At the risk of sounding overly simplistic, can we really aspire to more than Mary and the shepherds? What if we approached 2018 with a deliberate intention to follow their lead? How might the new year seem very different if we treasured up the glory of the incarnation and pondered it in our hearts in the coming months? What if we went back to our work and the routine of normal life glorifying and praising God for the birth of our Savior? Pondering God’s love for me in sending Jesus would go a long way to dispelling my fears and anxieties. Remembering that he came bringing peace and goodwill to me would surely help to reorient my priorities and determine what matters most. And what would my friends, family, and coworkers conclude if I suddenly stopped working for the weekend and really started rejoicing? Life looks very different when we stop pushing Jesus to the edges of our lives and we start invite him into our hearts, living rooms and workspace! Let’s do that this year!

Another Christmas Come and Gone…Now What?

    By Rev. Dr. Jeff Morrison

16And (the shepherds) went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17And when

they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18And all who heard it

wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her

heart. 20And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been

    told them.

    -- Luke 2:16-20

Every year we all spend so much energy leading up to the Advent and Christmas season. We’re relentless

in our preparations - we shop, we cook, we have parties, we deliver gifts to people we love. Throughout the weeks

our expectations build and anticipation grows and then suddenly, seemingly without warning, it’s over. What are

we to do in the wake of Christmas and the turning of the calendar to the New Year?

Some of us mop our brow, give a sigh of relief, and offer a prayer of thanksgiving for a return to normal

life and a predictable schedule. But for many of us the weeks following the holiday can seem rather melancholy

and somber. We look back longingly on the celebrations and find the deepening winter to be an emotional

challenge. That was my perspective for years. And then one day I decided to revisit the nativity and see what I

may have overlooked. What I discovered there has changed my thinking about life after Christmas.

At the first Christmas, angels appeared to shepherds watching their flocks by night. Those herald angels

sang a song of highest praise, a song that launched the shepherds out of the fields and into Bethlehem to find the

holy family and the newborn King. But the story continues, doesn’t it? What happens after the night of Jesus’

birth? “Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying

and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.” In other words, Mary continued to

think deeply about what had transpired and the shepherds went back to work with a transformed outlook and

    focus.

At the risk of sounding overly simplistic, can we really aspire to more than Mary and the shepherds? What

if we approached 2018 with a deliberate intention to follow their lead? How might the new year seem very

different if we treasured up the glory of the incarnation and pondered it in our hearts in the coming months? What

if we went back to our work and the routine of normal life glorifying and praising God for the birth of our Savior?

Pondering God’s love for me in sending Jesus would go a long way to dispelling my fears and anxieties.

Remembering that he came bringing peace and goodwill to me would surely help to reorient my priorities and

determine what matters most. And what would my friends, family, and coworkers conclude if I suddenly stopped

working for the weekend and really started rejoicing? Life looks very different when we stop pushing Jesus to the

edges of our lives and we start invite him into our hearts, living rooms and workspace! Let’s do that this year!

  • Berlin Mission Trip 2018

She was in Berlin but her home was Russia. At 13, she already knew she wanted an education so she needed to improve her

English. That’s how she came to be at our 2017 Berlin English Camp. As we got to know her, we heard more about her home life,

her 13-year-old dreams and the sense of hopelessness that hung in the background of her life. Finally, when the adult leader could no

longer ignore the impulse she asked the girl, “Can I pray for you, talk to God for you?” The girl’s puzzled look and curious response

broke my heart: “What does that mean?”

That, in a nutshell, is the opportunity we have in serving in Berlin in July of 2018. As we draw closer to the spring, we need to

finalize the membership of this team. The clock is ticking! If God is stirring your heart to explore this amazing opportunity, please

connect with Mike Foster (704-460-5324) or Jeff Morrison (704-804-1921) ASAP!

    Tour the Holy Land—October 2018

A guided tour is the best way to discover the Holy Land and understand the Gospels, reading passages at some of the sacred sites that

you would visit. In Jerusalem, you will:

    1. Travel the Via Dolorosa, the 14 Stations of the Cross

    2. Tour the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, which lies in the heart of the Christian Quarter of the Old City

    3. Stand on and descend from the Mount of Olives, where Jesus taught His disciples, prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem,

    and wept over its fate

If you have ever had the desire to visit Jerusalem and Israel, now is a great time by going with Pastor Matt, his parents Richard and

Margaret, and groups from our church and Richard’s church. Reserve your space now as the tour is filling up. Contact Mike Foster at

    704-460-5324.

