RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Dissertation: “Migration and the Evolving Mediascape: New Media, Identity and the Transnational Politics of the Indian Diaspora” (Fall, 2010 - present) Committee Chair: Prof. Taylor Boas, Dept. of Political Science, Boston University, Boston, MA

Investigation concentrates on the role of new media—social media in particular—with respect to participation by subgroups of the Indian diaspora in the political life of their home country and the contours of their transnational civic bonds. Original data consists of interviews, focus groups, surveys and experimental treatments.

Social Media and Political Engagement (Fall, 2012 - present) Research Assistant to Prof. James Katz, Division of Emerging Media Studies, Boston University, Boston, MA

Research focuses on the adoption and evolution of social media technology by Presidential campaigns and administrations, and the promises and limits of social media platforms to enable public participation in political decision-making processes. Research has resulted in the completion of a published book: Katz, Barris and Jain, The Social Media President: Barack Obama and the Politics of Digital Engagement (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013). Current follow-up research examines the dynamics of social media engagement by all 50 United States governors. Project involves conducting original data collection, content analysis and the supervision of two undergraduate research assistants.

Boston Public Schools—Greater Egleston High School, Roxbury, MA (2006 – 2008) History & Government Teacher Greater Egleston Community High School is a small urban pilot school within the Boston public schools network. The student population is ethnically, racially and socioeconomically diverse. Taught four classes for which I independently designed curricula: U.S. History, World History, Government & Economics, and Historical Literature. Teacher & Site Director, Credit Recovery Program Taught and co-administrated a summer program designed to help lagging and lapsed students make up missing coursework and earn their high school diplomas. Teaching responsibilities included coverage of not only history and social studies, but math, ELA and science curricula as well. Administrative responsibilities included intake of students, management of academic pathways, coordination with college and financial aid counselors, and collaboration with District officials. Conducted basic data tracking and research to determine effectiveness of the program in its pilot year. Since its inception, this program has grown to include hundreds of students across the District.

WORK EXPERIENCE & LEADERSHIP Boston Public Schools—Greater Egleston High School Governing Board, Roxbury, MA (2008 – present) Co-Chair, Governing Board All Pilot Schools within the Boston school district are overseen by independent governing boards. Boards are given broad oversight authority on matters of hiring, staffing, scheduling, crisis management, and school performance. Additionally, the Board is tasked with managing partnerships with District offices, parents, neighborhood organizations and partners in the higher education and business communities. Boston Public Schools—Office of Curriculum and Instruction, Boston, MA (2008 – 2012) Teaching American History (TAH) Program Consultant The TAH Program provided professional development opportunities to social studies teachers across the district through high-level lectures and seminars, field visits and lesson planning workshops. Responsibilities also included the planning and development of history curricula, the writing of district-wide midterm and final examinations, the creation of MCAS preparation materials for educators, and grant writing to support the entire program. Successful grant writing resulted in the winning of two 3-year grants worth approximately $1 Million each. Full scholarship and a teaching fellowship for doctoral studies at Boston University (approx. $190,000 to date) Boston Public Schools Teaching American History (TAH) Grant (2012 – 2015) (Funding Cut by Act of Congress)

Assisted with the writing of an extension of a prior TAH Grant. Funding for TAH, including winning grant applications, was terminated by the United States House of Representatives in 2012. (approx. $1 Million).

Assisted with the writing of a United States Department of Education grant that provided funding and materials toward the professional development of history and civics educators in the Boston Public Schools (approx. $1 Million).

Individually authored a grant proposal to the Digital Arts Alliance and Facing History And Ourselves, a non-profit education consortium allied with the Boston Public Schools, for laptops, software and workshop training in history and humanities curricula (approx. $50,000).
