Dear Friends,

At Habitat, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and that starts with a stable and healthy place to call home. Through your contributions of time, talent, and resources, we continue to help transform lives and build brighter futures. This year alone, more than 6,300 volunteers and donors provided a hand up to 78 people across the Portland Metro area. Through Habitat, you are building a more dynamic and diverse city for everyone, and investing in mixed-income communities that will now be affordable for generations to come.

With land for 175 homes now under our care, we will break ground on 50 new homes in inner North and Northeast Portland this year—a new record for us. This is toward our strategic goal of tripling the number of people we serve annually by 2022. Securing affordable homeownership in these neighborhoods is crucial to preventing further displacement. And as the housing market continues to prevent families living on low incomes from purchasing or renting homes, the average African American, Native American, and Latino families remain completely priced out. Together, we have the power to turn the tide, one home at a time.

It takes more than nails and beams to build a house, and even more to make a home. It is a collaborative endeavor where every helping hand turns effort into impact.

By lifting up your neighborhoods, you strengthen our city. Thank you for lifting up Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. Together, let’s continue to build a sustainable future.

In partnership,

Steve Messinetti Ian GordonPresident and CEO Board Chair

After fleeing their central African home of Burundi during the civil war in the mid 90s, Prosper and Rosata lived in Tanzania as refugees for 12 years before they were able to immigrate to the U.S. and rebuild a life for their family. Here, in what Rosata calls, “the land of opportunities,” they wanted a fresh start for their children, enough land to farm, and the type of stability only homeownership can provide.

Prosper found work as a machine operator making burlap sacks and Rosata worked as a package food processor at a local plant. They rented a four-bedroom apartment with a community garden, but they were always concerned about the constant threat of neighborhood violence.

Prosper said they were grateful for the rental they had and they liked their community, but he was concerned about his family. He and his wife wished to live somewhere where their children could play safely outside. When they found out Habitat accepted their application for homeownership, they knew all their hard work had paid off. They would finally have a home once again; a safe place for their children to thrive.

Now nestled in at the Helensview community in Northeast Portland, life continues to bloom. Their eldest son, Jophety, graduated from high school and plans to apply to college. They host potlucks with their neighbors with food made from their garden vegetables. What started as a 12x12 plot of land at the community garden has grown to an acre of donated land on Sauvie Island called “Happiness Family Farms,” which they named after their youngest daughter. Now, they’ve partnered with local non-profits to farm Habitat-owned land on Simpson Street, making use of the grounds prior to construction of more Habitat homes. And while it may not be the 10 acres they once had in Burundi, they’ve managed to bring a piece of home to their community here in Portland.

In addition to such staples as tomatoes, greens, and potatoes, Rosata grows organic African produce, like cassava, African eggplant, and mboga buchungu—a leafy green rich in vitamins. Their enterprise has allowed them to cut down on food costs by nearly 20% and the modest profits made at farmers markets has them firmly rooted once again.

“We’re getting back into it now,” Prosper said. “People here trust us and we want to expand our business, secure more land, and connect and grow the community.”

Beyond their success founded in the stability of homeownership, this industrious family has given back to the community in great ways. As a significant mark of generosity, they donated 388 pounds of organic produce to St. Johns to fight homelessness and also, to their previous neighborhood.

Rosata believes her family’s vegetables are essential to a healthy life. By their abundance, a whole community is nourished. They’re currently working to uplift underserved entrepreneurs across Oregon, as well.

“This is our accomplishment,” Prosper said. “It is important for us to be independent now and into the future.” As they seek more land to feed more people, their willingness to give back strengthens their pursuit.

Nourishing Neighbors

Meet Prosper and RosataProsper and Rosata both worked full-time jobs, continued to expand their own farming business while raising their children, and somehow found time to complete hundreds of sweat equity hours building their Habitat home. After receiving keys to their brand new home this past year, their steadfast journey is a statement to the power of perseverance.

