Wherry 9:00 AM Service Guest Speaker First Time Here? Okay, if this is your first time at St. Andrew By-The-Sea Bluffton Campus we’re guessing you might be a bit anxious. We get it. Depending on your previous experience with church (or what you’ve heard about church), you might be worrying about any number of things: feeling judged, feeling pressured to empty your wallet, feeling like everyone’s mentally clocking the speed at which you’re able to find any given Bible verse. May we offer a suggestion? Relax. We’re not going to judge you, and we don’t want your account numbers. And you don’t even have to own a Bible. (Although if you want one, they are available to you for free.) Our deepest desire is to meet you wherever you are on your spiritual journey, no matter where that might be, and help you take your next step. And thanks for wearing a name tag, so we can call you by name. If you have any questions about what you hear today, or about God, faith, or anything on your mind — our pastor, staff as well as lay members are available after every service. A Vision of a Plumb Line 7 This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. 8 And the LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; 9 the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” 10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos has said, “‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.’” 12 And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, 13 but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctu- ary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.” 14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. 15 But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 Now therefore hear the word of the LORD. “You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore thus says the LORD: “‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’” (Amos 7:7-17) ESV Please read Amos 7:7-9: The sentiment of weighing and measuring guides the princi- ple of the brief visionary report in this passage where God shows Amos a "plumb line," a piece of lead or tin hanging from a string used to measure the straightness of a recently constructed wall. In essence, God has measured the northern kingdom of Israel and found the nation wanting. Do you ever feel as if God weighs and measures you? What are things we do and things we don’t do that should be measured by God? How does God measure us??? If God finds us lacking how should we respond? Please read Amos 7:10-15. Do you think God “measures” our response to evil in this world? If so, how? What are some examples of this response in scripture? Please read over Luke 10:25-37: Where do you find yourself in the parable of the good samaritan? In other words are you the one injured, those who neglect the one injured or are you the good samaritan? Where is Jesus in this parable? What are the similarities and the differences between our Amos passage and our Luke passage?

First Time Here? Okay, if this is your first time at St. Andrew By-The-Sea Bluffton Campus we’re guessing you might be a bit anxious. We get it. Depending on your previous experience with church (or what you’ve heard about church), you might be worrying about any number of things: feeling judged, feeling pressured to empty your wallet, feeling like everyone’s mentally clocking the speed at which you’re able to find any given Bible verse.
