Workshop on Robotics

A Workshop on Robotics was also held on December 28, 2009. Presentations were made by Subhajit Roy and Somnath Chakraborty; both are fourth year B.Tech. (ECE) students. Demonstrations on robotics were given. The basics of micro-controller programing was explained briefly followed by demonstrations of control of wheels by commands on the command prompt of the computer. The lecture also included sensing light by a camera and guiding the assembled robotic circuit board following a “white” line. The lecture demonstrations were attended by 21 students. More activities will be organized in the future by the SPIE Student Chapter. The notice/advertisement of the event is shown below. Some photographs of students having hands on with the robotic circuit are also shown.

Career Development Lecture

A career development lecture was organized for the students on January 9, 2010. The purpose was to give the students an open forum to interact with the industry personnel and get an idea about the needs of the industry houses. Mr. Somen Ghosh, Senior Business Development Manager, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Kolkata was invited. Incidentally, Mr. Ghosh got a MS degree in Optics and Optoelectronics from the University of Calcutta, although Mr. Ghosh had worked widely in different positions in different companies. The title of the lecture was “Preparing for the future: Unleashing the power within you”. The lecture started with some movie clips about beginning of a career. It continued with a well delivered presentations, interactions, group activities, and at last personal conversations with the participants. The students liked the contents so much that they wanted a more longer version of the same. We decided to organize a one-day workshop in the future.

Electronic Circuit Workshop

On March 6, 2010 the members of SPIE JISCE Student chapter organized an Electronics Workshop. The aim of this workshop was to teach the students the basics of Practical Elementary Electronics so that engineering students can implement in practical whatever they learn in their classes.

The event was organized by SPIE and lead by Mr.Somnath Chakraborty (Former Joint Secretary), Mr.

Fall Picnic and Welcome Party

The Fall Welcome Party was organized on September 18, 2010 for the freshers to ease their transition into college life and to introduce them to SPIE chapter and its mission. The Programme started with a short presentation by the President Elect Somesh Mukherjee. The new students were told about the activities of SPIE and details of the scopes for the engineering students. Descriptions on the past activities were presented. The new students asked questions to know more about SPIE, which were answered. The event ended with Lunch and Games. The Party was attended by 73 Students, both members and freshers. A photograph of the gathering is shown.

Outreach Activity - Springdale High School, Kalyani

Finally an outreach was organized in a local school, namely Spingdale High School, Kalyani on October 8, 2010. Various Optical Phenomenon were demonstrated to the Kids using kits made by members. The event was proposed for mainly 8th to 10th standard students. However, many students came from 6th, 7th and 8th standards at the end. So, the experiments were needed to be shown to them as well. The feedback of the students and the school was tremendous. They requested for more outreach to their school.

Reflection, Refraction, Lateral Displacement was demonstrated using lasers. Students were taught about Infrared LEDs and applications, and chromatography, applications of Lasers in Security and Photo Optical Sensors. They were shown a telescope. Around 350 students of various grades benefited from the event. Some photographs of the event are shown below.

A Website of the Chapter

A website was created for the JISCE SPIE Student Chapter. A separate domain name and a dedicated hosting space are purchased for the purpose. The primary website was created by the earlier web administrator Somesh Mokherjee. The chapter can be accessed at http://spie-jisce.org/. Although sincere efforts are required to make a good website, the chapter could just start to put up a web presence. Now it depends on the efforts of the members. A screenshot of the website is shown below.

LaserFest Grant

The chapter applied for a LaserFest grant for organizing outreach activities around the high schools in the locality and received a grant of US$650. This will be reported separately as a LaserFest activity in January 2011.

Collaborative Conference Grant

We planned and proposed a collaborative conference in collaboration with the University of Calcutta Chapter. The purpose of the conference will be to give a common platform to the students and the young community to discuss and interact on current topics of optics, electronics, lasers, image processing etc. We already received a grant of US$2300 for the purpose. The theme of the conference will be Convergence of Optics and Electronics and would be held during February 24-26, 2011 at the Science City, Kolkata, West Bengal.