By the Numbers

homes built globally

Thanks to you, 78 people experienced strength and stability through Habitat’s affordable homeownership and repair programs.

We build high quality, energy efficient houses that will serve homeowners for years to come.

Home repairs are critical to the prevention of further displacement of low-income homeowners. From roof replacements to replacing windows and doors, we provide a variety of repairs that stabilize homeowners in the Cully neighborhood.

Habitat is able to buy and rehabilitate vacant houses to create affordable, stable homes for qualified low-income families.

With your support, we were able to build 44 homes with our sister affiliates in El Salvador and Ethiopia.

Habitat offers people a hand up, not a hand out. Future homebuyers put in 300 hours of sweat equity. This involves building their home and the homes of their future neighbors. They work alongside volunteers under the supervision of our construction crew. Homebuyers can also contribute sweat equity hours by completing homeowner education classes or working at one of our four ReStore locations. This year, homebuyers collectively put in an equivalent of 312 work days of sweat equity.

Our relationship with homebuyers does not end when we hand them the keys. Sweat equity hours always involve classroom hours and we have a large selection of classes to offer. This year we introduced a post-purchase homeowner education program to support homeowners after their purchase. These classes are aimed at helping homeowners manage their bills, shop smarter, make their own repairs, and include other money-saving tips.

neighborhood revitalizationContinued Partnership and EngagementHabitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization Program engages with residents and community partners in the Cully neighborhood. Habitat is a member of the Living Cully Coalition and supports the efforts of various community groups in the neighborhood, including the Cully Housing Action Team (CHAT), the Cully Mobile Home Program, Our 42nd Avenue, and the Cully Association of Neighbors.

Reducing Barriers to ServiceThis year, Habitat made modifications to its Home Repair and Preservation Program to make the program more accessible to homeowners with smaller scale projects. The program allows homeowners with projects such as yard clean-up, stair and handrail repair, and power-washing to make a one-time sliding scale payment. Simplifying the process for smaller projects has created increased interest in the program from homeowners who previously may have found requirements overly cumbersome. Additionally, it provides more opportunities for volunteers to engage in a meaningful way.

New InitiativesHabitat began a partnership with a local nonprofit, the Coalition for Prosperity for the People (CPP), and a Habitat family to cultivate land at a future Habitat build site in the Cully neighborhood (see page 5 for their story). CPP has engaged a group of apprentices on the site enrolled in their beginner farming training program. A portion of the harvest has provided free community supported agriculture (CSA) shares to Hacienda CDC families. Activity on the future Habitat build site on NE Simpson Street has also brought a previously derelict site into productive use that benefits the surrounding community.

AmeriCorps members serve a variety of vital roles within Habitat. Whether they are engaging communities, building homes, leading volunteers, raising resources, or developing new programs, AmeriCorps members are critical to the work of Habitat affiliates across the country, helping us operate more efficiently and effectively. Thank you to all of our AmeriCorps members who each contributed over 1,700 hours of labor last year:

AmeriCorps

total volunteers hours contributed

This year, we saw 1,811 volunteers help us achieve our goal of building affordable and sustainable homes. While many volunteers help us on our construction sites swinging hammers, painting walls, landscaping, and completing other tasks, many also contribute time in the office. Volunteers put in a total of 22,678 hours this year. That’s the equivalent of having 10 full-time employees!

stores

ReStores take in donated furniture and building supplies and sell them back to the community, raising money for Habitat homes and diverting waste that would otherwise go to landfills. Proceeds support homebuilding by the Evergreen, Portland/Metro East, and Willamette West Habitat affiliates.

ReStore volunteers put in 26,904 hours last year at the Portland and Gresham stores. This is equivalent to having 12 full-time employees.

Our 4 retail locations diverted nearly 7,484 tons of material away from landfills, distributing funds to three area Habitat affiliates to build homes metro-wide.

We have stores in Portland, Washington County, Clark County, and Gresham. This year our stores introduced the Electrolux Scratch and Dent program. Appliances with slight blemishes come with a 1-year warranty.
