It is indeed my pleasure to present Annual Report of the Institute for the year 2014-15 before you. Braving the turbulent time being faced by the industry, we stood by the sugar industry to explore and implement cost effective solutions for improving productivity & profitability.

We look forward towards empowering and strengthening the sugar industry & allied industry by innovation, competitiveness and performance excellence through graphical development and absolute technologies. With fifth consecutive sugar season of surplus sugar production at global & domestic markets, the sugar prices may not see any turn around & sugar factories have to battle it with enhanced productivity and value addition.

"Productivity Enhancement" is going to be the "Mantra" for success. The subtropical region has to bridge the gap of farm productivity with the tropical region of the country. During the year 2014-15, we launched a massive

awareness programme educating the industry on development on high sugared & high yielding varieties. Surplus sugar is a matter of concern for all us, keeping this in view and requirement of ethanol for blending programme, Institute educated the industry for diversion of B-heavy molasses and other processing house intermediates. The Institute successfully carried out cultivation of Sugar Beet, LS-6 variety, for production of alcohol. We also successfully developed techno-economic process for production of alcohol from Cassava.

We at the Institute continuously striving for developing techniques for bagasse gasification, single stage process for Sulpher-less sugar production and on productivity of ligno cellulosic ethanol. As a part of our concerns to world environmental protection, we are working on a project awarded by M/s. Indian Exim Sugar Corporation, New Delhi, for development of new techniques and technologies to make fresh water requirement as zero in sugar factories. All such activities have been summarized in the report presented before you. The multi dimensional activities attracted the attention of overseas sugar related organizations also. Consequently, delegations from Iran and Switzerland visited the Institute for technical tie-ups.

Our student are our flag bearers. We deliver tremendous value to the students being the core strength of Nation, to develop competitive spirit to make path-breaking presentation on their vision, ideas and strategies as a driving force for Indian Sugar as well allied industries. All these achievements are by virtue of our around seven decades of technological leadership, to provide time bound solutions to all problems of Indian and allied industries. The introduction of course "Certificate Course in Quality Control" during the year, got tremendous response from the industry as reflected from the number of candidates appearing in entrance examination & 100% placement.

We gratefully acknowledge the support and confidence shown in us by all the stakeholders.

Sugar is generalized name for sweet. Sugar is found in the tissues of most of the

plants, but is present in sufficient concentrations for commercial extraction in

sugarcane and sugar beet only. A great expansion in its production took place in the

18th century with the layout of sugar plantations in the West Indies and America. This

was the first time that sugar became available to the common people who previously

had to rely on honey to sweetener foods. Although the manufacturing of Sugar from

different raw material is as old as evolution of civilization, however, the history of

modern method of sugar manufacture in India is traced back to 1930 when protection

was granted to the industry by Government. Soon thereafter, in 1936 the Imperial

Institute of Sugar Institute was established which over the years having gone through

change of the names and is known as National Sugar Institute, since 1957. Previously

housed in one of the premier engineering institute, namely, HBTI, it was shifted to its

present premises in the year 1963. National Sugar Institute under Government of

India, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Department of

Food & Public Distribution is engaged in multifunctional activities of Teaching,

Research &Consultancy for the benefit of the sugar & allied industry. In fact, National

Sugar Institute can claim to be the premier Institute providing lab to land service to

the Sugar & Allied Industries.

RESEARCH & OTHER WORK DONEIN VARIOUS DIVISIONS

SUGAR TECHNOLOGY DIVISION :

A. Production of Sulphurless Sugar :

This problem was taken up with a view to produce sulphurless sugar by a techno economic process

by the Sugar Technology division in coordination with a chemical manufacturing co. of Hyderabad.

Initial laboratory trials were conducted in the sugar technology laboratory using a polymeric

compound in place of SO and the results obtained were encouraging. Further, pilot plant trials in 2

E.S.F. were also conducted during the crushing season 2014-15, which indicated promise till juice

clarification stage. Further pilot plant trials will be carried out during the next crushing season.

17

Page 18: Annual Report Inner 2014-15

B. Use of CO Gas from Distillery for Clarification of Sugarcane Juice / Sugar melt -2

The study was initiated with a view that waste gases from distillery contain very good amount of CO 2

gas, which can be used for sugarcane juice clarification. Moreover, since the demand of sugar in the

International market is for sulphurless sugar only, to produce refined sugar at low cost of production,

this research project was undertaken in the Sugar Tech. division. Lab trials on new process,

"Carbonation & Decantation" were conducted at one commercial sugar factory of Maharashtra

during the sugar season 2014-15. Results obtained were observed to be encouraging. Further lab

trials are in progress to study the response on the clarification of sugar cane juice available in sub

tropical region.

