location from the Equator (about 500 million yearsago) to the South Pole. During the time of the dinosaurs (about 65 million to 248 millionyears ago), Antarctica was more temperate and home to dinosaurs and many other lifeforms. Now, there is no indigenous life.

    Questions:

    1. How was the weather in Antarctica during the time of the dinosaurs ? ________________________________________________________________________2. Is there some life in Antarctica now ? _____________________________3. How many oceans can we see on the map, surrounding Antarctica ?

________________________________________________________________________4. Is Antarctica near North America ? _____________________________5. Has Antarctica ranged in location from the Equator to the North Pole ?

________________________________________________________________________6. How many visitors are there to Antarctica ? ________________________________7. Are there permanent human residents ? ___________________________________8. Why are there no permanent human residents ? _____________________________9. Does most of Antartica get less than 2 inches of snow fall each year ?

_________________________________________________________________________ 10. Has Antarctica always been located at the South Pole ?
