Leadership Spearfish

It is hard to believe that it is once again time to begin enrollments for Leadership Spearfish. Each year the group of students and their interaction with each other is amazing. More often than not, they come to the first session as complete strangers, but graduate as a team of leaders and friends. Graduates of Leadership Spearfish have continued their journey by giving back to the community in many ways, including serving on various boards, City Council, and participating in many projects that make Spearfish a great place to live and call home. Leadership Spearfish 2015-2016 begins September 11 with an overnight retreat, runs for nine months, and culminates with a May graduation.

Each Leadership class is asked to spearhead a project that will benefit the community as a whole. Over the years, the classes have accomplished many amazing projects as leaders. The 2015 class teamed up with the Kenadi Jean Weis Foundation to help raise funds for an all inclusive playground for Spearfish. In 2014, the class organized an effort to clean up our parks after storm Atlas. Many years ago, the class played a major roll in the creation of the playland in Spearfish City Park. There is amazing power in teamwork!

One of the many sessions each year includes an early morning trip to Pierre for Business Day at the Legislature. Hosted by the SD State Chamber of Commerce & Industy, this is an opportunity for the class to learn about our state gov-ernment, participate in a live caucus, meet our District Legislators and watch the bill process in action.

See the insert in this newsletter on Leadership Spearfish for the 2015-2016 schedule and application.

Spearfish Economic Indicators

Which state has the highest “real" minimum wage in the country?

South Dakota, according to a recent story published in the

Washington Post.

Officially, South Dakota’s minimum wage is $8.50 per hour.

However, when you factor in the buying power of that money, the

real minimum wage is $9.70 an hour, the highest in the country.

Here is a quick comparison:

While minimum wages range from the federal floor of $7.25 in 20

states to $10.50 in Washington D.C., wages earned are only as

valuable as what can be purchased with them according to the

Regional Price Parity, a government study which compares prices

across geographies.

State Minimum Wage Adjusted Minimum Wage

South Dakota $8.50 $9.70

Washington D.C. $10.50 $8.92

Minnesota $8.00 $8.20

California $9.00 $8.01

New York $8.75 $7.59

The Crow Peak Brewing Company of Spearfish was recently recognized as the “Manufacturer of the Year” by Black Hills Community Economic Development. Congratulations Jeff, Josh, Carolyn, Tanya and all the staff!!!

According to the study, South Dakota

($9.70), Oregon ($9.37) and Washington ($9.18)

maintained the highest adjusted minimum wage

rates; while Virginia ($7.04), New Hampshire

($6.85) and Hawaii ($6.67) have the lowest

adjusted minimum wage rates.

South Dakota’s lower cost of living benefits

all income levels, including a business’s bottom

line. That’s an advantage worth promoting when

competing for new investments.