C. Effect of Lead sub Acetate Clarifying agent on Pol reading of Sugar Solutions -

For measurement of pol reading of sugarcane juice and other in-house products in the conventional

process, the sample is clarified with lead sub acetate. Quantity of lead sub acetate used is variable for

different in-house products like raw cane juice, clear juice, syrup, massecuites and molasses. With a

view to determine the effect of amount of lead sub acetate applied on pol reading, this research work

has been taken up. Preliminary lab experiments have shown that there is a definite impact on pol

reading of sugar house products in relation to the quantity of lead sub acetate. Further experiments

are being conducted on different boiling house products.

D. Studies on Keeping Quality of Refined Sugar -

Generally, sugar is manufactured during the period October to June and is stored in godowns. Sale of

sugar is carried out as per market demand. Keeping quality of Sulphitation sugar is normally taken as

one year from the date of manufacturing but no specific studies have been made regarding keeping

quality of refined sugar. With a view to ascertain the period for which refined sugar quality under

goes minimum changes, this study has been initiated on the basis of sugar samples procured from

different refined sugar producing factories.

BUREAU OF SUGAR STANDARDS (BSS) :

This section works under Sugar Technology Division and is responsible for preparation of Indian

Sugar Standards, which are mandatory for all sugar factories in India to measure (Identify) the grade

of their produce and mark them accordingly for sale in the Indian market.

Meeting of the newly formed Committee of Experts for approval of sugar standards for the season

Development of Conductivity Sensor for Assessment of Staleness in Sugar cane:

Department is working for development of conductivity sensor for assessment of staleness in

sugar cane which is of immense importance for the sugar industry. The study has been taken up

to get an idea about cut to crush delay as it affects the recovery of sugar from cane due to

staleness. Preliminary studies were carried out in the institute our laboratory as well as in some

sugar factories in Uttar Pradesh. The study was further continued in two factories, M/s. Sant

Tukaram S.S.K. Ltd., Pune and M/s. Sanjivani (Takli) S.S.K. Ltd. Ahmednagar in the 2014-15

crushing season to assess impact under different agro-climatic conditions. Study of staleness in

cane has been extended to two more varieties of sugar cane available in the Institute farm to find

out any co-relation between conductivity, purity & other parameters.

b. Studies on use of Enzymes for increasing Fermentability of Molasses :

Molasses contains unfermentable sugars to the tune of 5-7% and these cannot be fermented by

yeast cells and hence relatively lower productivity of alcohol is obtained. In this study attempts were

made to convert unfermentable sugars to fermentable sugars by using enzymes available in market

and the work has been completed. Studies indicated that use of such enzymes may result in increase

in alcohol yield by 2-4 liters per ton of molasses. Cost Economics is also being worked out.

EXPERIMENTAL SUGAR FACTORY

In curriculum of various courses of Sugar Technology and Sugar Engineering discipline, there is

provision to provide technical know-how to the students about the working of sugar plant. For this

purpose, the Institute has a 100 TCD Vacuum Sugar Plant, where in-plant training is provided to

students of different courses to acquaint them with the processing of cane juice to produce plantation

white sugar.

During the year, replacement of various worn out equipments was taken-up & thorough repairs of

milling tandem were undertaken. The crushing operation of Experimental Sugar Factory started

from 2nd February 2015 and closed on 13th March 2015. During the season 4136.0 qtls of sugarcane

was crushed. Trials of some new equipments/ processes viz. Short Retention Time Clarifier (SRTC)

and Process for Production of Sulphurless Sugar were also carried out.

PLACEMENT CELLIt is a matter of pride & pleasure to place on record that this year the placement cell activity again

proved its worth. In the recent past the job market in sugar and allied industries was at very low ebb

but eventually the quality prevailed. It was able to achieve nearly 100% placement of our pass outs

students of various discipline. Following organizations were the prime takers of our pass out

students:

• M/s. K.M. Sugar Mills Ltd.,Masauda, Faizabad, U.P.

• M/s. Shreeji Process Engineering Works Ltd., Mumbai, Maharastra

• M/s. Innovation Chemicals, Kanpur, U.P.

• M/s. DSCL Sugar Ltd., U.P.
