3. Chapter activities:
• Chapter meetings:
As a Student Chapter we are holding meetings each week in our newly refreshed room provided by
our Department of Metrology and Optoelectronics. On those meetings we discuss our current
projects and present research results (this part is made by Ph.D. students). Each meeting takes from
20 to 40 minutes. As a result of such often meetings we were able to recruit new young members
from first year students at our Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics.
We have managed to create new website for our chapter available at www.soliton-pg.pl which helps
us organise meetings as well as workshops.
• Conferences:
We have attended the OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers 2013 & 8 th International SPIE Student
Chapter Meeting, Toruń. Four members (M. Trojanowski, M. Kraszewski, K. Łuszcz, M. Ficek) of
our chapter have presented their work in form of presentation and posters. Here are some photos of
us at the conferences poster session:

During conference we were able to renew our contacts with other chapters from Poland and begun
further cooperation in our projects.
• Baltic Science Festival:
Every year at Gdańsk University of Technology, which we are part of, is organized a science
festival. Its goal is to show science to young people and encourage them to study at our university.
Our task is to organise events at our department. In this years edition we made two events. First was
a laser obstacle course, where participants had a small piece of foil that helped them to determine
where are laser rays in order to avoid them and get to our grand prize. They had to get to the prize
and grab it without activating alarm. Second event was our yearly classic called optic shooting
range, where we use specially modified BB-gun (equipped with IR laser) and target (CCD matrix)
to conduct a shooting tournament.

• Workshops in basics of optoelectronics for high schools:
Our mission is to increase awareness of optoelectronics as potential career path for high school
students. Development of ones interests in optoelectronics is difficult comparing to many other
disciplines (ex. computer science). We want to show local high school students how to practice
optoelectronics as a hobby. Already we managed to make presentations at 4 high schools and made
first workshop involving basics of electronics. We intend to make four workshops for each group
containing up to 15 participants. We would like to make presentations for around 300 (~200 already
done) participants. Here are photos from one of our presentations held at local high school:

4. Future planned activities:
• Our next year plans include organising next OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers 2014 in
collaboration with other Polish SPIE chapters. We already have started this and intend to
make it official to the end of year 2013.
• We will help with organising next years edition of Baltic Science Festival with upgraded
laser obstacle course and few new events. Of course our optic shooting range will be one of
them.
• Our current projects made by our youngest members will be presented and included in
future projects as well as used in our work (we hope that some of them will be published).
5. Financial information:
• We have used founding from SPIE activity grant to pay for conference in Toruń as well as
printing posters for our chapter. Also we used them to buy necessary elements for projects
made by members.
• Workshops mentioned before are founded mainly from SPIE outreach grant and all epences
are listed in grant application.
• We have used Officer Travel Grant to send Maciej Kraszewski to conference Optics &
Photonics 2013 and Student Chapter Leadership Workshop held in San Diego.
• Next year we plan to use Activity Grant for founding chapter projects as well as for
marketing purposes. Also we would like to send one of our officers to a conference using
Officer Travel Grant and we plan on useing Visiting Lecturer grant.
