APPLICATION OF ZYCOSIL FOR
WATER PROOFING
PRESENTED BY-: ANSHUL OJHA ID No. 40325
• Zycosil is the only water soluble product in the world that is used for waterproofing of masonry building materials.
• A new generation of nano technology developed for water proofing and has :
Thermal resistance
UV resistance
An ability to withstand wind erosion due to its nano size
Penetrative power.
Introduction
• A Water Soluble, Penetrating, Water Repellent for use on Cementitious Materials such as Brick, Concrete, Stone, Tile, Grout, Mortar and Plaster.
• Provides 20 plus year protection
• Eco Friendly and easy to use
• Better value compared to alternative technologies
• Sold in concentrated form / just add water and apply
• International Patents Issued 2009
Water- The great destroyer
Moisture damage caused by a loss of adhesion , commonly referred to as “stripping” of aggregates.
It results in both structural as well as aesthetic damages
AESTHETIC DAMAGES (both internal & external) such as:
Efflorescence
Formations of blisters (surface peel off)
Corrosion
Fungus formation
STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DUE TO WATER SEEPAGE:
Freezing/ thawing.
Carbonation/ acid rain
ASR ( alkaline silica reaction)
DAMAGES TO PAVEMENT SURFACES:
Stripping of aggregates.
Heavy traffic on a moisture-weakened pavement can result in premature rutting or fatigue cracking .
presence of moisture can accelerate the formation of potholes.
Aesthetic Damage
I) Internally
- Efflorescence
- Paint Peel Off/ Blisters
II) Externally
- Fungus
- Mold (Mildew)
- Dirt Pick Up
Structural Damage From Water Seepage• Alkaline Silica Reaction (ASR) - occurs when water enters the highly alkaline environment of concrete. The result is the formation of a gel that expands creating force that subsequently creates cracks in concrete
• Freeze & Thaw – the expansion of water in concrete during freeze cycle creates force and the contraction during thaw creates voids. The results are cracked concrete
• Carbonation - carbon dioxide in the ambient air penetrates the concrete and reacts with hydroxides in cement. The reaction changes the ph within concrete. High ph corrodes steel reinforcement in concrete
• Sulphate Attack – Degredation of portland cement due to the exposure of sulphate salts that are present in soils, groundwater, and fertilizers, etc.
Structural Damage From Water Seepage
Corrosion, Alkaline Silica Reaction, Freezing & Thawing, Premature Aging, Carbonation, Sulphate Attack
The presence of water is the common component in all of these processes.

ZYCOSIL NANOTECHNOLOGY
• Any technology based on particles size less than 10 ηm is considered Nano Technology.• Zycosil molecule when dissolved in solvent has estimated size of 3-6 ηm.• Most pavement materials contain hydroxyl (OH) groups. These OH groups can chemically react with alkoxy groups of Silane to form permanent, mother nature’s strongest siloxane bonds.
• These types of products impart water repellency by modifying surface characteristics from hydrophilic to hydrophobic.• Permanent water repellent layer on all types of soils, aggregates and other inorganic road construction materials.• The technology addresses the critical subsurface drainage problems in road making and repairs.• Zycosil’s reactive bonding ability with the aggregates and asphalt helps to eliminate stripping of aggregates t a great extent.

Zycosil Limitations
Cannot be applied on acrylic paint
Cannot seal major cracks
Once diluted, it’s best used within 48 hrs
Will not allow re-plastering and fixation of tiles, stones, granites etc.
It cannot be applied if: Ambient temperature is below 10º C or above 50ºC Rain is expected within 2 hours following the application. Precipitation has occurred within 24 hours prior to application. High winds or other conditions prevent proper application and overspray that may have an adverse effect on surrounding materials
Solutions to Zycosil Limitations
Use Zycoprime on a Zycosil treated surface, prior to Cladding of Tiles, Granites etc.
Acrylic paint must be removed prior to application of Zycosil
Affordability
Application Costs - Diluted Zycosil is comparable in price to most film formers.
(Most film formers only provide 1 - 3 year performance)
Application Costs - Diluted Zycosil is roughly 30% to 50% lower than most Solvent / Silane based products.
(Most Solvent products offer maximum 5-10 year warranties)

CONCLUSION
Since this technology is economical than the currently used ones and it is also eco-friendly , therefore extensive work for the development of this technology should be undertaken .
Efforts should be made for the application of zycosil on a wider temoerature range for better application
