SCHOOL REPORT

To the S. IS. Committee and Citizens of Greene:In compliance with the requirements of law, I herewith

submit the following report of the condition of the schools, also a financial statement of the school department of Greene for the year ending March 1, 1916.

As I was elected Superintendent of Schools Oct. 14, 1915, to fill out the year, caused by the resignation of II. A. Goss, it will be impossible for me to give you a detailed report for the entire year.

Briefly, let us note some of the repairs necessary to put the school buildings in fair condition. Realizing that the schools are of most vital importance in forming character, you cannot make the buildings and surroundings too attractive.

MORSE SCHOOLInterior needs attention, ceiling whitened, walls either

tinted or papered, blackboards redressed, also a new inside door knob This school has the old-fashioned benches that are far from being comfortable for the scholars.

PATTEN SCHOOLThis schoolroom is hardly large enough to accommodate

the number of scholars registered, thirty-five during the year. It also appeared to be poorly lighted. Interior needs ceiling whitened, walls painted, blackboards are in poor condition, and the floor is very poor.

MOUNTAIN SCHOOLCeiling and walls of this room are in bad condition,

blackboard should have attention and some new funnel for stove.

Page 31: Annual Reports of the Municipal Officers Town Clerk

27

RIVER ROADAs this is a new building, it is a very pleasant room, yet

you need to watch out for little repairs. The ceiling has the appearance in places that snow has sifted in, although 1 could not see how this was possible.

HILL SCHOOLThis is a very pleasant schoolroom, yet it is small, and

the grounds around building are poor; a little grading would add much to appearances.

LANE SCHOOLCeiling needs patching and whitening, walls repapered,

and the entry and doors repaired. There are some shingles off in the hack gable that has let snow blow in. Thirty- four scholars registered and only one outbuilding for boys and girls. All I can say is that the sanitary conditions are degrading. In fact, all the outbuildings need inspection, as they are defaced with knives and pencil, and too much attention cannot be given to the sanitary conditions.

SCHOOLSSix schools have been maintained the past year, and

taken together should think good work had been accomplished. I believe it is the duty of every tax payer as well as parents, to visit the schools, and investigate, to see if you are getting good results for money invested. Study the table of statistics and compare your school with the others and see if it will not be possible during the next year to have less cases of tardiness, better attendance, and lastly see to it that your school is visited more frequently. Go to the school and talk over with the teacher about your boy or girl.

Nov. 4, 1915, was observed as Educational Day at Androscoggin Grange and Miss Florence Hale gave a very interesting address.

Page 32: Annual Reports of the Municipal Officers Town Clerk

28»

Monday evening, Dec. 13, 1915, Mrs. Walter L. Smith of Malden, Mass., gave an address at the Town Hall in the interest of the National Congress of Mothers and Parent- Teacher Associations. It was voted to organize a branch at Greene. I would extend an invitation to everyone to join this association, for it is one of the best ways of bringing the home and school together.

In conclusion, I wish to extend to the S. S. Committee, teachers, scholars, parents and citizens my sincere thanks for your hearty cooperation.

Respectfully submitted,L i n d l e y G. P a r k e r ,

Superintendent of Schools.