    New 2018 Scripture Memorization Plan!

Beginning Sunday, January 7, First ARP Church will begin the Scripture Memorization Plan! Committing God’s Word to memory

is a spiritual discipline that pays great dividends for our walk of faith and helps guard against temptation, anxiety, and

discouragement. This new plan will provide you with a verse to memorize each week of 2018. If you participate, you will have

memorized 52 verses at the end of the year! The weekly verse will be printed in your Sunday worship bulletin and will be included in

the weekly email blast. See January’s verses below. If you are a seasoned veteran at Scripture memorization, or a total newbie, here

is an opportunity to, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” (Col. 3:16) Let’s get started!

Week 1 (January 7) Romans 1:16-17 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the

Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

    Week 2 (January 14) Romans 2:13

“For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.”

Week 3 (January 21) Romans 3:20 “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.”

Week 4 (January 28) Romans 3:23-24 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ

    Jesus.”

  • A BIG thank you to the Hanging of the Greens

team! Rhonda and Rick Craig chaired the

committee this year. Penny and Danny Wilson,

Cathy and John Connor, Jamee Webb, Mike

Craig and Carol Lee Ferguson were their

helpers along with Mike Watson and David

Jennings. It was beautiful. Thank you so much!

AND also, thank you to Jenny Morrow and “her

girls” for decorating the Fellowship Hall tree.

    Dear Praying Friends,

A blessed New Year to each of you. Below is a

note Andrew Brunson wrote a few weeks ago.

“I am deeply grateful to all who have

prayed for me. This trial - time in prison -

has stretched me far more than I ever

would have imagined. I have been very

weak, had many doubts, felt very alone. I

know that God's grace is sustaining me,

even when I do not feel that grace, and I

know that the prayers of God's people are

surrounding me and giving strength. One

of my big fears has been that I will be

forgotten in prison. Thank you for not

forgetting! It is a great encouragement to

know there are people praying for me - it

reminds me that I am not alone, and that I

need to stand firm, with my face pointed in

God's direction always. Thank you for

standing with me in this most difficult

    time.” Many blessings to you,

    Andrew

    Dear Meal Volunteers,

Thank you for all the wonderful meals you

prepared for our sick, new moms and

homebound members in 2017. I heard it over

and over again, “I don’t know what we would

have done.” “The meals helped us so much.”

“They were delicious!” Without you, this

ministry would be impossible. Thank you from

    the bottom of my heart.

    Nancy Peeler

    Dear First ARP Church,

Thank you so much for all of the prayers,

support, cards, text messages, and meals during

the short time that Jonathan’s dad was sick and

after his passing. We have really felt the love of

our church family during this time.

    Love, Jonathan, Jenny

    & David Dockery

    Dear Church Family,

My family joins me in thanking you for your

loving care at Marilyn’s death. Your support of

prayer, calls, and cards have just been

phenomenal. A special note of thanks to the

pastors for their care and help at this time. Jo

Summey and her helpers and the circles did an

outstanding job of preparing the delicious meal,

    which was served on beautifully-decorated

tables. Thank you so much. Also, thanks to

Charles Ferguson for arranging for ushers and to

those who served. You are truly the body of

    Christ.

    Sincerely,

    Audrey Thornton

    Dear First ARP Church, 11-27-17

Thank you so much for cleaning my yard and

my gutters for me. I also ask each and every one

of you for your prayers. My son who lived with

me was just killed in a car wreck in Charlotte by

a lady going 73 miles per hour. Please keep my

family in everyone’s prayers. We need it so

    much.

    Thanks,

    Lori Tindall

    408 W. 2nd Ave.

    Dear Church Family, 11-26-17

Thank you so much for the care package! The

sweet treats and gift card are greatly appreciated

and will most definitely be enjoyed. Your love,

support, and prayers are felt, and I’m happy to

report that I’m doing well. Thanks so much

    again for everything.

