To our friends in the community of Crestwood,
Last week, the FDNY family suffered a catastrophic loss when Deputy Chief Michael Fahy was killed in the line of duty, as he bravely protected Bronx residents from an explosion. He was a rising star in our Department, someone who would surely have led others and continued to serve New Yorkers with valor for many years to come.
In the face of such loss, the outpouring of support you gave the Fahy family and our Department was nothing short of extraordinary. When more than 10,000 FDNY members lined the streets of Crestwood to pay their respects to Chief Fahy at the Annunciation Church, they were warmly greeted by countless Crestwood residents, who also turned out to pay their respects. We were concerned that our show of solidarity could have been an imposition on your community, but you provided comfort and support when our members needed it most.
In the beautiful eulogy to her husband, Chief Fahy’s wife Fiona stated, “To our Crestwood Family. I am thankful, that by the Grace of God, this is where our children are growing up.”
The entire FDNY is thankful and truly grateful for all of you as well.
Sincerely,
Daniel A. Nigro Fire Commissioner

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)
WILL YOU JOIN US IN THIS JOURNEY?
The RCIA is the process by which men and women become members of the Catholic Church. The process begins in September and culminates at the Easter Vigil
in the spring with the recep on of the Sacrament of Ini a on. Forma on includes several areas:
-Scripture: the stories of God’s people. -Teaching: what Catholics believe.
-Prayer: how we communicate with God. -Liturgy: how the community worships.
-Mission: how we live out what we believe. WHO BELONGS IN THE RCIA?
The process of Chris an Ini a on is for adults who… -want to learn more about the Catholic Church.
-are unbap zed and want to become Catholic Chris ans through the sacraments of Bap sm, Confirma on,
and Eucharist. -are bap zed Chris ans (in another faith
tradi on or the Catholic Faith) who want full sacramental membership in the Roman Catholic Church through Confirma on and Eucharist and a end Catholic Church because of a loved one
or spouse and are not sure if the Catholic Church is for them, but are willing to ask ques ons.
HOW DOES IT WORK? God calls and we respond. In the process of Chris an
Ini a on, men and women at all stages of the faith journey come together in a non-threatening,
non-pressured atmosphere to learn more about the Catholic Church as their way of following Jesus. The RCIA provides a forum for shared spiritual growth and a means
to explore the Catholic Chris an tradi on through the scripture, sacraments, church teaching and social outreach, as part of the Catholic faith community.
Classes will begin in late September. Please call the Rectory at 914-779-7345 for more informa on.
Food Dona ons Always Needed A couple of items each month from each Annuncia on-Our Lady of Fa ma family would surely “do the trick” for a Happy
Halloween for the 180 families visi ng the food pantry run by The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal.
The number of homeless who appeal to the sisters for assistance increases as the weather grows colder. They men oned they could use extra granola bars and juice boxes to go with the sandwiches they provide.
Copies of a “Thoughts for Food” list are at each drop-off loca on: At Annuncia on: cabinets at the back of the church At Fa ma: baskets in the ves bule
Thank you so much for your generosity.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time, October 9, 2016
“They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, ‘JESUS, MASTER! Have pity on us!’ And when he saw them he said, ‘Go show yourselves to the priests.’… ‘Has none returned but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?’ Then he said to him, ‘Stand up and go, your faith has saved you.’” A familiar gospel passage, usually attached to our celebration of Thanksgiving. Nine did what they were told to do, don’t chastise them for that. One had a deeper insight to what happened, and he was praised and came back to Jesus. As we soon will bring the Jubilee Year of Mercy to a close we, like the ten, call out ‘have pity on us.’ Why not take the seven works of mercy and put a name or face on them, as we find leprosy and hurt in those around us. ‘Jesus Master’, help me feed the hungry, support a shelter. Help me ease the thirst of someone. Assist me in giving some good clothing to a needy person. May we cry for the refugees and welcome the immigrant in our community. Allow me the privilege of praying for an incarcerated person, or lift this or another family’s burden. A phone call to an elderly shut in, or a card to a person in rehab makes Jesus’ compassion present. He didn’t even touch the leper, but spiritually reached out to him. Simple things, but expressions of compassion, mercy, making Christ present to those whom Pope Francis calls the marginalized.
