ANSYS BELGIUM TRAINING GUIDE
Welcome to ANSYS Belgium’s training guide. In addition to the quality of the code, it is the
training and support services we provide that have made ANSYS® the world leader it is today.
The ANSYS® Workbench™ platform is the
framework upon which the industry’s broadest
and deepest suite of advanced engineering
simulation technology is built. An innovative
project schematic view ties together the
entire simulation process, guiding the user
through even more complex multiphysics

PrerequisitesThe course assumes you have previous
experience of using ANSYS® POLYFLOW®.
Course objectivesT h i s c o u r s e i s a c o m p r e h e n s i v e
introduction to the numerical simulation
of extrusion and die design using ANSYS®
POLYFLOW®. It is essentially devoted to 2-D
and 3-D free surface flow problems of non-
Newtonian inelastic fluids.
We elaborate on the concept of free
surface in extrusion and the associated
numerical tools: initial conditions, direction
of motion, corner strategy (for 3-D free
surfaces), fixed and moving domains, re-
meshing algorithms, direct and inverse
extrusion problems.
We show how to define a simple problem
at the outset and how to handle non-
linearities through appropriate evolution
parameters . S e vera l 2 -D and 3-D
applications of technical importance are
discussed while sample problems are
solved by the trainees at a workstation.
Extrusion I Advanced ANSYS® POLYFLOW® - 1 day
PrerequisitesThe course assumes you have previous
experience of using ANSYS® POLYFLOW®.
Course objectivesThe purpose of this session is to introduce
ANSYS® POLYFLOW® blow molding
module. Models and numerical tools
will be presented. Several flow models
are available: 2-D and 3-D models with
calculation through the thickness and thin
shell elements as well. Their advantages
and limitations will be discussed. The most
important numerical tools will also be
shown: (i) the remeshing techniques with
their usage and (ii) the contact algorithm
with its geometric consequences.
The theoretical presentation is followed
by suggested exercises solved on
the computer, and which show the
various capabilities of these software
developments. During the exercises,
important features such as parison
extrusion, pinch-off, inflation and cooling
may be investigated. Numerical results will
be analysed and commented on.
Blow molding I Advanced ANSYS® POLYFLOW® - 1 day
Parison programming and extrusion blow molding using shell elements
Extrusion of a viscoelastic food material
2120
PrerequisitesThe course assumes you have previous
experience of using ANSYS® POLYFLOW®.
Course objectivesThis course is a comprehensive introduction
to the modeling and numerical simulation
of viscoelastic flows with the ANSYS®
POLYFLOW® software.
We introduce and comment on some
well-known viscoelastic phenomena,
such as the Weissenberg effect or the
swelling at die exit. Next, modeling
tools are introduced: Newtonian and
generalized Newtonian fluid models as
well as viscoelastic models. The properties
of the several models are discussed. The
numerical treatment is also introduced.
Finally, questions such as selection of
a model and definition of a flow case
are presented, as well as a few typical
applications. Exercises are solved by the
attendees on a workstation.
Viscoelastic I Advanced ANSYS® POLYFLOW® - 1 day
PrerequisitesThe course assumes you have previous
experience of using ANSYS® POLYFLOW®.
Course objectivesIn this training course, we will present
the capabilities of ANSYS® POLYFLOW®
with regards to solving complex flows
involving highly non-linear rheological
and thermal behaviors and how you
can take advantage of those results to
express them into an industrial and usable
language. Historically, this Polystat
module was developed to provide a
quantitative evaluation of a given mixing
process (laminar mixing, dispersion, and
segregation scale). However, as shown in
this session, the interest of this module
(a true statistical toolbox) is much larger:
determination of the RTD (residence time
distribution), the thermal degradation of a
polymer, among others.
After a brief theoretical introduction of
the mathematical tools, three tutorials
are analyzed in details to give a complete
overview of these Polystat module
capabilities: comparison of two mixers,
analysis of a glass furnac and post-processing
of an extrusion process simulation.