    Respectfully,

    MIDN 4/C James Anthony

    Dear Church Family, 12-8-17

I want to thank you for all the acts of kindness

during my recent illness. The calls, cards and all

the thoughts and prayers raised on my behalf

were greatly appreciated. My thanks again.

What Does It Take To Have A Successful

    Christmas Store?

First of all, it takes the generous congregation at First

ARP Church who grab angels off of our Angel Tree and

donate money, diapers, basketballs and footballs. Next, our

great shoppers use that money to buy clothes for the children

whose parents will be shopping for them. Also, we need our

wonderful Women’s Ministry group who donate the money

for the food box for each family, our Bible table (each family

gets a bible) and money for Tari Williamson to spend in our

toiletries room (where she also donates a piece of pottery to

each family that she has made. In addition, there is a family in

our church that donates a gift card for food that is included in

each family’s food box and several of our WM circles donate

games, toys, bedding, etc. for the game room.

Next, we have David Jennings, Mike Watson, and

“crew” who set up the tables and racks for the store in the

designated rooms on Thursday before the store so that we

have time to set up all of the merchandise. Many people

volunteered their time and talents to set up the store. This

involves carrying bags of clothing and other “stuff” to the

appropriate room, unloading the items, putting them in the

right place by size, and marking out the price on each item

and hanging up any shirts or coats, etc. It takes several days

and a lot of time and people to accomplish these tasks. In the

meantime, Katie Morrow and Mary Lou Pearson have been

busy making name tags for the parents, children, bags for

each child, and a family ticket for the food box. Courtney

McKeown and her Moms group have shopped for and packed

    the food boxes.

Finally, the Christmas store is ready! In the Fellowship

Hall, Rebecca Maney holds the Birthday Party for Jesus for

the elementary aged children, Leslie Farrar provides nursery

for children 4 and under, and Josh Hjemvick has a program

for the middle school and up aged children. Allen and Becky

Waters and Tammy Hubbard check the families in and give

them nametags. At the appointed time, the parents are

escorted upstairs where Peggy Smith and Kathy Connor take

care of checking them in and out and Gene Martin is in

charge of the” bagmen” who carry the bags to the cars for the

parents after they have shopped. There are volunteers in each

department and shopper helpers who accompany each parent

while they shop. At the end of the store, parents have BIG

smiles on their faces as they leave and all who helped are

VERY tired but I think that any one of them would tell you

that it was well worth it!! Thanks to all of you for your help

    with this project!!!

  • Church Security and Safety Training Seminar

First ARP Church will be hosting a church security and safety seminar on Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 8:00am to 5:00pm. This highly recommended, in-depth training seminar will be presented by THREAT SUPPRESSION, a professional security training firm specializing in church security and safety. This seminar is open to anyone—First ARP Church members, their family members and friends. So, please make plans to attend and bring someone with you. The seminar is free of charge, however, there will be a $5.00 per person lunch meal provided to be paid at the door (hotdogs and hamburgers). Please RSVP to the church office at 704-864-3468 or to [email protected] no later than January 19, 2018. Please forward any questions to Eric Riley at [email protected]. See you there!

Facilities Coordinator at First ARP Church

First ARP has been blessed for the last several years to have David Jennings serve as the Facilities Coordinator. David has done a great job in maintaining the buildings and grounds and has wisely used the budgeted funds and volunteer resources to accomplish this. David has recently accepted another position in the Gastonia area, with his last day on staff being December 31. Please thank David for his commitment to the church and for a job well done. On an interim basis, Wade Huss will serve as an interim Facilities Coordinator beginning January 1. Wade previously served in this capacity for a period of time. The Session is now beginning a search for a permanent Facilities Coordinator, which is a 20 hour per week position. The Facilities Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the set-up, cleaning, and maintenance of the facilities, equipment, and grounds of First ARP Church. If you are interested in a full job description or submitting a resume, contact Mike Foster at the church office. Resumes will be accepted until January 31, 2018.

Operation Christmas Child Warehouse Packing Night

Thank you to the adults and youth for your participation with the OCC Warehouse packing night in Charlotte on

Wednesday, December 6. It is a meaningful part of First ARP’s representation with the OCC project completion to

join hands with each of you. Consider the warehouse experience as part of your Christmas joy for 2018. We look

forward to seeing everyone in December!
