President’s Message FY19/20 had been a year of changes for Shan You. We welcomed a few new faces to our staff, including Executive Director Mr Lam Seng Yip. The new faces brought vibrancy to the organization. However, with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, Shan You’s services and activities had to be suspended or modified to comply with new restrictions. Modes of reaching out to our service users, beneficiaries, volunteers, donors and partners also had to change to meet the new norm. We will be forging ahead with digital transformation both in backend support and front-end services to meet the evolving needs of the community. Our core service, counselling and casework, saw a record number of cases with many complex issues ranging from depression and suicide risk to anxiety and trauma. In the past financial year, Shan You Counselling Centre (SYCC) also had the privilege to work with various partners such as Please Stay Movement, Mental Health Film Festival, Singapore Repertory Theatre and Monfort Care to promote mental health awareness and treatment to the community. Shan You’s collaboration with Oxford Mindfulness Centre (OMC) has given Shan You invaluable experience with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). We have expanded our evidence-based mindfulness therapies portfolio to include Mindfulness Self Compassion (MSC), Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Teaching (TIMT) and Mindfulness-Based Mental Wellness (MBMW) workshops. Shan You Professional Training (SYPT) continued to further strengthen our Professional Training on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). To fulfill the objectives of SYPT to provide world-class training, we also engaged world-renowned trainers to teach both traditional and new counselling techniques ranging from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Master Class to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Over at Shan You Wellness Community (SYWC), activities focused on helping our aging population develop a holistic wellness lifestyle. Our broad-ranging activities cater to the physical, mental and social wellness of the elderly. We had also transformed our community garden to a sensory garden named Senses Garden. It was re-opened officially with much fanfare. 2020 is Shan You’s Silver Jubilee. We rejoice over our 25 years of service in the mental health and social care sectors. SYWC will also have served the community for 10 years. Shan You will not be able to serve the community without the unwavering support and generosity of our stakeholders, who believe in us. We express our deep gratitude to all stakeholders and community partners.
Warmest regards
Jenny Quek President

Clinical & Mental Health Services
Counselling Service
For more than a decade, Shan You Counselling Centre (SYCC) has been providing professional yet affordable counselling services to our community. Our clients include youths, adults, seniors, couples, and families presenting with a wide spectrum of mental health and other issues. In recent years, SYCC has specialised in helping clients with mental health issues and conditions to recover and gain psychological and emotional wellness. Our counselling services have helped many clients improve their daily functioning and quality of life and reduce their suicide and self-harm risks. SYCC has seen a steady increase in our counselling cases and sessions over the past 2 years. In FY19/20, we had seen a total of 406 new cases, provided counselling to a total of 508 cases and completed a total of 1,615 counselling sessions.

Total Number of New Cases 298 377 406
Total Number of Cases Counselled 413 486 508
Total Number of Counselling Sessions 1,285 1,566 1,615
Our team of psychologists and counsellors are trained to provide multiple evidence-based counselling approaches, such as Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. In addition, we specialise in providing mindfulness-based interventions for mental health issues. These interventions help clients with their mental health recovery through both formal and informal practices of mindfulness. A substantial body of research has shown that mindfulness-based interventions are effective in reducing psychological and emotional distress, most notably anxiety and depression, and improving well-being and quality of life in persons with mental health conditions. Being community-based, our counselling services are more accessible and less stigmatizing compared with similar services at hospitals and other medical institutions. Our services reduce treatment delay for those living with mental health conditions in the community.
The Elephant in Our Community (EIOC) Aligned with our counselling services, SYCC is embarking on the 3rd year of The Elephant in Our Community public education campaign on mental health in 2020. The campaign was launched on 1st July 2018 and aims to empower individuals and families affected by mental health conditions to seek help and recover well. At the end of 2019, the campaign has engaged a total number of 5,410 participants at numerous community outreach events. All campaign events were free to members of the public.

Live. Now. Well. As part of the Live. Now. Well. initiative, SYCC organised a number of affordable mindfulness-based programmes in 2019 to enhance the mental well-being of members of the community. These experiential programmes helped participants to cultivate mindfulness and empowered them to make choices and take actions based on their personal values. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is an evidence-based programme that integrates mindfulness practices with elements of Cognitive Therapy. The programme helps individuals to focus on what is happening in the here and now with intention and openness to experience. Such awareness allows one to develop the capacity to respond intentionally to situations, rather than reacting automatically. Research has shown that MBCT is associated with improvements in mental and emotional well-being and quality of life. SYCC organised 3 8-week Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy peer group programmes between April and October 2019. These programmes were facilitated by MBCT teachers-in-training. More than 40 participants attended these programmes at our centre.
Mindful Self-Compassion Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an empirically-supported programme that combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion to enhance one’s capacity for emotional well-being. Research has indicated that the MSC programme significantly increases self-compassion, compassion for others, mindfulness and life satisfaction as well as decreases depression, anxiety and stress. SYCC organised a 4-day Mindful Self-Compassion experiential programme in October 2019. A total of 21 local and overseas participants attended the programme at our centre. Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Teaching Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Teaching (TIMT) programme addresses the growing need for teachers of mindfulness, self-compassion and other contemplative practices to be more trauma-informed. The programme skills up teachers so that they can support their participants through the principles of a trauma-aware approach as identified by the US National Center for Trauma-Informed Care. SYCC organised a 3-day Trauma-Informed Mindfulness Teaching programme in February 2020. A total of 17 participants attended the programme at our centre. Mindfulness-Based Mental Wellness SYCC organised a series of Mindfulness-based Mental Wellness programmes in 2019 to help participants improve their emotional and mental well-being and quality of life. These programmes were based on activities like yoga, Tai Chi, movement and art. Research has shown that these activities when combined with mindfulness practices can lead to beneficial outcomes like increased levels of mindfulness, well-being and quality of life as well as improved mental health symptoms. SYCC organised 6 Mindfulness-based Mental Wellness programmes between April and August 2019. A total of 56 participants attended these programmes at our centre.

Professional Training
Shan You had maintained its productive relationship with the Oxford Mindfulness Centre
(OMC) at the University of Oxford in organising and promoting mindfulness-based
cognitive therapy (MBCT) programmes conducted by OMC Associates. These
programmes were then recognised by the OMC and officially prepared the participants
for further extensive training to become OMC Associates themselves.
Similarly, Shan You had continued to organise and promote motivational interviewing
(MI) with only trainers from the peak organisation that represented MI, i.e., the
Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). These officially recognised
training programmes then supported and guided the participants in their training paths
for joining MINT as well.
In addition, Shan You had provided the service of clinical supervision to mental health
professionals at the Anglican Care Centre (Simei) and the SBL Vision Family Service
Centre.
The professional training programmes delivered to both the community and the staff of
specific organisations (i.e., in-house training) were as follows:

Workshop Discussion
Shan You Wellness Community
In line with our motto ‘Together we create a safe space, for mental and physical wellness when
aging gracefully and meaningfully’, a variety of regular programs were delivered on a daily basis
to benefit our clients by addressing basic needs, physical, mental health and spiritual needs. Of
emphasis and with the goal of aligning with our national interest to promote active living,
deliberate effort has been made to include daily activities that encourage movement, healthy
eating and that are meaningfully educational for our elderly folk.
