Investing In Independence “Our mission is to provide exceptional services to ensure that all people with disabilities or

special needs have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities.”

- Easter Seals Arkansas Mission

Dear Friends of Easter Seals Arkansas,

As we enter the second decade of the 21st

century, we realize that the future is now for

children and adults with disabilities. This past

year, Easter Seals Arkansas continued to Invest in

Independence by developing several new

programs to serve people with disabilities. From

RENEW, our new recycling program which

helps employ people with disabilities, to Camp

Aware, an innovative approach to serving

students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, we

are at the cutting edge of services.

The A.R.T. Program (Artistic Realization

Technologies), allowed Jake, Sam, Jacqueline and

other artists with special needs to express their

creative talents. The latest initiative by Easter

Seals to “Make the First Five Count” has been a

top priority for our Preschool and Outpatient

Therapy Programs where children like Parker

overcame many obstacles every day. And there

are more exciting changes coming in the next

year as we continue to Invest in the Future for

people with disabilities through our campaign

initiative to build an Adult Training and Wellness

Center, the only facility of its kind in Arkansas,

for adults with disabilities.

We want to thank the children, adults and

their families who inspire us every day with their

courage and determination. We are grateful for

our generous donors who invest in our programs

to ensure people with disabilities have a variety of

opportunities for independence. And lastly, we

thank our talented staff who invest their time and

energy to ensure that children and adults with

disabilities can truly live, learn, work and play in

our community.

2011 Representatives ryan says he learned early on that he can do anything he sets his mind to; he just

might have to do it a little differently. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Bryan attended preschool and received therapy services at Easter Seals as a child. Now a high school graduate, Bryan lives independently in his own apartment.

iagnosed with cerebral palsy at two years of age, Hannah began preschool and thera-

py services at Easter Seals. Today, this vibrant, happy pre-teen is walk-ing independently and making great strides in learning to ride a bike and in her typing and handwriting skills.

ith a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, communication and mobility can be difficult, but Rhett’s determination

and the support of his family, teachers and therapists are making both very achievable. Standing and walking for short distances, Rhett continues to achieve goals many thought would never be possible.

n addition to school, scouting, cheerleading and choir, Naomas spends several hours a week in

physical, occupational and speech therapy to increase his independence. Naomas’ determination and drive to reach his goal of walking independently is an inspiration to everyone he meets.

t just four months old, Ali was diagnosed with Williams syndrome, a condition which

makes it difficult for her to meet her developmental milestones. A 2011 Easter Seals preschool graduate, Ali started kindergarten this fall and has been a hit with her class.

Making the First Five Count

orn with Goldenhar Syndome, a rare

congenital defect, Parker has no left

ear, slight facial abnormalities and

was hospitalized in the NICU for

the first two weeks of his life. After

being discharged from the hospital, Parker’s

mother, Audri, contacted Easter

Seals Infant Monitoring Program

(IMP). At six weeks, she had

Parker evaluated by the IMP

team which is comprised of a

physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a

speech-language pathologist who specialize in

high risk infants. There was concern that there

might be developmental delays and the earlier he

began therapy, the better. “I had no idea that he

could get support that soon or that it would even

be needed,” Audri says.

Parker began physical and speech therapy

and at five months was enrolled in A Child’s

Place Preschool. Parker continues to receive

speech therapy for feeding and speech delays, but

he has already tested out of physical therapy

because of his amazing progress. At 19 months,

although small for his age, he is reaching his

developmental milestones.

“I would recommend

Easter Seals to anyone.

It’s a great place whether

you have a child with a

disability or not,” Audri says.

Easter Seals is committed to the “Making the

First Five Count” awareness campaign so children

at risk of developmental delays, like Parker, get

the right support and services they need to be

school ready while building a strong foundation

for a successful lifetime of learning.

“Children who attend high quality pre-kindergarten programs are less likely to be

held back a grade, less likely to need special education and more likely to graduate

high school.” - National Institute on Early Education Research Report

Camp Aware

aster Seals Outreach staff began to

see a need for a program for

students on the Autism Spectrum

after many phone

calls, discussions

with parents, and the ultimate

desire for these students to

have friendships. Camp Aware

was developed knowing that

many students on the spectrum

have great difficulty making

friends and communicating.

Dawn Stahlberg, Camp Director, developed a

similar program in Oregon. “Some students must

be taught social skills we often take for granted,”

says Dawn. “It doesn’t come naturally to them.

They are not going to learn the skills without a

systematic approach.”

Working with students ages 8-18 with

high-functioning Autism and Asperger’s

syndrome, Easter Seals launched Camp Aware

during the summer of 2011.

Camp Aware was designed to

teach students in understand-

ing social relationships and in

learning strategies for coping

with sensory and social

difficulties. The three week

camp focused on socialization

and communication skills as

well as sensory processing and self-advocacy skills.

Video modeling, role-playing and one-to-one

strategies were used to teach the students new

skills they can apply to everyday life, including

interacting with their peers.

E

Our Future: The program plans to expand its reach through year

round activities and will begin an afterschool program in 2012.

“. . . we can teach children how to be ‘social detectives’-to think about how

others see them and to use their eyes, ears and brains to learn what is expected

from them.” - Michelle Garcia Winner, author of “Social Thinking”

A.R.T. With No Boundaries

reating one-of-a-kind paintings

became a reality this

past year for Jake,

Jacqueline, Sam, and

the ten other artists

who participated in Easter Seals

newest program, Artistic Realiza-

tion Technologies (A.R.T.).

