Mandal

2015-16

Founder’s Speech

Dear Readers,

I was born and brought up in village, got married at a very early age and came to Mumbai. Since

more than 20 years I have been staying in Maharashtra Nagar area of Mankhurd. After coming

here I could see the plight of people and always wanted to do something for them, but did not

have any direction. The passion towards working for the society drove me in this field. I started

meeting different people in social sector and came in contact with the Community Development

Officer of MCGM. Being a woman myself I could understand the power a woman has and

decided to form SHG groups under the Swarnajayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojana. Women

empowerment was the main issue we wanted to focus on and hence we formed Vishwa Shanti

Mahila Vikas Mandal in 2005.

Though women empowerment was our core work area, we were involved in other community

activities like employment generation, child labour eradication, vocational training, sanitation and

health, housing etc. This year the organization has been actively involved in many activities like

providing mid day meal to anganwadi kids, waste management under Swachcha Mumbai

Prabodhan Abhiyan, organizing training workshops for women empowerment and livelihood

trainings. For the coming year we are looking forward to work for the holistic development of the

community.

Regards,

Ms. Sangeeta Kamble,

President, Vishvashanti Mahila Vikas Mandal

Governing Body

Swachcha Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan (SMPA)

The Swachcha Mumbai Prabodhan Abhiyan project is run by VSMVM in Mankhurd area since 4

years. Initially the project was taken up for a year but every year the term got extended. The

objective behind taking up this project is to provide employment opportunities for men and

women and also for environmental conservation. The project is run in a society called Jankalyan

Society at Mankhurd.

Various activities are conducted under this project like cleaning the society, cleaning gutters in

and around the society, cleaning drainages etc. which is done by the 7 workers appointed. The

workers also collect the segregated waste (wet and dry) from houses and take all the waste for

making compost. The compost is further used in trees. The organization also conducts awareness

programmes in and around the society as well as in other areas of Mankhurd about waste

management. To conduct these workshops the organization conducts meetings of mahila

mandals and youth group and distribute tulsi plants, cloth bags, pamphlets, conduct activities

where they paint the walls by writing environmental messages on it like “Save trees” and they

also talk to parents of kids coming to anganwadis to join them by helping to save the

environment. Through the awareness created by the organization in Janakalyan Society now the

residents have started segregating the waste which reduces the work of the workers.

While doing this work the organization faces lot of challenges like staff retention is a big task,

because cleaning gutters is a tough job as your body can stinks and because of which very few

people continue the job. As the project is given by MCGM, the salary of the staff and other

expenses are provided by MCGM only, but it doesn’t include mask and other safety equipments.

The organization is planning to provide training to residents of Jankalyan Society on making

compost.

Health Program

Sakas Ahar Puravatha project

Health care, growth monitoring, immunization, supplementary nutrition and pre-school

education are parts of these services directed to Anganwadi Centers (AWC). Under this

programme, children six years old and below, are entitled to 500 calories and 12-15 grams of

protein. Undernourished children are guaranteed to avail 800 calories and 20-25 grams of protein

regularly while, pregnant and lactating women are entitled to 600 calories of energy and 18-20

grams of protein a day.

Since the year 2012 the organization is running the Sakas Ahar Puravtha project. Through this

project the organization is providing meal to 19 anganwadis of Mankhurd and Cheetah Camp.

Under this project there are 5 staff members and all are women of Mahila Mandal, who prepare

the food and deliver it to all the 20 anganwadis. The menu for six days is fixed,

The organization receives Rs. 4.92/- per kid per day which includes the material, preparation and

delivery cost. In this money the organization is able to pay the women workers but faces

difficulty in running the operations. Further the bills are not cleared on time from the ICDS

department which forces the organization to shell out money from their own account.

This project of providing nutritious food to anganwadis has helped these women to come out of

their houses and earn a living. They are now looked upon as an important source for the family

income and are respected by the family members.

The way forward

In the last few years the organization has been working actively in the field of sanitation. Being

working in Maharashtra Nagar of Mankhurd which is majorly a slum area, there is lack of toilet

facilities, which has a direct impact on the health of the people especially women. To have a

solution on this the organization is planning to introduce the concept of “one home one toilet” in

the area in the year 2016-17. In order to implement the idea VSMVM would need help from

MCGM for permission and also from a CSR who would provide financial support to implement

the project. Besides this the organization will continue with its other activities and work towards

creating holistic development of women.
