The Deep End: Synergy

Earlier in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus sent out the Twelve disciples to heal disease and to teach about God’s Kingdom. Here he sends out a much larger group ahead of him, in pairs to every town and place where He himself intended to go. Being sent in pairs reminds us of the value of team work. In order for communities to grow and flourish the gifts of many people are needed. Synergy is needed. This happens when individual talents are harvested and aligned, as in the beauty of a choir singing in perfect harmony, or a sports team at the peak of their performance. Synergy is like a power of the Spirit that rewards collaborative efforts. It is when we can dream and strive for the possibility of things before they happen. Synergy promotes collaboration, not competition or exclusion. Jesus gathered his followers around him, men and women, who were enthused by his vision. He sends his followers out in pairs so that they can support one another. In all our different roles, we too are sent out ahead of him, as parents, ministers of various kinds, politicians, educators, social workers, nurses … In any team – a parish council, a ministry group, a choir, we need a type of synergy. We are all responsible for our Church, not just a select few. We all have different roles to play, we all have responsibilities. When we promote collaborative team work and strive for synergy, we embrace each other’s stories and work for the common good. Then, exciting things are possible!

Best You Can Be Parishioners from Ballyroan, Churchtown and Rathfarnham parishes are invited to take part in a reflective day entitled Best You Can Be on Saturday 21st September 2019 in The Ruah Pastoral Centre, Ballyroan.

Best You Can Be is an introduction to developing adult faith. It aims to explore the nature of adult faith in keeping with Pope Francis’ vision that Christians would continue to grow in their personal relationship with God. Best you Can Be encourages reflection on the stages of faith development and participants’ images of God. The course points to Jesus as the One who shows us the way to be the best that we can be. Adult faith is about lifelong listening, learning and discerning.

The facilitation team for the day will be Ms Rosemary Lavelle (Pastoral Coordinator in the Office for Evangelisation and Ecumenism), Fr John Bracken, Co-P.P. Holy Cross Church, Dundrum Ms Eilis O’ Reilly and Ms Rachel Brady, parishioners from the parish of Ss. Peter and Paul, Balbriggan.

The day begins at 10.00a.m. and finishes at 4.30p.m. Please bring a packed lunch.

If you would like to register for the Best You Can Be reflection day, you must give your name and phone number to your parish secretary.

PATHWAYS

Exploring Faith and Ministry An Adult Faith Development Programme - applications are now open for the next intake of participants for Pathways. The programme begins this year in Holy Cross College, on Thursday 26th. September 2019 (7.00p.m.– 9.30 p.m.). Places are limited so early application is advisable. Pathways is a two-year one night a week course for adults of all ages who wish to explore their faith. It runs from late September to May each year, with breaks for Christmas, Easter and mid-terms. There are no exams and no written work. The only requirement is an openness to listening to others and to participate. The cost is €400 for the coming year which may be paid in instalments throughout the year. For more information please visit: www.evangelisation.ie or contact: Pathways Director, Eileen Houlahan, CHF, PhD, Pathways Programme, Holy Cross College, Clonliffe Road, Dublin, DO3 P2E7. Phone: 01 8087594 or Email [email protected]

Below is a personal experience of the Pathways Programme by Tony Corcoran of our Parish.

Some years ago I attended Pathways, which was then held in All Hallows. The course ran for two years on one evening a week and the format was that all attendees gathered together for a presentation from 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm. The subjects covered the whole range of practical Theology, with an emphasis on practical – from Scripture to Moral Theology to Bereavement and Prayer Guidance. Participants were from all walks of life, young and not-so-young, male and female. Then, after the presentation we all gathered together for a tea/coffee break with lively debate and discussion. The group then split up into small discussion groups of 10-12 people, led by trained facilitators. In these small groups frank and honest contributions were made by all on the basis of confidentiality. What was said in the room stayed in the room. Finally, the whole group reassembled with the speaker to listen to agreed feedback and questions from each individual group. Finally, we all dispersed home in a peaceful and relaxed frame of mind. I must say that I found the course so satisfying that I returned to All Hallows for the following two years to study Moral Theology, Scripture Studies and Pastoral Care before returning to Pathways again, this time as a facilitator.