Mary Lynn Nelson intro-

duced the program to Easter Seals

in 2010. Mary Lynn says, “I feel

that A.R.T. has given the artists

with disabilities freedom of ex-

pression and put in my heart a desire to see

that A.R.T. is a thriving program for Easter

Seals.”

The process was developed by Tim

Lefens, a New Jersey artist, to

give children and adults with dis-

abilities, who don’t have the use

of their hands, a way to express

their inner artist. The artists

work with “trackers” via a laser

or other methods of communica-

tion to create one-of-a-kind

paintings. The “trackers” are vol-

unteers who become the hands

and arms of the artists by taking

directives from them to create

the pieces. They are trained to work with

each artist individually.

“Surely the greatest work of art any of us can ever create

is our own soul.” - Sue Monk Kidd, author

C

Our Future: The program will showcase the artists and their

creative works at the Governor’s Mansion in September 2011. At Left: Sam poses with his art. Top:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

n November 2010, Easter Seals Arkansas

began a new recycling program, RENEW,

which gives adults with disabilities the

opportunity to be employed

while also helping our

community go green. Collecting and

then sorting, shredding and baling all

types of office paper and cardboard,

RENEW provides meaningful work

and a paycheck to the participating

adults.

“We’ll collect anything that

accumulates in your office from

magazines and newspapers to

envelopes, manila folders, and Post-

It notes,” says Adult Services Director Johnny

Baldwin.

Since starting, RENEW has created paid

training opportunities for a total of 75 adults. An

average of 17 adults work in the recycling program

each pay period, earning $7.25 an hour. RENEW

collected, processed and shipped over 76,000 lbs

or 38 tons of materials in its first year.

Together, RENEW and Central

Arkansas businesses are providing adults

with disabilities the opportunity to be

successful while creating a greener,

healthier and more efficient community

for all of us to live in.

Business World uses RENEW and

has seen a dramatic reduction in waste

pick-up expenses. “We’ve seen our waste

collection go from three pick-ups a week

to only one. As a Corporate Partner of

Easter Seals, we also like that we’re able to help

adults with disabilities have a job of their own,”

says Business World President Wade Timmerman.

“It’s time to renew our commitment to the world

around us.” - Christopher Dodd, politician

I

Our Future: The program continues to add new contracts with local businesses and is developing

space to include secure document destruction thus creating more jobs for adults with disabilities.

The RENEW Recycling program had a positive

impact on the environment:

646 trees saved

264,214 gallons of

water saved

17,594 gallons of oil

saved

154,926 kilowatt

hours of energy saved

22,306 pounds of air

pollution eliminated

116.28 cubic yards of

landfill space saved

he future looks even brighter for

our Adult Services programs. In

the next year,

Easter Seals Ar-

kansas will build

a new Adult Training and

Wellness Center, the only

facility of its kind in Arkan-

sas that combines job and

life skills programs with

health and wellness. Train-

ing will include nutrition, wellness and cook-

ing programs; expanded fitness programs; art

and music classes; community experience

instruction; specialized sensory areas and a

technology lab. The current facility limits

services to only 100

adults. The new facility

will expand program and

services to provide pre-

ventative healthcare needs

for adults who are more

likely to suffer from obesi-

ty, high blood pressure

and diabetes. This is an

important step to ensuring that adults with

disabilities receive specialized training and

support to work and live independently.

“Americans with disabilities who want to work shouldn’t have to

wait one more day.” - President Bill Clinton

T

Our Future: Investing in Independence campaign begins in Fall

2011. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2013.

In 2011, it was our distinct honor to recognize Gus Vratsinas as the recipient of the prestigious Arkansan of the Year award. He was honored for his many contributions to Arkansas through business, economic development and philanthropy. Vratsinas, who celebrated 16 years of service to Easter Seals, has had an extraordinary vision of the future for children and adults with disabilities, and his legacy lives on in the building projects he supported.

John Steuri and Sam Alley served as co-chairs with Sheffield Nelson, the 2010 Arkansan of the Year, serving as Honorary Chairman. The event was held at the Statehouse Convention Center Ballroom.

Lawrence Hamilton was accompanied by the Easter Seals choir singing “Let There be Peace on Earth” and a live auction was held after the dinner. The evening raised over $350,000 to support the programs and services of Easter Seals.

Art & Soul

The adults at the Adult Services Center created

the signature piece for 2010. Held this year at the

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, the event

featured more than 100 pieces of art by local

artists and Easter Seals children and adults.

Presented by The Tenenbaum Foundation, the

event was co-chaired by Gary Davis, Sharon

Heflin, Vincent Insalaco and Judy Tenebaum and

raised over $59,000 to support our programs.

The Fashion Event

Chaired by Jeanne Johansson and co-chaired by

Cindy Murphy, the fourth annual fashion show

set the stage for Little Rock’s Spring fashion. The

setting was once again the elegant Chenal

Country Club where guests viewed the latest

spring fashions from several local boutiques. The

band, Tragikly White, played while professional

models and Easter Seals children and adults

walked the runway. The event raised more than

$61,000 to support our programs.

Taste of Mediterranean/

Greekfest Golf Classic

The Taste of the Mediterranean and the

Greekfest Golf Classic are held annually in

partnership with the Annunciation Greek

Orthodox Church. This year’s Taste of the

Mediterranean featured wine tasting, a live and

silent auction and entertainment by Middle

Eastern dancers.

The golf tournament was held at the Chenal

Country Club with over 40 teams participating.

Together the events raised over $200,000 to

help support Easter Seals, Community

Connections and the Annunciation Greek

Orthodox Church.
